Hey, so I happen to know a bit about the story behind the game, long story short, the studio that created Zapper was, in the first place, working on a Frogger sequel, yet for some licensing issues during the development of the game , the project was aborted. The studio had by that time completed a significant part of the game, so rather that deleting everything and losing a lot of cash they ended up re-working some features and mechanics of the game but just enough so they don't get sued or anything and this is where Zapper originated from, and that's why Zapper appears so similar to Frogger, simply cause it was intended to be a Frogger game in the first place. If you're a fan of the game and you're reading this, feel free to hit me up, I'd be glad to share some infos about the game ! Love Nitro Rad for reviewing this game
I actually made a creepypasta based around that idea, titled “Frogger 3: At Frog’s End”. There’s a reading out now and it’s on Lost Episode Creepypasta Wiki
Zapper is clearly trying to cash in on that lucrative Buck Bumble gaming market, yet it didn't have a catchy song to back it up? No wonder this game is as forgotten as it is!
It was actually trying to recuperate the work and resources sunk into a Frogger 3 that was ultimately rejected by Konami in favor of Frogger: The Great Quest.
I love this game! The soundtrack is great, I really love the level design, and I used to have a lot of fun jumping on top of other crickets and holding Z.
This game has an amazing soundtrack! Did you also know that some of the tracks were composed by Andrew Morris, which did the music for Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge? You really should listen to the entire soundtrack on my channel, it is worth it!
I played both Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge and then Zapper. I loved them both and I still do. I kinda prefer cricket maybe because that electric shock attack and his overall esthetic design pleased me a lot ^^ Yeah it definitelly was the electric wave attack xD
It’s interesting coming back to this video after the Frogger marathon. I get the feeling his opinions on those games have improved since then, given his “only OK” in this video vs. his reaction to Helmet Chaos.
Hey, thanks for reviewing this game. I really enjoyed it when when I was young and still do now, but I can see what you mean that it's not that desirable. I'm just glad to see someone giving this game some recognition regardless because I felt really alone about knowing this game... And yes, I'm a silly nerd who 100% this game more than once.
(disclaimer: i am EXTREMELY biased about the game, i've been speedruning it for a while now) Hello, nice review :) I'd like to discuss some points you made in the video. You said this game is a Frogger clone. While this is mostly true, and Blitz actually had the licence for Frogger at that point which leads me to believe this was intended to be a sequel, it has a key element that you could have stressed out a bit more: you can be offensive. That may not seem to be much, but it makes a whole world of difference between just avoiding things and having the choice to go around an obstacle or destroy it. You said hovering was unnecessary and a waste of programming. This i disagree with for one reason: it's situational. Sometimes you jump into a moving enemy by accident, and this feature can save you. There is actually a small window where you can release the jump and press it again and it won't stop hovering. I think it's pretty nice to have as an emergency. At 3:35 you point out the "unnatainable" tile. While i'll agree level design is bad on some areas, there is a secret a little bit earlier in the level that allows you to get inside the wagon, and get out from this tile. You aren't supposed to be able to get to it from above, that would defeat the purpose of the secret. (It's still bad level design yeah) You didn't talk about the secret world levels! And worse than that, you go on about how pipewerx is the only one where the gameplay is different. I guess it takes a while to finish the game 100%, but just the first one of these is very different from the usual gameplay. That's all i could gather. Sorry if the formatting sucks, youtube comments are bad anyways :)
A very early memory I had was walking in a mall with my family and seeing a video game on display with a bluish background and an orange game character tapping the screen. It caught my attention but I couldn’t remember for the life of me what the game was. I can rest easy now.
Coming back from the far future where he's covered a WHOLE lot of Frogger, this dude really awoke a deep locked memory in me. I remember playing this years ago on a PS2 in Nicaragua. The game wasnt even mine, it belonged to the owner of the PS2 in the area we were staying in. I forgot the name of the game for all these years, but just seeing Zapper unlocked that deep memory from 15 years ago. Its one hell of a trip.
I actually like this game, at least more than Nitro seems to. Don't get me wrong, this game is brutally difficult especially in the bonus stages. I think you had to beat them all to get unlimited ultra zaps, which make the game way easier. That, or just put in a cheat code. Despite this, I kept coming back to it for the huge array of ideas in it. It was so diverse in enemies and places to be.
Oh man I remember seeing the ads for the GBA version in Nintendo Power all the time. They all featured Zapper with a needle in his hands (?) superimposed in front of a photo of a frog mid-croak as though he was about to puncture the poor thing's throat. The tagline there was also "One Wicked Cricket," so I think you were on the money when you celled hi a terrible insect. On an unrelated note, glad to see another retro game review. I personally enjoy these videos more than your other ones, as I'm not much for most horror games (save for something like Deadly Premonition, which I highly recommend, by the way). Usually the games you go over are ones that I missed growing up for one reason or another, and I like to see this stuff from your perspective.
Yeah I'm on the same boat as you with this game. Played it once as a kid, beat it...and forgot about it. A more fav childhood memory of this kind of game to me is Blinx
God I remember getting this game on PC and never getting it to work as a kid. Looking back I think this game was the reason I stop playing games on PC for a long time
It's much better nowadays, with digital store clients that do the installation for you, so you never have to worry about the game breaking or not working unless it was poorly optimized, which is a pretty rare occurrence.
Your channel is genuinly a treasure. You constantly bring back nostalgia from my childhood. And even the games I dont know it brings back the times of the gamecube and ps2 and such. Thankyou man

Watching This makes me want to play Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge for the PC/Ps1 Great game imo but probably Average to most other people. but oddly I remember all the levels and the Music so they did Something Right
Zapper appeared on Cartoon Network’s Toonami in between commercials, including Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee, both games I got for Christmas, including the Nintendo GameCube console of 2001
Interesting thing to note is that Zapper was developed by Blitz Games, the developers behind a lot of titles: those Burger King games on Xbox, Pac-Man World 3, Glover and most importantly Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge, a sequel to Frogger (1997) a full out reboot for the PlayStation. Blitz Games was actually developing the next Frogger game but was rejected by Konami because they wanted to make their own Frogger platformer. And because of this the character went from Frogger to an electric bug. It’s why both Zapper and Frogger are so similar in gameplay because Zapper was going to be a Frogger game!
Man this game gave me my first ever nightmare. It was just so weirdly brutal and triggered my buding fear of blood and gore I remember this game so very well

I have really found memories of zapper. Like, for me it's still the best pure frogger game there is, and that's a gameplay I really like. Still sad it's so short tho, like really the game could have used one more world at least...
According to the new steam launcher, this wasn't a clone so much as the next Frogger project, but the IP holder pulled out so they had to change the visuals
I know I'm super late but i didn't know anyone knew this game. This is my childhood fr. It's one of those games only i played as a kid because everyone else had mario and stuff like that xD this brings me joy

Thank you for reviewing another game of my childhood! It seems only me in the entire world appreciate well this game D: I even 100%'d it! In fact you miss two things which make this game better: 1) the fly animation makes sense, because you can change direction while flying,so you don't have to do two tiles at jump: 2) If you find every sphere in the world (100 in every level of the world),you can do a bonus level. Not the bonus level at the end of the level, but a ENTIRE NEW LEVEL with a different gameplay! After beating it,you can get a cheat. If you beat the last bonus level (again, not by finding every sphere in a level, but every sphere in every level in the world),you can get the infinite super zap! So there is more than that :D
This looks like an... interesting game. I found it weirdly appealing, gameplaywise, doing those kind of creative things with the Frogger formula (granted, I played only the original, so I don't know if the Frogger sequences had already done those things). I would like to see a studio that cares about aesthethics and has some money tackling this style of play. Also, loved the little shaking when the Cricket was jumping around the train.
I remember playing this game with a dance pad once. It worked surprisingly OK.
I love the internet because you get to discover rare gems like playing Zapper with a dance pad.
That's... actually a really good idea
The d means a directional-pad not a dance-pad

I *swear* I played this on the PC as a kid once and then never saw it again. Guess I know why I never rediscovered it.
Found this video after he mentioned it in his Frogger 2 review
This looks like an... interesting game. I found it weirdly appealing, gameplaywise, doing those kind of creative things with the Frogger formula (granted, I played only the original, so I don't know if the Frogger sequences had already done those things). I would like to see a studio that cares about aesthethics and has some money tackling this style of play.
Also, loved the little shaking when the Cricket was jumping around the train.
I surprisingly forgot this game existed until I found this video
