Glintshore was really brutal in the campaign. I really like Ripley as a villain, she's pretty simple as a concept (basically just Percy but evil) but the fact that she uses her genius for what should be a noble cause, putting power in the hands of the people, make it extra tragic. Percy has matured enough to know how dangerous his invention is, Ripley never bothered to think twice.
The dark mirror narrative of the two characters is more beautifully complex than that. Anna’s original goal was the more noble, she wanted to give power to the powerless, Percy only wanted power for himself to seek revenge. Both were left alone in the world by the tragedies that set them on their mutual path, and both were ultimately shaped by the people who found them. Percy eventually found Vox Machina, and in the end they saved him and made him a better man. For Ripley it was eventually the Briarwoods, who have no interest in making anyone a better person.

So, without explicit spoilers: D&D as a game, past a certain level, allows characters to be revived from death and resurrected relatively easily via spells that are readily available to Clerics (like Pike) or Druids (like Keyleth). _But_ Matt Mercer, when he's running the game, tends to add a few extra layers of complexity and challenge to those resurrection spells to add extra weight and narrative to potential death or resurrection. The whole thing about Vax becoming the champion of the Raven Queen (renamed the Matron of Ravens in the show for copyright reasons) after Vex died was something that emerged from the gameplay, rather than something planned or scripted. In the campaign, there are numerous deaths. More than the show has depicted, I believe. For example, when Grog got rid of Craven's Edge in the campaign, he did actually die (and was revived relatively quickly) in the campaign version. In short: while this is an adaptation of the campaign and not 100% a copy of those events, the big events came as much from dice rolls and improvisation as from any overall plan from Matt.
All correct. In past editions of D&D death was pretty brutal, it ate away at your constitution etc. in 5e it’s much more forgiving. But think a lot of DM’s like myself and Matt, have added in a small skill challenge to make it more impactful. And of course it’s ultimately up to the player. I had one of my characters die and choose for him to remain dead because coming back might mean he would turn into a monstrous abomination because of the cursed blade that killed him.
As someone on the spectrum, I truly appreciate Angela's reactions to this show. She feels SO MUCH and I've seen the og campaign plus autism so I don't feel nearly as much so having a north star of emotional health is incredibly valuable to me. Thank you for everything you do

Oof, I was putting off watching this reaction because I knew you were going to be as much of a wreck by the end as I was...then I finally clicked on the video and listened to your intro and just dreaded it even more! It's worth noting/remembering that Pike at the moment (in the series, at least, where they've made death a more serious condition than in the campaign) can only heal the wounded, not bring people back from the dead. Kash had to do the resurrection rite with her help to try and bring Vex back, and even then it was only once the Matron decided to take Vax up on his offer. Also, Orthax claims the soul of anyone killed by those guns, which is why it was glowing after Ripley shot him so even a ritual to resurrect his body wouldn't necessarily do any good without the ability to free his soul first.
The intro is just a chefs kiss. ikyky and i guess all viewers prewatch each episode before. Side note: The homage to calamity from CR is so nice. Will say that Sams performance is 100% in all things he does. The quiver in the end is just so good
5:07 "I don`t know if it's _'till death do us part_ situation..." - dangerous words were said here!!!! 8:17 - good catch!!! Nobody noticed indeed. Your tears got me. Really. Thank you so very much. This is definitely how i felt after the original episode, and the cast cried too. Though they changed so many things in this episode, it`s like two absolutely different stories. I don`t think Ripley`s backstory is here to make us pity her and forgive her crimes. I think this is here to say "this girl had so many roads before her yet she chose THIS ONE"
21:33 I assure you, I have watched the campaign all the way through, including every bit of extra lore, and things are different in LOVM, so I do not know.
Yeah... I knew there was going to be some ugly crying before this episode was done. My college child had come home for the weekend yesterday, so we had a season 3 marathon before dinner. She's really into D&D and might have been featured on some news stations during 2020 for organizing online games during the plague year. She knew, but I had no idea, and Percy is a favorite of mine, but I'm a fan of tortured nerds myself
I watched the campaigns and totally forgot about this ending happening. This hit me hard though. I do love to see Percys journey from No Mercy Percy in season one to showing mercy here.
i have to believe that Ripley's gun has something to do with how we could get Percy back. The gun glowed when he died. HES FINE, WE'LL REVIVE HIM SOMEHOWWW
The gun glowed as Percy's soul went to orthax. This storyline is different from the campaign, but my guess is that vox machina will go back to hell to kill orthax and save Percy's soul, after dealing with the dragons.
I don't remember this happening in the livestream, and while I'm not complaining, I've definitely been in shock since seeing this string of episodes. We're *all* in the same boat right now and I'm really looking forward to the rest of this season.
It makes me wonder when Sam started feeling the discomfort in his throat and when they record the music as apposed to when they record the dialogue. I know the dialogue was over two years ago according to the cast which seems to before he was having issues but if the music isn’t done until later like the rest of the score . . . That might be why we got less Sam performances this season 😢. I’m so glad he’s in recovery ❤
@@JRDickens20 The songs take a lot of time so they're made even before the episodes are scripted. I don't know for sure how that fits in with Sam's health, but I'd guess this season was mostly complete with any disruptions later or in M9.

the way they did this ending scene makes me super (morbidly) excited for camapign 2, theres a major character death in that one that's gonna hit like a freight train
Your reaction was so visceral. Hugs to you. Us OG critters can’t even tell you what happens. I do love the Percy/Clint Eastwood moment. And the fact that a majority of the audience is isn’t aware of it.
I did watch the campaign and I knew it was coming so every bullet shot I was like oh god is this the one? but I was not prepared for the how hard this went, I was still tearing up 2 days later
What I love(d) about Percy is that he puts 110% in every situation even though he is just a smart human. "I don't have my gun? deploy shock glove. that's not enough? I'll make a bomb. That doesn't work? I'll hit you with a pipe." He always felt as strong as the rest and most of them have magic!
"I feel like the people who watched the campaign know and were waiting for it", this felt like the Red Wedding effect, you'd think that knowing it's coming makes it somewhat easier, but for some reason it hits even harder. Fantastic episode
I guess I have a lot to say about this episode. When Percy spared Ripley and reached out his hand and she pulled out a tiny gun and shot him chef's kiss perfect dress perfect.
Matt talks over with the players when one dies if they feel they have more they want to explore with the character, or if they're ok grieving the loss of a character and movingon to a new one (this wonn't be the last time you will experience death of a maain character in CR campaigns... this broke my HEART to see)
Although Percy dies in a similar way in the original story, I just can’t see them killing him off indefinitely. He’s one of the most beloved characters in the show and as we know in DnD characters come back from the dead all the time. Plus there’s plenty of hints to show that he’ll be brought back. The gun glows after he’s shot suggesting Orthax has possession of his soul meaning Vox Machina will have to either fight Orthax or make a deal with him to get his soul back. They revived Vex so they’ll likely do the same with Percy. His body has gotta be decayed some by now tho, I really don’t want zombie Percy lmao. Maybe Pike can heal his body once his soul is returned.
When I first watched this episode of the campaign it was made all the more poignant by what was going on in my day-to-day life. My Dad had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was receiving palliative care. I'd watch episodes of Critical Role in the evenings before going to sleep, so I saw Percy's death and then went to sleep. The next morning my Dad passed away. I remember being a little freaked out by the coincidence of it. This episode of the show absolutely captured the emotional impact of the moment.
Soon as this episode aired I knew you were gonna be devastated. I was mentally prepared as I knew it was coming. Little different but I expected they were setting it all up.
I don't really mind that the show isn't following the live stream very closely. I mean, I LOVED when it did, but now I'm getting the chance to see new VM content! And if I want 1:1, the stream is still there for me any time I want it.
It would be impossible for the show to follow the streams 1:1. Not only because of the time, a season of the show being the length of 1 or 2 stream episodes. But also because the format is not the same. In streams, you know it's a game and that everything is dictated by game mechanics. This does not translate in the show. Same for every out if character moments in the streams that make them enjoyeable to watch. So if the show tried to be a 1:1 of the streams, it would fail to reach the same level and would sacrifice a more cinematic experience. Meaning both new fans and stream fans would be turned away
Everytime Angela says how much she loves a brooding nerd in glasses, I (a brooding nerd in glasses) jokingly curse being on the other side of the globe.

Welcome to D&D. No one wears plot armour.
"I need to know more about these people." Don't worry, you will in the next animated series
As someone on the spectrum, I truly appreciate Angela's reactions to this show. She feels SO MUCH and I've seen the og campaign plus autism so I don't feel nearly as much so having a north star of emotional health is incredibly valuable to me. Thank you for everything you do
Sending out big hugs, tears and support lil funny girl we all went through it with the campaign. We are here for support. After the season is over would love to see your reactions to the from table to screen comparisons. Again big hugs
That "but he was gone..." really emphasizes his death, the timing was perfect, they really know how to pull on the old heart strings
What a roller-coaster watching you see this episode. 👐
It's very clear that you love these characters.
Soul crushing watch... so same time next week?
lol fantastic reaction! I had a feeling it was coming and I still wasn't prepared
Wow…the copium actually worked this time 🤣
I cried... so much. It caught me so much by surprise, and it hit me right in the feels...
I don't remember this happening in the livestream, and while I'm not complaining, I've definitely been in shock since seeing this string of episodes.
We're *all* in the same boat right now and I'm really looking forward to the rest of this season.
Had a friend point out something about this episode: one of the voices for the Assembly was Mark Strong whose character is named.
Oh, btws, the song was written (and performed?) by Sam's (Scanlan) brother-in-law.
Performed by Matt Mercer himself actually
@@Trichromanic Was it? I thought so too, with some distortion put on top of his voice. But I'm not 100% sure.
@@Quotenwagnerianer Yea they confirmed it on twitter
@@JRDickens20 The songs take a lot of time so they're made even before the episodes are scripted. I don't know for sure how that fits in with Sam's health, but I'd guess this season was mostly complete with any disruptions later or in M9.
I loved your reaction. I was squealing at all the scenes with vex and I was fucking sobbing at the end.
Percy looked so sad when she shot him. So betrayed. He really believed in this and she killed the only person in the world that might actually give a damn about her
I honestly fought hard to watch this episode and the other two. But knowing you were going to watch it and how much I love your reactions....plus how much this and the next two would hit you...I had to steal thy own nerves and emotions to watch. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to watch your reactions and share in your emotions.
Thank you so much for everything you do and bring to this world darlin.
Oh man. I remember being in the studio the night we lost Percy in game. Everyone in the crew and the whole building was dead quiet when it happened as we watched. All pretty much had the same reaction as Angela.
I just finished episode 9. What a season
Great reaction, and don't worry I'm crying with you on that final scene (again) 😭
Shout out to our great Dungeon Master Matt Mercer for gracing our ears with that tragic song
the way they did this ending scene makes me super (morbidly) excited for camapign 2, theres a major character death in that one that's gonna hit like a freight train
There are many reactors reacting to this show. I chose you because I think you're the best 💓
The minute they said "Glintshore", I knew where we were going. Still hits hard.
I threw my soda can at my TV when Percy was killed off in this episode, and worst of all, Ripley got away!
I knew it was coming but it still hit me hard. Music gets me.
I guess I have a lot to say about this episode. When Percy spared Ripley and reached out his hand and she pulled out a tiny gun and shot him chef's kiss perfect dress perfect.
Hold my calls, we need to be sad today
"how are they flying" the same way anything else is possible in this world, magic! lmfao
Matt talks over with the players when one dies if they feel they have more they want to explore with the character, or if they're ok grieving the loss of a character and movingon to a new one (this wonn't be the last time you will experience death of a maain character in CR campaigns... this broke my HEART to see)
23:55 "and I hope we *never* know" I CACKLED 🤣😭
in dnd where this originates from there are ways to bring people from the dead so i have not a single doubt they will do everything to revive him
I saw just rewatched the three most recent episodes and I still was in denial about this.
11:25 I was _so expecting_ Grog’s yell to attract an army of predators like that scene in _The Emperor’s New Groove._
Dunno if it’s intentional or not, but the fan blowing your hair ever so softly… peak dramatic effect 👌
Don't worry, you'll get to know more about the Cerberus Assembly in the Mighty Nein show.
Fun fact this episode in the campaign they also fought their number one fan
No mercy Percy, becoming mercy Percy was so heartwarming and heartbreaking
The "Assembly" are campaign 2 people.
A shock, for sure.
This is different from the original campaign.
Percy did die tho.
I did watch the campaign, and yes I still cried. Actually, I cried more watching your reaction because I know how much you love Percy.
I really like the villain backstories.
Hurt people hurt people, is the best reason for BBEGs to be villains.
Yep, knew this would be a rough one for our funnylilgal.
Ángela: im wondering if this is a “til death do we part” situation between Vex and Percy?
Ripley: Hold my beer.
Everytime Angela says how much she loves a brooding nerd in glasses, I (a brooding nerd in glasses) jokingly curse being on the other side of the globe.
Ohhh no... Focuses on how happy Percy is.... she's not ready
That intro about Percy being happy...
those who watched the campaign do not know, they may have an idea but the story changes a little more with each episode and has changed a lot more so far this series.
Yeah, i was honestly shocked after this episode and 8,9 when what I thought would happen didn't end up happening.
The wizards from the opening will be explained in detail when you watch the Mighty Nein animated series that should be coming out sometime this year or next.
