This is a salient truth about folk songs and what I would term vernacular lyricism. The writing of songs by ordinary people about events that have happened and continue to happen to the powerless and educationally unconnected people of Ireland and all over the world. What is powerful about such songs is that it enables ordinary people to search out topics in their history and educate themselves regarding dirty secrets that the establishment would like to hide from the ordinary people.
Wolfe tones sing and rejoice in murder of all , they are basically happy to see murder carried out to keep them singing and paying their bills , while many people are fucked up for life through sneaky murders by Marxist extremists .

I know a lot of good interviewers, I am a Historian myself and interviewing is a key part of that, I have never seen someone make baseless claims with zero facts at a group of people and then talk over them when they try to respond. Believe it or not when you show that you have no intention of listening to someone, you get justly verbally harassed, and that’s exactly what happened here. That fuckin guy poked the bear and cried havoc when it attacked him.

I run a Trad.Group on F.B. and one of the entry questions is .....who are your favourite group? I'm not joking from all parts of the world people choose the Wolfe Tones among the three of four top artists that are picked. Like them or hate them they are one of the most popular ever to come out of Ireland and are known and followed throughout the world. I remember when they started out around 1964/65 (I think).

Pat Kenny. An ex RTE newcaster and political commentator not known for his sympathetic views on Republicanism of the NI struggle. The tragedy in Ireland is that the people on the frontline of the sectarian divide suffer the most and know the real truth of the NI troubles. People living 90 miles or more away from it do not realise the enormity of what has been done to the nationalist community in NI for the past 100 years.
I'm very impressed at The Wolfetones for standing their ground against some terribly misinforming journalists on the stage and the one in the crowd. People will believe journalists are speaking with some knowledge on a subject but those then really are one sided and ignorant. I know the history better than them and I'm in the south west of England and unfortunately The 'Tones won't ever becoming to my town-i can virtually guarantee that. Shame.
Not sure why this conversation happened. They are musicians. I think the group should have come to sing and not got caught in this potatoe fight. If the host and his accomplices pursued as they did, they should have stood up and walked off. It would have made front page news.
Fintan should join the band and become the 4th Tone. Fintan could play bass, standing there in his suit and glasses, pumping out the bass lines behind Brian, Tommy and Noel.
The Irish should be proud of their courageous resistance to foreign rule. This is the mentality that has allowed Ireland to be overwhelmed by migrants. Unfortunately, the future of Ireland will not be Irish, and the heroes of Irish history will have suffered in vain.
I’ve had a few pints with the Wolfe Tones before the show. Great, humble men. Miss seeing them tour every year, but that is life. We get older, we do less, and the English still suck.
If a group made a living from singing songs about the Dublin and Monaghan bombings , The Shankill Butchers , McGurks bar , Greysteel etc and were then invited on to primetime television , I wonder what the reaction would be .
continues...there was huge anger in Ireland over the killing of the 2 kids in Warrington in 1993. A massive demonstration in Dublin took place against the IRA and the Irish President atttended the children's funerals. The IRA started their first ceasefire within a year. The Farc business in Columbia in the late-1990s caused Sinn Fein/IRA huge problems in America, and 9/11 in 2001 changed many attitudes towards terrorism there - now that New York knew what it felt like to be on the receiving end.
Just because somebody in the crowd at a Wolfe Tone concert had a go at O'Doherty isn't the fault of the band. Total character assassination of the Wolfe Tones by RTE.
He from a knacker bubble wat he sat about the Miami killings ?? He writes for Paul Williams papers pure tits n arse ,wat about the heroine sold in his street go to bed and slim down your ego cas in Belfast no one ever heard of you
As many Wolfe Tone fans are not fools or drunken. This base tactic is known as gaslighting and is a favoured tactic used by establishment stooges and selectively educated people throughout the ages. If the band was not effective in spreading the word about the fractious and devious nature of Anglo- Irish relations the establishment would treat them with complete indifference. The fact that some of Irelands top journalists treat the band with indgnant hatred, anger and hate shows us how effective their work actually is.
most journalists do give a one sided view they only mention the IRA the UVF and UDA barely get a mention however this doesnt make what the IRA did right
fintan says he wrote about the UVF and the UDA this is probably true however when the troubles are talked about in general the IRA are mentiond the most
O'Toole acts like RTE and the Irish Republic ended the tyranny it endured for centuries peacefully, it didn't the IRA ended it. In most countries he'd be called a traitor.
Oh my god fintan o'toole needs a slap! Why are some people so ashamed of their history? The Wolfe tones are a great band and should be applauded! What annoys me is that they go on about how the IRA killed this many people but yet there's no mention of the UVA, UVF, british army - they've done just as much damage!!
I disagree with what you say. Sinn Fein/IRA never got what they set out to get - a united Ireland. Irish America told the IRA to disarm in 2005 following the Robert McCartney murder and the Northern Bank robbery. Ted Kennedy, the daddy of Irish America, famously said after meeting the McCartney sisters: "no political party can have an armed unit" (yes, Sinn Fein and the IRA are one organisation, for those who didn't know).
wat bout the likes of all these bands that have ppl high on drugs etc... a person can get beat up for just lookin at someone the wrong way. its not the music or wolfe tones that makes ppl violent. some ppl just have to make something out of nothing cos it makes them feel important and gets them publicity and myt be a good topic for a debate. the tones will take them on anyday!
God that Fintan O'Toole lad has serious problems. He was caught out blatantly lying - 'get the tape out and I'll prove I didn't say that' - and he was let off lightly. Having to lie to back up your argument is desperation time and a damning indictment of his integrity as an 'honest' journalist. I'm not surprised though, he was caught out and widely condemned earlier this year for plagiarising another authors work.

@babybobs6 - O'toole is not ashamed of all Irish history, but he is ashamed of the Brutal Murders that took place up North not too long ago, as anyone in their right mind would be. Though of course you are very correct to point out that the UVA and UVF did as much. The British Army, in the earlier Years, did some brutal stuff alright. Bloody Sunday should NEVER have happened, just as much as Bloody Friday should never have happened.
@TheIraRock - are you talking about Ian O'Doherty? He's not a Brit Arselicker at all. Sure he can be a bit of a Prat, but he just offers another opinion. He's only partially correct about the Wolfe tones Audience though, he generalised a bit too much. If he tried and put across a direct point to 2 drunk guys, given his straight-forward 'devil-may-care' attitude, then its not too surprising he got a knocking. I like him though, cos he's not afraid to point his views, arrogant as though he may be.
To quote Liam Clancy , history is written by the conquerors of a country , folk songs are sung by the downtrodden and usually tell the truth .
This is a salient truth about folk songs and what I would term vernacular lyricism. The writing of songs by ordinary people about events that have happened and continue to happen to the powerless and educationally unconnected people of Ireland and all over the world.

Loved the bit when O'Toole was called a "know-all". There was a time when people were modest about their book-learning.
a pathetic bully tactic
The average Irish person loves the traditional music of the Wolfe Tones, and also their political viewpoint by the way.
I know a lot of good interviewers, I am a Historian myself and interviewing is a key part of that, I have never seen someone make baseless claims with zero facts at a group of people and then talk over them when they try to respond.
