This boss fight has some of the best animation I’ve ever seen. You can tell so much love and care went into making this DLC, particularly so with Chef Saltbaker
You can see how well animated this final boss is, it's very smooth and very fluid. Like everyone said, this look like it's straight out from a some old Disney movie. The song of the boss and the detail of each thing that's going around in the back and your fight are grand. I'm one of many who are glad that they took their lovely time with this DLC. Props to the animator and everyone in the development team for theri hard work.
I just love how menacing they made the chef look in this fight, they turn his positive and happy smile into a threatening grin so seamlessly, and with the cracks he looks even more scary
He actually felt more threatening than the Devil to me. Sure, the Devil takes souls, but we never actually see him commit murder on screen lime Saltbaker did with the limes. Also, that psychotic stare and smile of his is more menacing than any other villain in the game.
What also adds to it is how jarring the reveal can be for those who don't see it coming. What the Devil does, people expect from him and other characters who are similar to him. They don't expect the helpful, well-kown, and ambitious chef to be a sadistic, psychopathic killer.

Most of the chess bosses are linked to beheading (parrying the Pawns' heads, Bishop's flying head and I think Rook is pretty obvious), Esther Winchester gets turned into sausages and finally, Saltbaker totally maims the sentient ingredients. It's freaking amazing.

Honestly my favorite boss ever. When I open the dlc the ice wizard changing into a golem caught my eye and he became my favorite. But now that I played a little through salt he is awesome. His animations are beautiful, each fight stage is completely unique in design and fighting. He isn’t an entire pain in the ass to the point of me wanting to break my controller either which is nice
On the switch version of the fight, on the day of release, I experienced very glitchy stuff, when Saltbaker starts the fight, it flashes a white light and stays for a second, even after the fight begins, leaving me vulnerable to sugar cubes or lime wedges. At the third and final phase, there are just white spaces where the character mode should be, and I had no idea Saltbaker’s heart was parry pink, it was just a hot mess and needs patching
similar glitches have also happened on the devil since the port launched. both also suffer long load times, and after exiting to the map from the saltbaker fight, sometimes the game won’t get off the loading screen ever
@@amso7169 I didn't experience any long load time at any point in the game, I don't know anything about the Saltbaker load time, I never went to the map during his fights.
What I've noticed is that while a lot of character animations in Cuphead emulate Fleischer shorts (which is still absolutely amazing btw), Saltbaker's animations feel more theatrical, like something Disney would make in the 40s. I can't stop watching it, it's breathtaking and now I fully understand why the DLC needed this time to polish its visuals to perfection.
The music in this fight tells a story! 1. You’re faced with a foe that murders innocent ingredients. His evil grin shows how insane he’s gone in search for power! 2. The second phase, he’s slowly cracking both psychically and mentally. He’s got you in the palm of his hand, laughing maniacally. You’re in some serious shit now. 3. Phase 3, his bakery is destroyed, his body is destroyed, but his insides are still out to kill you. Phase 4 a hole opens signifying that this is the last stand, you lose and it’s over. His very heart and soul are out to get you due his pride being too great! The music has changed to a sense of hope and courage. You have the fate of the world in your hands, it’s up to you to make it a good one. When you beat him, the fanfare signifies you conquering the ultimate foe. It’s over. You’ve finished Cuphead. The final chapter concludes as the future of Studio MDHR looks bright, and your excitement awaits for what they will do in the future. Thank you. 🙏
I can’t even comprehend what I’m looking at for most of this fight, there is so much happening all over the screen. Never understood how people play this game but major props lol
As someone who as beaten all bosses in Expert, I can say that even just beating this guy on Expert, let alone beating him with NO DAMAGE, is ludicrous. It took me nearly 2 hours to just beat him in Expert, so I imagine beating him with no damage is almost impossible. Kudos to you.
The fact that he sometimes stares at the screen at the first phase…. God reminded me of some cooking shows, but the fact that this is a GAME drawn in a CARTOONISH STYLE, and the fact that he’s staring at the screen in the horrifying manner to my soul is what that made this boss fight the most haunting…
How many times will I watch the Chef Saltbaker fight (solely for the fact that it is, IMO, the best animation in the DLC) before I get sick of it? I'm willing to watch it as many times as it takes to find out. Like, seriously. WOW.
i hate when RUclips recommends a video for a game I'm mildly interested in and will get to at some point and it says "this character is the final boss"
Very nice detail that Saltbaker can swipe either sugar cubes or limes off the cutting board in his intro and thats the attack that starts first before he has the chance to send anything else.
gotta say how much more intimidating saltbaker is than the devil himself. like at least the devil had a job to do, but saltbaker is just openly murdering sentient beings and turning them into killer foodstuffs, all the while sporting that horrifying grimace
I noticed something, when saltbaker grows giant he forms cracks on him but when he slammed the table he showed no sign of cracks meaning that when he bursed though the roof it gave him damage
One thing I wish was implemented into the game was Saltbaker’s final heart phase to be a parry-a-thon. You could only damage him by parrying. This would be a nice callback to the king’s challenges.
The animation in this is genuinely amazing, I feel like I’m watching an old Disney movie.

To be fair, it’s not exactly parry pink anywhere
But that sounds pretty broken.
@@Pancakes_Master it’s not unbeatable, it’s just missing the models entirely and the hit box is confusing
similar glitches have also happened on the devil since the port launched. both also suffer long load times, and after exiting to the map from the saltbaker fight, sometimes the game won’t get off the loading screen ever
@@amso7169 I didn't experience any long load time at any point in the game, I don't know anything about the Saltbaker load time, I never went to the map during his fights.
My switch version rarely glitched out, thats kinda odd
What I've noticed is that while a lot of character animations in Cuphead emulate Fleischer shorts (which is still absolutely amazing btw), Saltbaker's animations feel more theatrical, like something Disney would make in the 40s. I can't stop watching it, it's breathtaking and now I fully understand why the DLC needed this time to polish its visuals to perfection.
The Great definition of" WTF IS HAPPING ON MY SCREEN"
Man looks like the villain from Pinocchio in the 1st 2 phases
Coachman: They never come back… as… BOYS!!!!
@@TheBranMan100 you are right if you survive you come back as a man
They held *NOTHING* back in the animation department here!
1:56 You almost literally take a break to... dance.
Thank you. 🙏
I didn't notice this the first time but he literally used a mario mushroom to grow giant
Lol
Can you parry the mushroom?
@@fiery114 no I think it’s too high
@@ellisp276 heh 😐
Makes sense Mario and cup head were both in super smash bros
I died countless times just watching him in the background. The animation is superb
This plot twist was bigger than the endgame
Yeah exactly
It wasn’t? People predicted 4 years ago he’d be the villain. He literally has poison behind him in the original trailer
@@tuf_dev also the image from the book
@@tuf_dev I knew he was going to be evil, but I wasn't expecting him to be this scary and psychotic. That's what got me, personally.
Anyone who's played a Kirby game knew this twist was coming from minute one.
I can’t even comprehend what I’m looking at for most of this fight, there is so much happening all over the screen. Never understood how people play this game but major props lol
This is the scariest cuphead boss ever
i feel bad for the sugar cubes they die so brutaly
Nah the lemons died more brutally
@The Krookodile Hunter never
They really went all out with the animation on him, and that is something I truly appreciate!
I feel bad for the people that didn't use the genies wish for the 9HP here because it's by far the hardest Cuphead boss with everything going on
How many times can you use it?
Genie wish only work in regular or simple
@@aydenrozzelle7691 three times if you havent beaten the devil, but when you beat the devil you can use it how ever as many times as you want
@@kris_something thank you, but just to be clear your talking about regular devil not dream devil right?
@@aydenrozzelle7691 yes, I am talking about the devil in inkwell hell.
01:15 Nice of Chef Saltbaker to use that annoying Wood Man falling leaves technique
I hope he made lots of spaghetti
The Devil: I am the most terrifying bosses in this game!
Chef Saltbaker: Hold my knife.
Chef salt bakers animation is flawless I can’t get enough of it😁👍🏾
Dang now I want chef salt baker to be in the cup head show. He’s such a cool character and I’d love to see his pure chaos in cinematic and show form.
I love how the true final boss of cuphead, a game known for being notoriously difficult, *is a man made of salt*
How many times will I watch the Chef Saltbaker fight (solely for the fact that it is, IMO, the best animation in the DLC) before I get sick of it?
I'm willing to watch it as many times as it takes to find out. Like, seriously. WOW.
Same! It's all incredible, but my favorite parts are the second phase, and the salt pillars in the last phase.
I feel so bad for the sugar cube 0:29
IKR 😭
He Looked so innocent!
@@Timtasker that's so true
I also feel very bad about the sugar cube 😢😢😢
Dude, I was so happy when I defeated him, the phase 1 was a nightmare
God I'm happy that games like these exist. Too hard for me but thankfully there's videos like these to enjoy the art
That moment when you're too mesmerized by the animation to dodge
i hate when RUclips recommends a video for a game I'm mildly interested in and will get to at some point and it says "this character is the final boss"
2:39 Perfect timing right there
Damn this is such a good dlc, hope to see big RUclipsrs like jacksepticeye and markipiler play it or something.
Yeah me too their in for a surprise
THIS WAS BEYOND ANXIETY INDUCING
You truly don’t know the pain of this fight until you play it on expert
Took me 2 days to finally beat it ...
That 2nd stage tho: "They never come back... AS BOYS!"
Very nice detail that Saltbaker can swipe either sugar cubes or limes off the cutting board in his intro and thats the attack that starts first before he has the chance to send anything else.
Yes, I know how amazing and sinister and just good in general CSB is, but can we just talk about how FREAKING SMOOTH the animations are??!!
This looks insanely hard. Good work on getting an S-rank, and defeated the boss on expert!
The funny part about phase 1 is that he telographs his attacks a week in advance and you still get hit by it. 💀
The fact this music is called *Baking The Wondertart sure is terrifying.*
Cuphead: We Have Come For Your Destruction
Saltbaker: GET THE #### OUT OF MY BAKERY
Me: *watches this*
"Oh its not gonna be that hard"
*Tries and gets nailed by a sugar cube within the first two seconds*
If chaos was a phrase, it would be "Chef Saltbaker Expert"
This is like some Richard Williams quality right there. Damn.
gotta say how much more intimidating saltbaker is than the devil himself. like at least the devil had a job to do, but saltbaker is just openly murdering sentient beings and turning them into killer foodstuffs, all the while sporting that horrifying grimace
Chef Saltbaker, despite being a piece of work on Expert, is the best boss in the game.
Calling this guy harder than the devil is subjective. People may find the devil harder
Yah the Devil was harder and a better bods overall.
We not going to mention how amazing the sync with the final fanfare of baking the wonder tart with the Xbox achievement sound matches so damn well?
His laugh at the start of the second phase lmao 0:58
i died so many times to the first phase to this boss, just look at those gorgeous animations, its eye candy.
I noticed something, when saltbaker grows giant he forms cracks on him but when he slammed the table he showed no sign of cracks meaning that when he bursed though the roof it gave him damage
@02:41 - rare achievement unlocked, respect 👏🏻
Absolutely wonderful animations...
People: he’s using chaser as a crutch
*He using chaser for its intended use
Also it f***ing works* -GigaChad who touches grass
Phase 1 0:00
Phase 2 0:53
Mini Phase 1:57
Phase 4/ finale 2:14
2:34 KNOCKOUT
One thing I wish was implemented into the game was Saltbaker’s final heart phase to be a parry-a-thon. You could only damage him by parrying. This would be a nice callback to the king’s challenges.
Imagine if that huge salt monster at the end of the second phase was actually what his final phase was instead of what we got
I never though a 1930’s cartoon could be so epic yet here we are 90+ years later.
It’s sad seeing live food getting ready to die by this mad murderer.
God the animation is so GGOOOODODOODOD
