I replaced the motor and the blower assembly (housing and fan) and the problem is gone. I think just replacing the blower would have been enough, but I couldn't get the blower fan to come off and I had already bought the new motor.
My dryer just started acting up like this the other day. Thanks for posting your solution instead of just leaving the mystery unsolved!

I had a strong feeling it was the motor. In the beginning it would sound like that after starting the dryer, and then after a brief moment the sound would go away and keep tumbling. But it will still sound like that every time I start the dryer.
So what does this mean? Replace the motor or is it best and more cost effective to just replace the entire dryer?
It was definitely cheaper to replace parts than to buy a new dryer. I still think just replacing the blower (and not replacing the motor) would have been enough. It did take me about two days of work because I am not an appliance guy. Luckily I had the time and the tools.
