I was there that day my mom and uncle worked for Lockhart labs in the west bottoms I was 4 yrs old and don't remember much except for seeing my mom standing on the viaduct looking at the flooding when my grandparents went down to pick them up! For years growing up I would go to visit my dad there and see the high water marks on the buildings. Dad was in the Navy off the coast of Korea at the time and mom took a job at Lockharts in dads place! Dr Lockhart was one fine man!!

Interesting stuff. My dad grew up in KCMO, near Southwest Blvd, between Penn Valley Park and the West Bottoms. He was 6 when this flood happened and he has talked about it often. I remember him telling me of the stench and sight of dead, bloated livestock floating and gathered in one spot near his home. He said there was a large pig processing plant that was a bit outside the West Bottoms proper toward his home that had dead pigs floating everywhere.

0:10 is that the bike trail underI-70 going to Kansas it’s changed a lot since 1951 but it’s still a bit recognizable though
