No judging! Lol. I know it’s excessive…that’s the point of the video. And I’m not alone in this space. So be kind, have a laugh, and let’s work together to end the obnoxious over-consumerism in the planner community.
Let me say this, I had a lot of stuff and I had to cut off a lot of subscriptions to not have my house overpopulated with STUFF. I have enjoyed my space and I love trying new stuff and seeing a roll of washi finished and empty with planners filled and my PILE going down. No judgement for you, we all walk our own road to stop being over-consumers.
No judging! I am in a similar boat (I even have a very similar looking dog who tries to tempt me with playing ball). I join you in your mantra: I don't need anymore planner supplies.
They are definitely two distinct hobbies! I always find it easier to pick out supplies than actually use them. Maybe it's because you can't "fail" at picking something out - everything that's marketed to us is beautiful and beautifully packaged. But when I make something myself, I might end up feeling very "meh" about it. It can be less immediately satisfying, especially when I don't account for a learning curve - which you have for any skill or process.
In 2011 I was having dinner at a restaurant with three of my friends, all of whom were 10+ years older than me, and were fast approaching becoming seniors. One of my friends announced she had just counted her cross-stitch magazines and stated she had 400+. Our whole group started questioning why she had so many. Well, her answer was she did cross-stitch every spring while watching professional baseball on TV, and reserve the rest of the year for other crafts (which meant she had tons of supplies for those as well). She was quite defensive about her collection probably because of how we reacted to her announcement. I acknowledged she probably bought each magazine because she saw a project in it she liked, and she agreed. I asked her if she liked even one project per magazine, how long would it take for her to finish 400 projects. She looked shocked. I then suggested she might want to actually review each magazine, green tab the projects she would definitely like to do, and yellow tab the ones she might like to do. She came to our next monthly dinner and told us she now had 35 magazines, and had donated the rest to her local library. Recently, I attended her funeral where her daughter told me her mother still had 20 magazines with projects green-tabbed but not yet started. As my friend had gotten older and her health declined, she did not have the ability to cross-stitch any longer. The daughter informed me she was emotionally overwhelmed with her mother's collections and, in order to preserve her sanity while attending to the needs of her three active teenagers, was just going to call a junk hauler outfit to come and take everything because her mental health was more important to her than the "stuff" her mother had collected during her lifetime. I will note my friend's home was neat as a pin and extraordinarily clean, but also filled with curio cabinets full of her collections. Also, in another conversation my friend stated she truly believed her daughter would treasure her collection of glass hand-juicers. I believe it's human nature to hoard resources due to early humans' food insecurities, but it has morphed these days into middle-class hoarding due to emotional insecurity. I struggle with my collection of diamond painting canvases (about 60) and literally had to cut myself off from watching any RUclips videos about diamond painting in order to stop buying. I just finished watching a RUclipsr's video regarding how to organize pencil crayon collections. She must have over a 1000 pencil crayons, most of which are expensive professional grade pencils, but she doesn't earn her living as a professional artist. Many of us need to stop giving in to buying things just because we can afford them, and start asking why we are essentially inviting more clutter into our lives. It is truly important to develop this mindset when we are younger because if we are lucky we will grow old. That means we too will leave our relatives with our stuff to deal with when we die.
@@EileenORiordan-cx7vr i do think the internet (all the channels for viewing) has created this monster…I have been complicit in watching, buying, watching buying…instead of using the stuff. We all must do better😢
1. You're my new best friend and you're right about everything. 2. I have that and that and that and want those. 3. The planner community got me through five awful years at work then the pandemic years. 4. It was cheaper than buying cars, shoes or going on trips. 5. Everything was so pretty. The world needed more pretty.
"Once a source of joy, now it's just a towering mountain of guilt and glitter"--I may print and laminate that for my planner, or at least my budget planner! All hit home!
I think this was a very important video for the whole planner community. We start planning to be organised. Then get seduced by the pretty stuff out there.
Not a planner person, but a quilter.... any creative pursuit requires supplies and sometimes the supplies spark the project. I have the same problem as you started with, just different format (mine is fabric) and I can actually see my " no buy" turning into finished projects for 2025 because the time I would have spent shopping for the "next best thing" will be put in to USING all the best things that are already here from 2020 thru 2024
I love that you've got a plan to use what you have. I’m thinking of trying to use up a different sticker book every month. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is only 12 books a year. But hey, as long as I’m loving and using them, that’s what counts. ❤️
I have a different problem! I’m a serial crafter! And a serial collector of supplies! Junk journaling, BuJo, knitting, quilting, crochet, Pysanki… 🙄 So I feel ya!
I just randomly came across your video because I've been digging back into my own vaults of art supplies as I get back into traditional media, fountain and dip pens, ink, paper, etc. (I am also into sewing and quilting, so I have a massive fabric collection, and I'm into woodworking and woodturning, so I have a massive collection of wood in my stash, etc.) In short, I totally get where you're coming from. 😁 There is something that I began to internalize about 25 years ago, and it has served me well over the years. It doesn't completely prevent my consuming new things when a new interest pops up, but it does help to keep things in perspective, and guide me happily through times like you're discussing, where purchasing gets put aside, and we dive into all of the things that we already own. The core idea is simple: There is a difference between "consuming", and "digesting". We sit down to eat a meal, and it's very pleasurable, but it doesn't last long. What takes more time is the slow breakdown and absorption of all those nutrients, which we then use to build ourselves up into better and healthier bodies. Digestion takes time. Consuming is a temporary and momentary thrill, but it's the one that the predatory marketing industry feeds on, to try and convince us to keep buying and buying and buying. But at some point, like where you are in this video, there comes a time when you push back the chair and say "I'm full", and then you go on about your life, and you digest those things that you've consumed, and incorporate them into your being. It's a good path, and I'm glad that you posted this video. I hope others can also start to push back from the constant consumption, and start to digest those things that they've already consumed, but just haven't processed into whatever final form they will eventually become. 😊👍
I'm interested in several different crafts and am like this with all of them. It dawned on me that the reason I was buying so many planners and craft supplies, etc, was because of all the videos I was watching on RUclips. That's when I realised what the word 'influencer' meant. The videos influence you to buy things in a more subtle way than obvious advertising.
It's real! I'm a reformed journal and card making hoarder/overspender. I stopped buying cold turkey in 2022 when I turned 56 and realized that I would have been almost able to retire had I put the money I spent on these hobbies into my retirement account instead. That was a large bucket of ice water right in the face! I canceled all my subscriptions, unsubscribed to all the RUclips and Instagram channels, and unfollowed all the influencers. It was very hard, but I am tremendously grateful I did it.
Don't look at Pinterest, etc. Seriously....when I stopped looking at what others were doing, it made a difference for me. You're title for this caught my attention. Sometimes watching a video like this is like an A.A. meeting for an alcoholic. It just reminds us what we don't want. I love that you've said a no buy year. I'm subscribing. Would love to see your journey and how much better you feel when you "shop your home" and it costs you nothing (well, at least nothing more than has already been spent.) Good luck, great work. Thanks for this video.
I was 100% the kid that never wanted to use my stickers out of fear that I would "waste" them on the "wrong" thing. Now I'm the sticker girl with adult money lol
I only started collaging a year ago. “Of course” I had to acquire stickers, stamps, paper, etc. Every time I went to the dollar store I picked up something. But I have a limited amount of space and I’ve finally hit the point where I can’t add another thing. And I said to myself if I can’t make a spread with all the stuff I have, I suck as an artist and should throw it all away.
I had no idea planner supplies/decorating was a thing, but I have been a paper crafter for 2 1/2 decades. FOMO in the scrapbooking & card-making world is just as real. I have enough card stocks that I could literally stack them floor to ceiling and line an entire wall. I couldn’t possibly use it all in this lifetime. Same thing with stamps, dies, and ink pads. It’s madness! I feel your pain. Good luck with your plan. The best hope is to avoid temptation all together and don’t watch the content out there.
Very vulnerable and clearly relatable for a lot of people. I’ve been journaling for at least 20 years and my advice to combat the fomo is to identify the creators that are advertising vs the ones doing actual journaling. Unfollow the advertisers. You don’t need to know about what cute limited product is dropping and you won’t miss those videos I promise. For the newbies just starting that want a cute journal just pick a color scheme or theme and get ONE sticker book and ONE paper stack that looks good together and that is what I use for the year. I’ve never run out before the year’s end. The satisfaction I get from using up a whole sheet of stickers is so good! When you shop for supplies less you have more time to spend journaling.
Over $1,000 in a year for STICKER BOOKS! Came Christmas, I had no money. Why? STICKER BOOKS. I managed Christmas somehow but with much regret. I gave away almost all the books and kept about 10. To me it was throwing money away with the donations and that feeling made me sick. This year I ordered one planner and a budget extension pack. That was it. And I got them 50% off! I use the planner every day. It is a lifesaver. I just don't NEED stickers, I finally realized. This affects all ages -- I'm 67! We'll make it!
Yes!!! Overconsumerism is a hot topic, more people are realizing it's a con, seriously how many paper products, sew alongs, knit alongs, planners, hot products of the month club etc do we really need. And honestly these companies are making thousands upon thousands off are hard earned money.I stand up and say No more.I'll treat myself to something that I want and enjoy.
@@Partyofone63 and they feed on us ADHD’rs that hyper-fixated on the product. We literally can not stop thinking about it till we have it, have ALL of it and get bored of it or Master it. Then we don’t care about it and it goes into a doom pile
I have limited resources so I plan with a Leuctrum bound journal and a pack of high quality pens. I decorate it with my acrylic stamps and inks and even have been pulling out some old Mrs Grossman's stickers I've been holding on to. I find a great deal of satisfaction of seeing how I've given new life to my old stuff and I'm not concerned that the planning community wouldn't give it a second look.
I’ve only just started down the planner rabbit hole after recently discovering Traveller’s Notebooks in Japan. I watched some videos to see how people use them and was really surprised to see so many people hoarding every single thing they bring out. I found it quite disturbing so your video is really helpful in explaining how we get sucked in by FOMO. Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m so glad I watched it at the beginning of my journaling journey. I don’t have a single sticker book yet! Like you I have been using a BUJO for years and find it great. Your dog is the cutest!
It appears to me that the planner supply industry has done to the planner community what was done to the scrapbooking community in the 80s and early 2000s...use FOMO, and "perfection" to generate sales and cause us to forget that we are after capturing a memory/ managing our time. I have learned that I need stay true to the planner/supplies I need instead of being someone else's clone.
I think all crafters have the same addiction to supplies. My husband says I have enough polymer clay to make a 1-1 scale model of the Titanic !!!!! I've just finished sorting out my craft room (only took 3 years!). I 've sold some bits, given others to charities and binned some. Now I need to get crafting :)
Your dog is lovely and your message is a good one. I've got a tally running of sticker sheets I have coming in and what I'm using up that helps me keep being realistic with myself. I know I've gone off certain types of stickers and I'm trying to use them up on my desk pad where it doesn't matter, on the kitchen calendar, and in my everyday carry for the first half of the year. I know what I want my planning to look like now, what I enjoy and how my style essentially works. The same thing happens for yarn and fibrecrafting supplies. You reach a point where your stash starts to stress you out and it's a wake-up call to use it or remove it. There will always be more yarn, there will always be more stickers.
I "shopped" my own Stationery Stash of Shame for my 2025 planners. 😂 I'm doing a no buy year for planners, notebooks, and planner accessories, too, even though my paper hoard is just one small moving box's worth so far. I'm also working to craft/crochet/sew down my much larger hoards of yarn, fabric, patterns, and arts and crafts supplies with minimal necessary additional purchases to get projects done. We just moved in August, and let me tell you, packing all of the stuff I've accumulated over the 9 years since our LAST move is an eye-opening, somewhat embarrassing experience!
I need to get up every morning and watch this video. I also am on a no buy plan for 2025 and I have made it to day 6. 🎉🎉🎉. I feel like there needs to be an AA for people like me. My problem is I have multiple hobbies. Scrapbooking, card making, quilting, crocheting…. It is a sickness. “Hello, my name is Kathy and I am hoarder of supplies.”
@kathyar015 yeah. I also have another hobby with lots of materials. There the excess bothers me a bit more, tbh. I'm planning on gifting quire a but of yarn to my friend
@@kathyar015 same, exactly the same. And I can’t afford it anymore, monetarily, with respect to space nor with my loss of sanity. Let’s beat this beast!
Looks like I have found my tribe! I am trying to get on the same track-no spending and clearing out stuff I will never use. It’s a daunting prospect for sure! I have had some of this stuff for DECADES. New subscriber here! 😂
Holy cow! This is absolutely me! Except in addition to planner supplies, I’ve collected card making tools and supplies, which includes acrylic and watercolor paints, colored pencils, alcohol markers, stamps and ink pads, embossing folders, dies, flower forming foam and it’s tools, 3 die cutting machines, a Cricut Maker, and any kind of paper imaginable, plain & patterned, chip board, tissue paper, rice paper, & vellum. Resin art, tie-die, and soap making. I only stopped so you could take a breath after that huge sentence. My poor house is a disaster. I have not made anything at all yet except a handful of cards, two iron-on shirts, and one vinyl wall art piece. Oh and don’t forget the sewing stuff. Two sewing machines and numerous unfinished sewing projects. Yes, I have problems. I love your video, but I REALLY love your dog! Adorable!
True, could never figure out how decirative planners make your life better. It is a place for jotting down quick notes & reminders, not a be-all-end onto itself. I just use a simple MUJI weekly on 1-side, grid paper to the right, and a Field Notes style notebook for memonotes, both used for planning. Most of your time in a day is devoted to other activites. Keep track of the time you plan, if it goes past a few minutes of total time, including buying, sourcing inlune, watching planning videos, you know you need professional help. Stay organized, but stay sane, and use your time wisely.
I don‘t know why the algorithm suggested your Video to me. I do not own a single sticker book or know what „planner peace“ means 😅 But: I really liked listening to you. You have a level of self-reflection that is outstanding. When you said „I‘m buying hope“ that really touched me❤
I would like to cheer you up, but i know my English is terrific (although i can understand it quite well, so i saw your video). I feel very related but i did it with yarns, hooks, knitting and crochet material. Some years have passed and i knitted nothing. But in times of dissatisfaction or stress (for example during exams period) i still feel tempted to buy and craft new things. Now that i study Psicology I understand a few things. Alow me (despite my bad Elglish) to expres two ideas: First, you have to guess (and “to know” if you can) WHY you are doing (or willing to do) something. You said something about it in your video: maybe is the desire of control. But it can be mixed with anxiety, procrastination, the image of you reaching something. What is that "something"? Buying seem the easy way to reach anything. But it is not the REAL way. Second idea: You will never get rid of that impulse. But you can reduce it significantly if you are enough brave to cut exposure. Trying to rationalize while you are in front of something that stimulates your impulses won’t work. You have already realized that (“my rational mind go on vacation”). This is not a coward decision but a brave one. Exposure is fine in some cases to face fears, but NOT to face addictions and cycles. What's more, the smarter you are, the better your mind's excuses are. Whoever is reading this, I got you. You cannot suddenly stop an activity that fills a large part of your time and your mind. So, the third idea I could mention is that you find a healthy, non-commercial activity with which to fill your mind. Go back to the libraries, walk, observe nature and everything that is real. You don't have to control it, you have to learn to be at peace and take pride in the fact that you don't need to buy anything to enjoy your existence and your relationships. My best wishes for Dakota and for everyone that is realising that the desire of buying has nothing to do with mental health. I hope you found creative ways to cut down exposure.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out with this comment. I think I your English is lovely and you perfectly got your point across. These are very valid points and definitely helpful to consider as I move further down this path. ❤️
Totally agree. I am an addict to buying stuff and I must follow my plan…no scrolling through my emails and looking at Joanne’s, Amazon, Michael’s, etc. I am a hoarder and I admit that. Now, that I am admitting that I am an addict and a hoarder, I am giving stuff away via happy mail, Salvation Army, etc. I am not buying any additional supplies for planners and junk journals/art journals as I have more than enough of everything. And a big problem for me is that I fall for the buying aspect of every video, reel, etc. Everything and everyone is selling and selling. This entire situation is out of control. Thanks for doing this video.❤️❤️
Michael's is my downfall. I'm not allowed to walk in there anymore. My mom was a store manager there for a while, and she would bring home BAGS of stuff, because her discount was so good she couldn't resist. So in my defense, some of the stuff I own was gifted to me by her, but it's a weak excuse. Lol.
I was into crafts and I buyed a lot of things that were like "I may use this for a craft someday" an stashed a lot of milk cartons and stuff that might've ended up in the trash Eventually, I started to feel very restless, there were so many things in my desk So I sent many of them to the trash I felt much better after, like I could breath better when I was in my desk
I hear ya, girlfriend!!! I'm a quilter and fabric hoarder and have the same thoughts an feelings as you do with planning supplies. Fabric manufacturers employ the same tactics to entice people to "get it before it's gone" then I don't want to use the fabric for fear that I'll never see it again and it's too pretty to cut up. How silly is that? It's so difficult to declutter creative supplies because we can see all the possibilities. LOVE your sweet fur baby!!!! He's a good helper. 🥰
Thanks so much for this. As a scrapbooker I have the exact same problem with scrapbooking supplies. Hoping your videos can help me conquer my own clutter.
I am not a part of the planner community. Your follow up video to this one led me here. Your message is a powerful one. Swap out 'planner supplies' with whatever we are hoarding and the message is the same. Thanks.
The companies really know how to get us! I've seen so many posts about no buys this year across all communities. Planners, make up, clothes, kitchen gadgets... i love it. I think we're all gonna expand our comfort zone this year!
Omg I needed this video today!! I have always used a physical planner, in school & for work. Usually I buy the pretty one or the "costumised" one but they never fit my needs 100%. In the end of 2024 my daughter helped me make a planner in Canva that I put in my 6 ring binder 😜 I love it, it is so pretty. Then I discovered bullet journals!! I started to buy all the things , teip, markers, fineliners & so much more just to realize that this is not going to work for me. I'm not creative enough, I can't draw & I don't have the patience to sit & make a new spread every other day /week. But if I only had that teip or that sticker my now existing Canva planner would look amazing!! But I already have all I need & I don't want to fall in that buying everything trap. So thank you for helping me stop & reflect & deside that I can't buy anything new until I used up the things I already have bought. Thank you and have a wonderful day ❤
I don’t use planners but I love to hoard and design bujo pages. I have more pens than a human should own, more Washi than I need and a box of stickers that I’m not sure I’ll “get around to using”. This is the first time I’ve seen your channel. Thank you for giving voice to our madness. Fomo is real…real expensive!!
I have noticed that when I’m stressed, overworked and too busy to actually paint or draw I get the urge to buy more art supplies. It’s an illusionary step towards to the thing that I would actually want to do. “See, I’m almost painting if I’m getting this new watercolour paper and think what I could do with it. I’m still doing painting adjacent things so that part is not completely out of my day”. But of course just getting the stuff doesn’t have the same effect as using them. To get out of this I’ve tried to make my project smaller and put less demand on myself. Instead of a full painting I might do sketchbook page. Instead of a finished piece an unfinished quick drawing is enough on busy days. Just do something. And don’t think that the supplies are too precious to use.
This is a genius idea! And so insightful that buying equates doing in our brains. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I’m learning so much from all these kind and thoughtful comments ❤️
Junk Journaler here....I'm doing a no shop 2025 unless I need something like glue. I'm using what I have...and many junk journalers are joining me. Thank you for posting this!
My issue is overbuying when I restock. I ran low on washi…so I bought 6 packs of washi and 200 sheets of A4 washi paper. I was low on ink for my fountain pen…so I bought many, many bottles and a few more pens. I ran out of scrap paper for collages…so I brought home a whole bag of free and low cost books from the library sale. I need more. I buy too much. Then I am overwhelmed and avoid crafting so it doesn’t get used. Then I use some. The quantity gets to a good level. I’m so happy I craft joyously. Then I start running low. I get miserly. I start no longer enjoying it. I get sad. I go through the emotional rollercoaster of choosing new items, buying them, and waiting for them. Then I have too much again. 2025 is the year I commit to only restocking “enough”.
Sending hugs and support! I know I can have compulsive spending tendencies and so I stayed away from washi tape and planner hoarding, I keep my supplies to a small predefined area. I actually use a boring cheap planner and have gotten the same one for like five years now. I have other similar hobbies where it’s gotten easy to buy too much. The capitalism FOMO is real. So I want to say a genuine thank you for this, as a reminder that it’s just stuff and we don’t need to buy so much of it. Good luck and all the hugs! (Oh and go unsubscribe from the email lists and RUclips channels, they are like kryptonite!) best wishes for you going forward! ❤
When adhd meets planners 😂 it is this lol. I’m not judging, this is also me. It’s just refreshing to see it isn’t just me. Don’t beat yourself over it. You figured out the problem and are taking steps to make it better. I feel like I’m in the same boat. I’m trying to hard to dehoard by house and it’s tough
What a timely and honest video. I’ve been going thru the exact same thing for a while now. I stopped buying the washi tape first, then I stopped with the sticker books. I have a bunch of unused Happy planners because I got them when they were 90% off. ( I still have trouble resisting a 90% off 18 month planner cuz I get a full year out of the last 12 months) I do use my date and number stickers to redate those older planners. What mostly works for me is the small happy planners that I carry in my bag everywhere so I can keep track of all the family appointments. (And I do not decorate that one). And I mostly use only the monthly pages, not the weekly. I’ve donated some supplies and planners to Goodwill and I will donate more. Thanks for saying what no one else is saying.
It's so comforting to know I'm not alone in these issues. I'm on a strict No Buy this year; I have to use up my stash. I have way too much, and yes it's partly FOMO and it's partly not finding *my* planner peace. I realized though that peace is something I have to make, as no one else's system will be 100% for me. No judgment, just acceptance and I see you. I feel as though the planner community/consumerism currently is how the beauty community consumerism was years ago. Everyone has to have the latest.
I just about died laughing when you said the only thing that ever worked was bullet journal. I have a small collection of planners, washi tape and stickers of my own. The only thing I use religiously for last 8 years is bullet journal notebook and black pen. The rest of the supplies is just my dragon horde 😅
So real. I found myself downsizing too and absolutely not watching any "unboxing" or "set up with me" videos. I have been purposely watching minimalistic videos with techniques, not products.
I counted my sticker books this past weekend and I have 60 books and additional loose stickers in a storage bin. I decided to not buy any more this year or next year. My cart is full and I don’t want to buy more storage. Everything has to fit in the cart. I am also feeling very free about using them. I put stickers on notebooks, my computer, in my planners, on the outside of my planners and I invite my daughter to use them too.
You are so much braver than me! What I found helpful was to unfollow all the influencers. It won't remove all the content, but it does cut it down. If I get too much, I resell it on an Ebay 'destash' lot. I have ADHD as well, so I totally understand how you got there. I had to really change who I followed on social media to change my purchasing patterns.
Girl, I'll just say this: I've been papercrafting literally for decades, so I can empathize when you speak of drowning in sticker books, planners and sticky notes. My only consistency has been Project Life, so for that I'm thankful I was obsessed with taking photos and documenting my life and my family. I, too, am a Stalogy girl, and I have had to come to terms with "planner peace," which for me equates to not much more than a black pen and a bit of decorating that will never, ever look like the gorgeous pages we've seen on Instagram, forget about it. It is what it is. For 2025? Let's start where we are, let's use what we have, let's do what we can.❤
Doggo is the cutest and bestest boy ❤ I think this video is for anyone who does crafting or creating! I'm a junk/art journaler and I feel called out lol ...esp bc a huge facet of junk journaling is the recycling/giving new life to garbage (like a cereal box, envelopes, coffee sleeves, etc). I see the "future" in what it COULD become and hope I can transform it like other people have. So its hard for me to throw out, say, an Amazon mailer (crazy, I know). My way of dealing with it for now has been using the stuff! In my own journal or in journals for others. Another thing is trading in snail mail.. that way you're not spending money but get the dopamine of shopping/new stuff 😂😂
i understand where your coming from. I make all kinds of crafts and I am a seamstress mostly. I watch Midwest Magic cleaning for a while now and since started going through my hoards of craft supplies. If I haven't touched it in years its leaving. It has felt so good. mostly donate to thrift stores so someone else may use it and usually goes for a good cause, helping the community I live near. I am 61 and vowed to not leave my sons with a bunch of stuff to go through after I am gone. Good Luck in using what you have, Thanks for the video
As a planner sticker shop owner, I wholeheartedly agree with the message in this video (not that you needed my validation!). We don't have to have every little thing, we just have to have and keep what works for us! Thank you for sharing and for being so vulnerable with us.
Thank you for creating beautiful things for us to buy and use. I love sticker shops, especially small business owners. And honestly, things I buy from shops like yours are the ones I actually use all the time. ❤️
@@DakotaRebel Actually, you have purchased from my shop on Etsy! The initals are SSS and if I wrote it in emojis : ✨✨ Studios!🤭 RUclips just happened to send your video to my Recommended VIdeos and I was like..."wait a minute! That name sounds familiar!!!! Thanks again for sharing and for your support!
In the spirit of vulnerability, it took me years to finally acknowledge to myself that my jealousy over the perfect planner spread was not the “stuff” it was that I was constantly letting myself down by not doing anything I was writing down (or I had nothing to write down). After going to therapy and addressing my anxiety, I have gotten to a much better place with planner FOMO but still get tempted. So glad I found you!
I have never felt so seen, so understood, so represented on the Internet. Are we sisters of different mothers? You definitely win at the Happy Planner/washi tape/sticky note game, BUT "My name is Krys and I am a planner addict." I started using a bullet journal in September 2015 and haven't wavered. It's my unicorn planner. Until this year. I got sucked into the Hobonichi Cousin vortex and I'm trying it. I have to admit I'm liking it but my bullet journals are half the price and I can certainly enter my lists and journaling and ephemera in a manner similar to what I'm doing in the Cousin... I am also addicted to notebooks. I lost count when I was rearranging my office this past Xmas vacation. Here I am, on the record: I WILL NOT BUY ANY MORE PLANNER SUPPLIES IN 2025. Do you hear me, world? If I place any on my Amazon order, or my Temu order, CANCEL them. Even though I am a new TCMC and Planner Monkey addict, I'M DONE! Thanks for this video. It's been truly enlightening!!!!
I now only buy to REPLACE. That allows me to get that adrenaline rush, but without the guilt. After all, if I have to replace something, I’m using it … I did have to unsubscribe from myriads of emails, and I haven’t touched FB and IG in months. That’s probably been the best way of avoiding the FOMO - and has allowed me to be happy shopping the stash of things I actually already own. Great video, BTW: it’s the one I wasn’t expecting and didn’t know I still needed. TFS! ❤
Your assistant is so helpful bringing you his favorite balls lol 😂 I’m so happy you posted this, thank you!! I saved your video so it can help me remember my why when I feel like shopping. I recently had a realization about my overconsumption and shopping addiction. It’s been tough to realize that I’ve been sucked into traps like fomo, marketing, and the scarcity mindset. And if I’m honest with myself it totally has to do with seeking control and feeling like the next sticker sheet will change my life for the better. I would be happy to join a support group with you! Subscribed to watch your journey 😊
This video is actually pretty nice. The thumbnail and the topic matter kept bothering me, so I knew it was for me 😁 Not from the planner community, but I love stationary. I also don't have that many stickers and stuff, and when I do, I end not using, because I get worried about "what if it ends and I won't be able to buy again?", "It is too pretty to use", "I wouldn't make one masterpiece as wonderful as this supply" and so on...this video changed and will change many people perspectives. Your self-reflection made me also reflect about myself. Buying this stuff won't be a problem as long as we put limits on it :)
I feel seen by this video! I had to move last week, and I was so embarrassed to see how much stationery I had hoarded. So I am on a no-buy of notebooks, fountain pens, fountain pen inks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, post-its, and memo pads. I absolutely need to finish what I have first before I even LOOK at another pencil or fountain pen ink!
Thank you for being so transparent. You are definitely not alone in the planner/paper craft overbuying and hoarding. I’m right there with you. It’s now even to the point when I see videos for new stuff I have zero desire to get the latest & greatest because I’m drowning in all the once was latest & greatest, that just sits collecting dust. I’m doing the no buy too. I broke my ankle two weeks ago and will be non weight bearing in a cast for a total of 6 weeks. Sooo I’ve pulled out my hoard of hand lettering supplies and have been practicing every day. Helps with the need to feel crafty, and I don’t have to buy anything. Good luck on your no buy year! Cheering from the sidelines
Thank you for this video, I really really really needed it. I've been too kind to myself and let things get out of hand so I'm totally judging myself if it means getting rid of 80% of my "collection". I've been staring at my hoarding piles of journaling and stationery shhhhhcrap, I don't know how I let it get out of control but it is what it is. I came up with a rough plan today while working from home, and I just reached out to the first mountain of crap and sorting into four piles Keep (very small pile), Donate, Recycle and Biff Out. I've surprised myself how ruthless I have been but I've given myself one week to sort this out once and for all and to cure my hoarding habit, wish me luck - here's to a clutter/hoarding-free 2025
Oh all of this. Plus the..."not using it because there might be a better opportunity to use them" thing. Use the stickers. Use the tape. Honestly, something better isn't coming before the glue on them fails.
Yeah… glad you made this video because the consumerism is out of control. 2025 is the year for no planner supplies ring bought. I have wayyyyyy too much stuff! This year I’m using what I have!
I managed to stop doing this in 2024 ! I hoarded some super pretty stickers because I wanted to use them on the "perfect setup" only nothing was ever perfect enough to justify using something this pretty. This year, I used the prettiest stuff and I got so much more joy out of doing my yearly setup ! You'll get there too and I promise you bullet journalling will get 100% more fun !
This. Right. Here! You are definitely not alone. What i thought was a nice hobby of making my planner pretty, had turned into nothing but a mess that I try to avoid at all costs 😂 I've spent more time collecting and hoarding, than actually using my items to enhance my planning experience. As much as I want to, I never use my planners. I always end up back to basics, using a regular notebook and whatever writing utensil I find.
I was obsessed with The Happy Planner. Bought a new planner every year; stocked up on the $20 sticker books every other month. Then I moved to SoCal and went from a 2 bedroom house to a 560sqft studio with no storage space. I sadly sold bins of my supplies for $10-20 just to get rid of them. 😢
I get it! 😘 this is a no buy year also for stamping and scrapbooking supplies. Unless Tim Holtz releases something FOMO. Hawk is priceless- thank you for giving him a great home, he adores you.
“I’m buying hope” - I love this line!!! This is one of my favorite videos (saved to watch later to remind myself that I’m buying said hope”). Great rationalizations….but also inspiring to try and slow the shopping roll. Thank you for this!
I can totally relate, I'm not a "planner girl" but a card maker and a few years ago when Micheals had their hot buy paper pads that were full size but only 5 dollars i was a fend for those, had to have them, stalked people on instragram to find out the sale day and then bought them all. Often i would only use 5 or 6 sheets out of the entire pad,did it stop me from buying their next release..nope. I have stacks and stacks of full size paper pads i just had to have.. still waiting to be used.
Crafting supplies are my clients' hardest category - and mine too! For me, it helps to put a "think about it for 24 hours before buying" rule and go through my collection at least quarterly to get rid of items that seemed like a good idea at the time but have lost their luster for me. Lots of wisdom in this video - thank you for sharing!
I bought stuff in 2025, but I am on board with your vibe to abstain from buying in 2025. I make journals from recycled materials. I am going to attempt the spending freeze with you! Thank you for sharing this!
I don't do a planner, but I journal. I learned long ago to use the pretty things (use the good towels!). Don't keep it for something "special" because nothing will ever be special enough. I also try to use at least 10 different items per page (not including stamps and ink), because I know that I'm using up my supplies that way. It's working for me.
I don’t use planners but I did get sucked into buying a really pretty one once and have purchased a couple sticker books thinking I would use them in my hobby. My “thing” is scrapbooking which has the same hex on me as planners do on you. I keep buying paper pads and sticker sheets! And not the little 6”X 6” size but the 12” x 12” size! Lured in by sales, clearance and the promise of free shipping, I buy way more than I need! I am currently purging, sorting and organizing my stash and am trying to stay strong in not buying in 2025…right after my order comes in! Stay strong and great job!
OOOH! I could do an entire video about the trap of "free shipping." Also, I am right there with you on the paper pads. My mom is a scrapbooker, and I will use scraps of those beautiful papers to decorate my planner pages, but not nearly enough to justify the amount of them we collectively share.
I felt this in my soul 😂 Also, I have found that hoarding your supplies means that a lot of the stickers and washi will lose their stickiness over time. I have recently started bullet journaling using my stickers and love it! I also rarely go on Planner Instagram because I do fall for all hype. ❤
"A towering mountain of guilt and glitter" YES!!!! Like many here, I too am doing things much differently in 2025 than in previous years (though, it's junk journal supplies rather than planner stuff, but it's much the same but FAR MORE JUNK)...So glad your beautiful beastlie is there for support and a perfect kind of assistance.
My jaw dropped at 1:30 at the post it drawer 😂 Very easy to fall into this……still listening to the video…I’ve found when I have a larger storage container, the more things collect. But if I put things in a smaller container as I’m declutterring, it’s much less likely that I am to get an out-of-control pile again. Hope that helps 😄
I'm in...no spending on planner supplies! I have an overflow that will last me a good 5 - 6 years. I will use what I have and feel good about it. Thanks for sharing!
No judging!
@@tracyteaches8747 (trying to get there...thanks for the inspiration and encouragement)
No judging! I am in a similar boat (I even have a very similar looking dog who tries to tempt me with playing ball). I join you in your mantra: I don't need anymore planner supplies.
@@tammygant4216 you are welcome.
I am using what I have until my storage falls in my foot.
I realized that my hobby wasn't actually planning or crafting, but my hobby was collecting supplies. When I let it go, it was a big release.
God it’s nice to know I’m not alone…
Mine too
Me too girl.

“Planners represent control in an uncontrollable world”. I’m stealing that quote😊
@@EileenORiordan-cx7vr well said!!!
@@EileenORiordan-cx7vr i do think the internet (all the channels for viewing) has created this monster…I have been complicit in watching, buying, watching buying…instead of using the stuff. We all must do better😢
Love your doggie. He is so sweet and loving.
I need this video on repeat all year long.
@@SixteenThirtyFivehellooo, it's me. Seriously when you like too many things the problem is multiplied 😅
@@CrisOnTheInternet Amen! Top that with ADD and PTSD and you have a disaster waiting!😂🤣
Same here ❤😂
YES!! I am so with you!! Let's make 2025 the year we use our stuff!! 💖💖
He IS the bestest goodest boy. He knew that project was stressing you out and gave you the cuddles.
I just randomly came across your video because I've been digging back into my own vaults of art supplies as I get back into traditional media, fountain and dip pens, ink, paper, etc. (I am also into sewing and quilting, so I have a massive fabric collection, and I'm into woodworking and woodturning, so I have a massive collection of wood in my stash, etc.)
In short, I totally get where you're coming from. 😁
There is something that I began to internalize about 25 years ago, and it has served me well over the years.
great analogy - thanks! yes, this video made me laugh because it is so relatable
@@robertadorger8653 I had to remove myself from Facebook groups so I wouldn’t see what I didn’t have. It helped a lot
I was 100% the kid that never wanted to use my stickers out of fear that I would "waste" them on the "wrong" thing. Now I'm the sticker girl with adult money lol
Ooh, the number of times adult money has gotten me in trouble at a Michael’s 😂😂
Yes!!! Overconsumerism is a hot topic, more people are realizing it's a con, seriously how many paper products, sew alongs, knit alongs, planners, hot products of the month club etc
do we really need. And honestly these companies are making thousands upon thousands off are hard earned money.I stand up and say No more.I'll treat myself to something that I want and enjoy.

I'm planning on doing this soon. Found a local one. I just need to box up and make the call. Such a great idea.
Now that’s a project! I’d love to see a massive Titanic made out of clay. And it would certainly keep you occupied 😂
“Hello, my name is Kathy and I am hoarder of supplies.”
hiiiiii Kathy....
welcome to Crafters Anonymous 😂
I do not own a single sticker book or know what „planner peace“ means 😅
But: I really liked listening to you.
Alow me (despite my bad Elglish) to expres two ideas:
First, you have to guess (and “to know” if you can) WHY you are doing (or willing to do) something.
Lol.
No judgement, you are not alone. I am right there with you. Need to stop saving stuff for the “perfect” time.
I love that the dog is just there, patiently watching. So sweet!
He's such a love. He definitely made the whole process more fun for me.
I was into crafts and I buyed a lot of things that were like "I may use this for a craft someday" an stashed a lot of milk cartons and stuff that might've ended up in the trash
Eventually, I started to feel very restless, there were so many things in my desk
So I sent many of them to the trash
I felt much better after, like I could breath better when I was in my desk
I hear ya, girlfriend!!! I'm a quilter and fabric hoarder and have the same thoughts an feelings as you do with planning supplies. Fabric manufacturers employ the same tactics to entice people to "get it before it's gone" then I don't want to use the fabric for fear that I'll never see it again and it's too pretty to cut up. How silly is that? It's so difficult to declutter creative supplies because we can see all the possibilities. LOVE your sweet fur baby!!!! He's a good helper. 🥰
That was the best and bravest planner supplies video I've ever seen. Thank you for being so authentic.
Thank you! That means a lot.
Thanks so much for this. As a scrapbooker I have the exact same problem with scrapbooking supplies. Hoping your videos can help me conquer my own clutter.
You're so welcome. I hope they help you! I'm cheering for you ❤️
I've started buying A5 planners for my friends and hosting "planning parties" to help me get rid of all the excess supplies I've hoarded.
Love this idea!!
Your self-reflection is very nice to hear.
It's wild...I feel seen and called out at the same time! LOL... Thanks for being real.
lol hello :)
Junk Journaler here....I'm doing a no shop 2025 unless I need something like glue. I'm using what I have...and many junk journalers are joining me. Thank you for posting this!
Love how your dog is “helping”. 🥰
That is such a relatable story! It is a roller coaster of emotion. ❤️
That dog is GORGEOUS 😍 sending a lot of love.
I love the dog too!!
@@slowman328 I had to watch the video twice, the first time I was too distracted 🥰
Omg same! I’m staying away from hauls and unboxing!
So true. Planner peace is accepting what works for you.
Yes! I need to reevaluate sometimes to ask myself if I’m being inspired or influenced - big difference!
For 2025? Let's start where we are, let's use what we have, let's do what we can.❤
Doggo is the cutest and bestest boy ❤
I think this video is for anyone who does crafting or creating!
I laughed en entire time. Oh, the guilt of consumerism. 😂😂 EDIT: The amount of relatedness I feel is incredible.
i understand where your coming from.
You definitely win at the Happy Planner/washi tape/sticky note game, BUT "My name is Krys and I am a planner addict."
I started using a bullet journal in September 2015 and haven't wavered.
Hobonichi has always fascinated me. But I figure for the cost I could buy 4 Stalogy notebooks and have managed to resist.
TFS! ❤
Your assistant is so helpful bringing you his favorite balls lol 😂
I’m so happy you posted this, thank you!!
The thumbnail and the topic matter kept bothering me, so I knew it was for me 😁
Not from the planner community, but I love stationary.
Wow, the algorithm really decided to hurt my feelings this morning 😂. Lovely to have found you, I laughed out loud within the first 30 seconds. 😂❤😂
Support group sounds good. I'm an ink penaholic and I haven't purchased any this year....yet. 🤞🏻
Thank you for this comment. I need to do the same. All kinds of handlettering supplies and books I have not used yet. ❤ I appreciate you.
This is the best planner video I’ve seen in a long time.
I have maybe 300 sticker sheets. I used to horde them but now I make sticker collages by giving myself a sticker every time I check off a task
I love this idea!
Yeah… glad you made this video because the consumerism is out of control. 2025 is the year for no planner supplies ring bought. I have wayyyyyy too much stuff! This year I’m using what I have!
I am SO GLAD someone is talking about this!!!! We are one and the same I feel. This made me feel I wasn't alone in my obsession.
Fighting consumerism is hard, but you can do it. I am battling it through makeup and watercolors
I love this idea! ❤️
OOOH! I could do an entire video about the trap of "free shipping."
Also, I am right there with you on the paper pads. My mom is a scrapbooker, and I will use scraps of those beautiful papers to decorate my planner pages, but not nearly enough to justify the amount of them we collectively share.
I felt this in my soul 😂
Also, I have found that hoarding your supplies means that a lot of the stickers and washi will lose their stickiness over time.
