  • The 1958 Pacific Typhoon season was a below average season within the Western Pacific ocean, however, many of the storms that formed within the season became powerful Typhoons, and many of those going on to become even more powerful Super Typhoons.

      Ophelia at most was a minimum C5.
      185 mph Phyllis seems accurate.
      Winnie was a low end cat 5.
      Grace was a strong cat 5 (180 mph+).
      Helen was a cat 4.
      Ida is underestimated since the 877 hPa was recorded 11 miles from the center of the storm.
      Nancy was a cat 4.
      The ACE of the season is still underestimated though.

    Typhoon Ida, allegedly one of the strongest Typhoons ever (until you consider that its estimate comes from the extremely early days of Tropical Cyclone research and like many other storms from 50s and 60s was likely overrated).

    • @aron1332
      @aron1332 2 года назад +1

      The pressure actually supported the windspeed of Ida. I think that Ida is one of the few storms at that period to have correct winds based on the pressure. The KZC reanalysis of typhoons at that period showed 178kts estimated maximum sustained winds

    • @stormdennis9042
      @stormdennis9042 2 года назад

      @@aron1332 If Ida has 205mph sustained winds than Hurricane Camille also gets to have 190mph sustained winds at landfall which the NHC are no longer buying so good luck trying to resell that idea. We've flown planes with more accurate equipment into Typhoons Tip, Nora, June, Forrest, Rita, Vanessa and Irma and the strongest of those is 190mph, so based on the hard data that we have Typhoons that intensify down into the 870s mb range do not tend to have winds above 190mph 1-min sustained.
      The only storm in the satellite era that has a credible case for having winds over 200mph is Hurricane Patricia because she had a lot of things going for her - including the warmest eye ever visited by a Recon plane (and perhaps the warmest eye ever observed in a Tropical Cyclone). But despite this and her impressive 872mb pressure (indeed she may have been deeper than that) the upcoming SFMR bias study might mean Patricia may well be downgraded, and that will also have a knock on effect for Typhoon Megi's rating too.

    • @aron1332
      @aron1332 2 года назад +1

      @@stormdennis9042 the problem with Tip, Nora, June, Forrest, Rita, Vanessa, and Irma are that most, if not all, of these systems have their winds estimated using AH77. They used the pressure recorded to those storms and get the windspeed using the AH77 WPR. The planes at that period (1970 - 1987) probably have low bias in winds.
      And about the storm in satellite era with 200 mph winds, how about Meranti? A weather station recorded around 878 mbars MSLP in Meranti at landfall when it had EWRC. It also had a very warm and dry eye similar to Patricia

    • @stormdennis9042
      @stormdennis9042 2 года назад

      @@aron1332 It's one thing to try and estimate the strength of a Tropical Cyclone, it's entirely another thing to assess cyclone strength via actual measurements because the latter holds far more weight. Unfortunately I cannot link scientific papers because RUclips will think I'm spamming but Knaff and Sampson did publish their own reanalysis on WPAC tropical cyclones during the recon era using the KZC WPR and according to them not all of the big 870s range tropical cyclones possessed ridiculously high winds, especially the largest of them like Tip. It is also important to note that those with small maximum wind radii (eg Forrest) may be overestimated by the KZC WPR. But this study is not based on ground truth.
      As for Meranti, you're referring to the reports from Itbayat Station which gave a 933.6 reading followed by an infamous 983 reading at 1800z. That could refer to a reading of 883mb but there's no way of knowing if the station was messed up by wind or a mesovort which is why it remains unverified. Patricia's eye was warmer and dryer and was all round the better storm.

    • @aron1332
      @aron1332 2 года назад +1

      @@stormdennis9042 yes, I know that Tip (and possibly June) probably have accurate wind speed due to its size and the environmental pressure but the thing is that Ida did not have that size and environmental pressure which support higher intensity in winds than Tip.
      Regarding Vanessa and its wind and pressure, I have found out this on 1984 JTWC ATCR
      It said that the 879 mbars converts into 180 (the official intensity) mph using *AH77*. This is what I am talking about on how they have low winds for that pressure.
