  • In the 1960s, when the original Batman series was broadcast in the US, ABC received tens of thousands of letters addressed to the Caped Crusader - most, but not all, written by kids.
At this year's Letters Live show at Wilderness Festival, Oxfordshire, UK, Claire Foy, Louise Brealey, Emma Corrin, and Noma Dumezweni joined us to read just a few of these brilliant letters.

I met Adam West on a flight many years ago - post appearance on The Simpsons so he was having another career “moment.” I was terrified to approach him but when I did, he was incredibly gracious and kind. A favorite memory forever!

I guess many of us could have written the second letter to our favourite artist. Those letters and readings enlight what unites us, our humanity.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor and Diana Frances Spencer on the same stage. And wow, Claire would nail a good Harley Quinn. 😂

Dear Letters Live. I am 46 years old. It would really help me out sometime if you would end a video by saying "Isolde - it's time to brush your teeth and go to bed". A fan, Isolde, Co. Leitrim

Claire Foy's accent was New York City, Louise Brealy sounded more like someone from Buffalo.

I agree, though to be fair, I assume that perhaps it was easier for Claire to sound like she was from NYC than from Buffalo.

FYI from across the pond - people in Buffalo, NY don't have New York City accents. Unless they moved 400 miles from NYC to Buffalo.

Any letters out there to Wonder Woman (1941) and Batwoman (Kathy Kane first appeared in 1956) they are DC Comic heroes too….they would be just as interesting to hear from a different perspective what kid’s thought about them if any exist…I’ve been a fan of DC canon since I was born in the early 50s.

These letters are just adorable! Those kids are now fully grown adults with kids (and perhaps grandkids) of their own, wonder how the people featured here would react when they realized that a bunch of famous British actresses would be reading their letters 60 plus years later after stumbling upon it across the internet…
But on the other hand, why on earth didn’t they have Claire read the letter from the kid in Buffalo in her normal accent? Honestly, it would have taken a great deal off of her.

Sorry but Buffalo is not in Brooklyn. What was that accent?!

In all fairness, perhaps they assumed that they would have NYC accents, which is easier for a British person to do.
Why don’t they read it in their normal accents? The late great Barry Humphries himself read a letter from John Cheever (an American writer) in his native Aussie accent, though he admitted that he couldn’t really do accents, so he didn’t really bother doing so.

@@flannerymonaghan-morris4825 in all fairness, and as a native New Yorker myself, hardly anyone talks like that these days.
