  • For Father's Day, My Dad and I traveled down to Dover, Delaware. The Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover AFB was having "Open-Aircraft" day, so most of the aircraft, you could go inside! Anyway, I saw this beast pull out of the flight-line, and raced to see my favorite bird takeoff! Sadly, this didn't have the classic TF-39 engines, but I love the Super Galaxy! Enjoy! Sorry for the shakes!

      When I was in college these things would fly over my dorm when coming in to land at the nearby base, and the only way I can describe it is that it looks like a building just hanging in the air. They're so big that when they're flying slowly it almost seems like they aren't moving. Even though I understand the principles of physics that allow planes to fly, whenever I see something like that in person I feel like I almost have to force my brain to accept that something that large is actually in the air.

    The big advantage the C-5M has with the higher thrust engines, the TF-39 have 44,000 lbs of thrust and that compressor howl, while the CF6-80C2 has 50,580 lbs of thrust and meets the Stage 4 noise and emission regulations. I remember when Canada had the old Boeing 707-320C aircraft with the Jtd3- engines when they took off they'd set off car alarms and when they took off from airports like Winnipeg and Vancouver they were find $ 10,000 CDN for being too loud. So that was the problem with the old C5s with the TF-39 engines and their howl, too much noise.

    • @iarissei
      @iarissei 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, but that howl from the old tf-39's is the most unique sound of any turbo fan, akin to the engines of the a-10 (though they got re- engined, too, I think?)

    The C-5M Super Galaxy is most definitely my favorite airplane ever made, and even if the older engines have a unique sound to C-5s. I prefer the newer engines on the C-5M being much more powerful, and they sound cleaner. Also the C-17 is my second favorite plane, which Dover AFB houses both of them.🇺🇲🩶

    • @UNITED38Heavy
      @UNITED38Heavy  2 месяца назад +1

      Couldn’t agree more! The C-5 is my personal favorite aircraft, Stewart (KSWF) used to be home to 13 C-5’s. I sure miss the screaming TF-39 engines, but it’s nice to see the Galaxy modernized up to current standards. The C-17 is insane too, an aircraft of that size being so maneuverable is no easy feat. They don’t build them like they used to!

  • @TheFokker03
    @TheFokker03 2 года назад

    you should try standing near a landing C-5! i've done it a few times at RAF/USAFE Lakenheath in the UK.Although Mildenhall normally handles them,runway repairs caused them to be diverted to Lakenheath. F15's landing are also fairly loud!

      I have watched the C-5 A & B models taking off into 30 to 50 knot headwinds at Ramstein AB where the literally looked like they were levitating at about 500 feet altitude, being held aloft by those massive, screaming engines and those enormous leading and following edge flaps. As amazing as it was to watch and listen to the F-4E's screaming off the base ans later the F-16's nothing compares to watching and listening to this BEAST taking off and landing. Growing up as an Air Force brat I was in and out of those birds dozens of times at airshows, even getting to climb up to the flight deck before security was forced to tighten up. It wasn't until I was in the Marine Corps taking 3 weeks leave after finishing my MOS training and flying back to Ramstein to visit family and friends that I was able to fly in one from Dover AFB to Rota NAS in Spain. So weird sitting in the troop deck, facing the tail instead of the nose.
