In Ancient times the most of this region was called Paeonia. It was a hellenic kingdom with Greek language with long history. It even took part in the Trojan Wars with the Trojans . Their history stops when Alexander the Great conquers them and then they became part of the Roman Empire. In Byzantine times their today's capital Skopje was built and it was named Scupi.
