Tbh, as a Non-muslim... I've grown scared to talking with some of my Muslim colleagues nowadays. Speak anything about religion, Bumiputera rights, heck even the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, and you will get either judged, bashed, or even reported to jail by these extremist "idiots". I thought East Malaysian will have less racism, but unfortunately due to heavy influence from West Malaysia and penetration of conservative religious ideologies, we are seeing the downfall of Malaysia in just a few years.

In the 60s,70s & 80s, while we(me, my siblings and neighbours children) were growing up in the estates, we observed Indians,Chinese and Malays all drinking stoup or tiger in the estate coffeeshops. After a hard day's work they would have a beer before heading home.
We took home prepared food to school and almost always ate from each other's plates. There was no halal or haram issue.

I'm just telling you the truth.
      It is in history.
To be honest, in history, Dato onn bin jaafar, created umno. Umno, fought Malayan Union. The mighty British empire, loss to umno. Dato onn bin jaafar, wanted to open the door of umno to all malaysian, but malays didn't agree. In the end Dato onn resigned as president of umno. He later formed a new party. Parti negara for all malaysian. He only won 1 seat. He was disappointed and passed away later. Tunku Abdul rahman, took over from Dato onn bin jaafar, and took over umno. When he was old at 80+, he also wanted a united Malaysia, but the then prime minister, mahathir said tunku was old and sick. You have to understand, that if we are not united, we become weak.
      For example
After independence, 1 ringgit = 1.10 dollar singapore
      Now, 4 ringgit = 1.0 dollar Singapore.
What happened? Did the Chinese or Indian Malaysian governed, Malaysia? No. What happened?
Singapore don't even have enough fresh water. Not enough land. No resources, no oil, no gold, no rubber, no kelapa sawit, everything buy from other countries. They have by now more than 80+ mosque. I received my hidayah in Singapore.
Malaysia was governed by malays. That's the truth. All these years, the government had taken money to enrich themselves. Malaysia is a blessed land, unlike Indonesia, which has to built and rebuild and rebuild due to natural disasters like earthquake, volcano, and tsunami.
Therefore, it is not cina, India, nor bengali, or other races which caused this backward of this beautiful country. We only work harder. What we don't have, we work for it. It is not easy, but it can be done.
Singapore, on the other hand, treats everyone equal. Malay Chinese, Indian etc, all equal. Everyone work hard, to build the nation.
I don't mind, malays have special rights. That is the way of the world. In fact, I support this. I support keistimewaan orang melayu, but as you can see, malays are still poor today. That is a fact. Why??

Definitely a stark contrast from 66 years ago. Malaysians are more united then. Thanks to the secular education they went through emphasising nationlism and racial harmony. In today's Malaysia, Islamization has has elbowed out the secular outlook of the Nation by choice, side-lining the other races. Thus, the cohesiveness amongst the races had faded. Nowadays the Ulamaks are a powerful lot in Malaysian politics. Any social policy changes the Ulamaks have to be consulted first for their approval.

When race and religion is used, the unity of the country is gone. This playcard will just make the country not able to develop in full potential. Too bad we have corrupted politicians that just think of their personal benefits instead of the whole nation benefit. Besides that there are ppl that are getting extremist in this matter. Change is needed fast before it is too late.

Mahathir attempted to make Bahasa Malaysia an international language but UNESCO revealed in their findings that Bahasa Malaysia made up largely Tamil, followed by Hindi, European Latin, Indonesian, Arabic, English, Hebrew and host of many languages therefore it failed to meet the required standard then the 70% minimum of one dominant language to qualify for the International Language Standard. Here it was almost 45% Tamil how on earth was Mahathir going to get the 70%?
Next in 2004 When Badawi was the sitting PM, the religious affairs department under his watch attempted to tie up Malay race to the root of Arab origin but the Al-Afsar University which was entrusted revealed the absence of Caucasoid blood in Malay race further they revealed Malays are a mixture of the Dominant Mongoloid & Negroid blood groups.
Today they Arabicize themselves bagaikan Kacang Lupa Kulit..

i started my career in government and finished during mahathir's rule. i don't recall him wanting to make b.malaysia as an international language. if anything his program to institute English in schools for math & science were shortlived after his time when it was all reverted back to BM. Could you be confusing Ismail Sabri's move to internatialize BM instead?

I'm turning 60 now, and to be honest, I haven't seen any 100% improvement in the unity of our country. After Tengku Abdul Rahman, Malay leaders, along with leaders from other races, concentrated on developing the Malay economy from RMK1. In the 80s, there was a rapid increase in the Malay economy. During Mahathir's leadership, he worked on fostering unity while emphasizing good Islamic values. Unfortunately, "extremist Islamic groups" started to emerge and gradually integrated into the system without anyone realizing it.
I still remember in the 70s to 80s (i was in secondary), there were Islamic extremists on the East Coast trying to establish their influence by boycotting non-Islamic products. The government at that time cracked down on these groups, leading to a period of peace. However, the extreme ideas reappeared with different approach promoting their ideology whereas today the current generation emerged suddenly, posing with a different insight. The Non-Malays are being labeled as immigrants, which is disheartening. Does the 'Perlembagaan' was able to strengthen the unity? What is the government's vision 100 years from now?
The people are united, but not overall yet.

Mariam, you are doing a great job but sadly UNITY is the last thing on the minds of leaders. We thought DSAI may be different as promised by his "reformasi" movement and the BERSIH rallies that even I attended - look what came out of it. We have a leader almost as bad as the racist Mahathir.
AS my good friend , an Imam from a kampung somewhere in Negri said ( his own words ) " it is very difficult to change the Malay mindset ". As a non-Malay, I stayed with him and his family ( long story ) for a year and his children loved me and were very close to me. He instilled good values in them. Now after 15 years they are so excited when I say I may go to the kampung. Most are married with children but are still close to me and accepted me as a family member.
How many Malay families are like his? I was the only non-Malay in that kampung. They included me in every event they held ...they insisted on me being present when several people were talking about things at a engagement discussion for his niece. That was just one event. It was just like my house ...I could do whatever I wanted.
My used clothes were washed and hung up to dry. That really surprised me at first then I got used to it. They never wanted anything in return. Certainly no intention of converting me.
If one family of Muslims ( the father being an Imam ) can genuinely accept and be so loving to me - why can't others throw away their prejudices and get along with all races ??
I will surely visit them again soon. They will always insist on me staying there longer than I planned to. I love the family.
