Only problem is, the landscape is changing and good workers are rising up the food chain WITH vocal fry, upspeak OR WORSE, BOTH! Worse than it affecting your image is the fact that the actual perceived image on vocal fry and upspeak, is now changing. Sad times we live in. Lol

Yes, it´s also about being concious, hearing each word of your own voice and making it sound good.

I had no idea this type of speech had a name! I've heard it more and more often from women in commercials on TV, and I can't stand the sound of it. It grates on my nerves. LOL. I'm trying to remember, but one commercial is a female dentist talking about some toothpaste, and I will mute the commercial when it comes on. There is an actress who sounds that way in at least the first "Twilight" movie, Anna Kendrick. A really good actress, but I swear it's almost like nails scraping on a blackboard.

I’m middle aged and have spoken this way my whole life. People always ask me if I just woke up. I never heard of vocal fry until today, and I have no idea what you mean by speaking ‘on the breath.’

Thanks for the comment. Speaking on the breath means exhaling while speaking instead of holding in your breath.

I have it and I hate it. It seems worst on the long e, as in _feel_, and also when I dip into lower pitches. I try to avoid it my keeping my voice higher pitch with a bright sound. Wish there were a method to avoid fry without sounding like a cartoon.

Wanting to add to the conversation: sometimes people of "vocal frye" because it comes with the disease he/she is battling. That's me. I'm going to a university's voice center to hopefully learn how to deal w/ it. Just breathing from my belly button doesn't seem to help. Or I'm doing it wrong.

Even in the Netherlands you can hear the vocal fry among teenagers.

The easiest way to avoid it is not put it on in the first p[lace

Is it natural because I tried this and didn't work. The fry happens when I speak or sing the "O" vowel.

Big pet peeve of mine. It is ore noticeable in female presenters and makes them sound so much more disinterested or bored.

    Vocal Fry : Lazy speaking

  • @emiliojavier1850

Vocal Fry makes people sound lazy or high on some other drugs as a junkie except for pot, which usually results in a deep, baritone voice without the annoying vibration.

I wish women would stop this terrible speaking voice trend. They like speaking like that. Even though this person knows how to use her voice properly, most young women don’t want to.

Actually, men use vocal fry as well! I recommend both men and women use deep breathing to avoid it.

For me it's an instant turn off. I automatically assume there's something wrong with a person (90% women), and I'll do my best to stay as far away from her as possible.
