The smell is very strong at the moment but as it dries it will dissipate some. I have cedar mantels I cut for my parents home 16 years ago and they still smell great.
Last summer we milled a Eastern Red Cedar beam 6"x12"x24' for a customer. It was a #1 with no wane or hole or incursions. It was a really nice log that was 37" at the big end and at 25' long it was 16".

Thomas sir. I would not use the cedar beams to support any weight only for decoration purposes. If you can next time save the sawdust and put it in bags for sale it is excellent for a Cloths closet. Or or four chest of drawers, trunks etc. Stay safe God bless. 🇨🇦
Beautiful timbers. My first thought was that it was almost (almost) a shame to use clear grain logs like that for timbers, then I saw the knots when you showed the finished timber. Still would have made beautiful boards, but home timbers are a noble use for any wood. Cedar bark is very abrasive and dulls the blade teeth pretty fast ( cedar wood also has a high silica content and is abrasive), with the plugging of the sawdust shoot and wear on the teeth it's worth the time to de-bark even if only the cut line. Not sure why I'm watching you cut logs when I have a log on the mill ready to cut and have spent the last two days milling. By the way, if you think it's hot there, it was 80 here yesterday and forecast to be hotter today. High a couple of days ago was 55-tee shirt weather!
The weather has been crazy. It was 77 degrees and 91% humidity to starts the morning off, then by about noon it was 91 degrees and 85% humidity. The humidity was heavy. This week I'm up in Tennessee playing around my dad's mill and the heat followed me up, 😆.

Your right I have a few more logs on the ground than I like. The logs next to the mill are on the ground because I was cutting them for jobs that weekend. I probably only have about 12 or so logs currently on the ground the rest are all off the ground. It's always a work in progress, when I get a custom job I have to search through the piles to find the right log. Also I have people constantly dropping off logs so off the ground room is limited.

If you have large clean cedar logs that you can cut beams out of, there is definitely a market. My dad is currently cutting a big cedar beam job 8x8's lengths up to 20'. He can't keep cedar beams in stock long.

I sold these at $2.50 a board ft, these were some of the best cedar logs I've cut so I would think I could have sold them closer to $3.50 - $4 in our area.
Howdy sir. I’m in Alabama and I have access to hundreds of eastern red cedar trees anywhere from 2 inches to 28 inches in diameter. I’m wanting to build me a cedar wall in my shed that will be 10’x10’. I’ve sawed all my cedar logs 10’8” long and they are ready to take to my friend who has a portable sawmill. I’m sure he will know, but i watched your video and I’d like your professional opinion on how thick I should have him saw the cedar. If I were building something that required strength I would think maybe 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches would be sufficient, but I’m just going to cover the wall with plywood and use a brad nailer to nail my cedar boards to the plywood. Pretty much like lining a closet. What thickness would you recommend since cedar doesn’t shrink as much as other trees? I’m thinking since the cedar boards will be laying flat on the plywood I could get away with maybe sawing them 5/8-7/8 then plane them. Just trying to make the logs go as far as I can, but I don’t want to saw em to thin, plane em and they crack or split. Sorry for the long reply, but I really enjoyed your video and any suggestions, tips or advice would surely be much appreciated. Thank you sir.
First off thanks for watching the channel, what type of mill does your buddy have? If it has a computer and does really accurate cuts I would do 5/8". If he's just using a scale and doesn't have a computer I would say 1/2" to keep it easy for him and to get the boards as consistent as possible. Consistency is key if you plan to plane the boards. Also without a computer 1/2" is way easier to keep track of in your head. One pass through the planer is all you should need. Then as you stated use a brad nailer to put up on your wall with tge sheathing. I would not go over 6" wide on the boards and really you could mix it up just use some of the smaller logs and go max width of cut once squared. That's what I do a lot of times if in covering a wall. The boards could vary between as much as 1.5" but it doesn't stand out too much and I like the look, it also helps to maximize your yield. By keeping your width at 6" or less and your thickness around 1/2" to 5/8" you can still bend a board around if it's not exactly straight on the edges. Now I am not a professional by any means but I have made enough mistakes to have learned from them, 🤣. Thanks again and good luck on your project.

@@TCSawmills I’ve hit the cedar jackpot. I have a friend that has dozens of eastern red cedar trees and some are over 30 inches in diameter. I just don’t know how I’ll load them on my trailer and get them home without using somebody’s tractor that has bucket on the front to lift em. I’ve been power cleaning the 10-20 inch ones up to my chest and loading them on my trailer, but these I might have to cut me two pieces of hickory and roll em up on my trailer using chains like they did with mules back in the day. I’ve done it before logging with my dad. I wish I could leave you a picture of the 3 logs I sawed and pulled out today. 💪🏻
Yes use the terrain to your advantage if you can. Back up trailer to a hill and use gravity to assist, or as you stated use boards to make a ramp and loop the chain around the log so when you pull the other end it rolls the log up onto the trailer. A vehicle, atv or winch helps to do the pulling. Good luck and congrats on the score.
It was for a customer, adding it to a house that is already built. It won't be carrying any load other than itself and the braces that they are adding.
Gotcha, it could be used for support, eastern red cedar is good in compression, but it's not that great in bending due to it being brittle than other species. However, with proper sizing and supports it definitely can be used in spans.

The colour on the cedar beam is beautiful. One certainly doesn't see that everyday. I am sure it smells great.

Thanks, yes they are but now they are trying to figure out a way to hang them 12' in the air....a 19' 8"x10" is pretty heavy.

Did that beam go to a kiln after or did they just use it as is?
It went straight to the customer to be used.
Is there a way to retain that deep red color? I’ve found, that as cedar dries, it just goes to a dull grey.
Keep it out of direct sunlight. It will turn to an orange/red color over time. You can also add mineral oil to keep the colors more vibrant.

I've never bought cedar, most of the time people want it removed or they have fallen down after a storm.
