  • We were truly surprised by all that Natchitoches had to offer. So much so, that we will have to make a special trip back for more filming! A special SHOUT OUT goes to our sponsor for the trip: LEGACY CAFE! Legacy Cafe is a must-do if you're in the area though. It's best for breakfast and be sure to tell them LOUISIANA DREAD sent you!
    Host: Kyle Crosby

    Transcript:
The oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase is none other than Natchitoches, Louisiana. Founded by a French Canadian, Louis Antoine Juchereau de St. Denis, in 1714 while he was traveling from Mobile, Alabama to Mexico on a trade mission. When he reached the village of the Natchitoches Natives on the Red River, he had two huts constructed within the village and left a few troops there to guard the stores and trade with the inhabitants. Thus, the first settlement was established!
Economically, Natchitoches evolved into a primary French trade center in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Native American tribes of the three Caddo Confederacies played a vital role in establishing trade and communication links. The trade that developed with the Caddos forever changed the material culture of the tribes, and by the mid-18th century they were almost completely dependent upon French trade goods.
Once Louisiana became part of the US, Americans began flooding in and buying land to develop plantations. Cotton was the main crop farmed by African slaves for both Creole and American plantation owners with the Red River being the main hub for commercial activity. In the 1840s, the Red River shifted its course and cut off Natchitoches from the Mississippi River and thus ending the commercial connection for a time. A 33-mile oxbow lake was left in the river's previous location which became known as Cane River Lake. Natchitoches was the site of several noteworthy events during the Civil War with the activation of the Red River Campaign.
In the mid 1900s, there was a decline in the agricultural population with many rural dwellers moving to the large cities. Natchitoches' population took a big population hit and businesses started to board up.
Then-mayor Bobby DeBlieux, came up with an idea to turn the city around. He invested heavily in tourism based on the historic sites in and around Natchitoches. DeBlieux developed the historic downtown district centered on Front Street, developed a national park in the working areas of Magnolia and Oakland Plantations, and had 32 bed-and-breakfasts established to accommodate tourists. That was the most b&bs in the state and has since grown to total 50!
Stop by the oldest general store in the state at Kaffie-Frederick and get yourself a famous Natchitoches meat pie. There is plenty to see here that is both historical, and paranormal. See more by following us at Louisiana Dread.
