    I remember a low budget filmmaker telling me one time “ it’s not once in the room that matters, it’s what in the frame that matters”, and this video encompassed that phrase.

    Your first shot that looked like "stock footage" honestly looked more realistic to a hospital, but the final product looks more of a stylized and dramatic feel, which feels better tbh

    5:47 I'm a nurse. If I walk into a room and all that's in the room are XL gloves, I'll still use them unless I know I'm doing something that needs better fit gloves. And yes, this happens sometimes, though I'm more likely to go into a room with only S gloves. Even then, I'll still use them, rather than wasting time going and finding M or L gloves that fit me better.

  • @RaphPatch
    @RaphPatch Месяц назад +1

    One critical thing Josh didn't mention in the video is how much shooting on a long lens with a shallow DOF enables this kind of low-budget set. Carefully framing out the background with composition, and obscuring it in the out-of-focus nether regions, lets you get away with a lot that wouldn't otherwise work... Like rug walls!
    But seriously, it's a valuable lesson: smart use of your camera alone is a powerful tool to compensate for DIY production design. Keeping more of the frame out-of-focus lets the audience's imagination fill in the gaps.

    I just did this this weekend. I did more of an in-home hospice. Dollar store balloons for decoration. Some sort of big clock thing with beige bevels and a similar overlay in post plus some wire loom and a coiled cell phone charger cable duct taped to the back seems to have sold the effect. Now that I see this, I wish I would have used an old flat TV I have lying around but I think for at home, the small and portable monitor worked. Yep, it's all about creating the illusion.

    This is similar to they way I built a little girls room for my short film Molly. We used the the foyer in my house because the bed rooms were too small to shoot in., We blew up and air mattress and put sheets over it. We used one of the end tables as her night stand and placed a few toys and trinkets on it. And because it was a young teen's room, we plastered the wall above her bed with posters and teen magazine photos we got at Walmart. This gave the illusion of it being a kid's bedroom.

    I think this is a great video to help someone understand the genuine article isn't always required. I feel this would make more impact if you started from scratch (minus camera and lens as this should be something people already have) and give yourself a fixed budget. This would be a lot more laborious to execute, but I believe it would drive the point home and help deliver more creative ideas.

    This actually reminds me of the behind the scenes for the movie Suicide Kings (1997). Though there are some interiors that were necessary (such as a strip club, a restaurant), the production used one of the rooms of a mansion they were going to be mostly filming at already for an apartment instead of having to find one, for one scene involving two characters. They had to paint the room a different color, but no one would have guessed it was a room at the same location they were filming most of the film at.
    It also reminds me of the recent video documentary I saw on RUclips called "Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location," where the location of The Overlook Hotel's kitchen set turned out to be a part of the offices for the studio where the film was being made that they simply dressed with minimal alterations.
