This is so true for electric guitarists as well. I wear headphones like 80% of the time to not keep up my roommates. I’m playing some sick solo to a backing track, tapping out harmonics, etc. They just hear me sucking HARD at the acoustic.
When I play Eruption through headphones it sounds incredible with all the reverb and flange but to others around me it looks like I'm just playing air guitar.

My Korg M1 sounds the same. My pedal organ too. The mechanics that is. 😁 The Yamaha CS1x is a bit more quiet, but I think the DX7 is the most silent of the once I’ve got. Headphones have crippled me in a way. When I wear headphones, I'm in my zone, so now I'm training myself to play just as well without them at full volume so I don't get as nervous on stage because beta-blockers don't do anything when I use them. This is for guitar and piano. I haven't played drums live, but I tend to play them on with headphones too. If I had an EWI I would probably play those with headphones too and electric violins are still loud imo.
YES!! I always wondered what it sounded like from the outside!! I like the privacy of figuring out a song, or practicing a piece that needs a lot of annoying repetition... I don't want to disturb others that want to watch TV or listen to their own music. When I was practicing scales I turn the sound all the way down... Those scales interrupt my thoughts...
I had a roommate who was a pianist and I legitimately got so tired of the chair squeak I asked them to please just let me hear the music instead. Probably helps that piano always puts me to sleep, and i mean that in a good way. Infinitely comfy vibes.

Exactly!! My partner has a very similar piano and, early am and late pm, this is what I hear! Sometimes I try to guess the piece by the rhythm of the thump thumps. As we live in an apartment complex, her playing is not muted for me. But, we have some neighbors who have no musical taste!! Great playing!!

He positions his hands then give a quick down and forward motion with his whole arme then immediately releases when holding the sustain pedal down woth his foot. This is the proper technique, but might be hard to catch of you're unfamiliar with piano.
