“create more and consume less” That’s better than what i thought of lol! My Yule oath is to read more books and study more of the things that interest me. I asked for some really cool books for the holidays that my family is going to get for me tomorrow so i’m excited to start honoring that oath immediately!
My Jol oath is to not give up on this life, though Ive felt like giving up a few times this last half of the year. I appreciate what you put forth,JC. Skol!!
'Hage' in Danish, 'haka' in Swedish is chin, but it is also a 'spit/peninsula' in the landscape, and (metaphorically) 'obstacle'. As a sailor, I have many times been beating upwind to round land and landgrounds named 'Something-hage'. So, when it is not a part of someone's lower forehead, it implies something like 'turning point', 'hinge'. So when the word 'hage-nat' came onto the screen, it immediately mad sense to me. For what that is worth... - Useful is the outdated, but very comprehensive dictionary "Ordbog over det Danske Sprog" online (note the lovely plural -e endings of verbs that also our hymn book is full of 😊)
RUclipsr Abby Cox (mostly fashion history /clothing reconstructions, but also culture in general) has a video out this year about Christmas, and talks about how, in Charles Dickens's time, "Merry" was a word associated with drunkenness. So the Yule Ale may be the most enduring of holiday traditions... My oath of this year is to finally write a series of interlocking short stories.
I found "The Lunisolar Calendar of the Germanic Peoples" by Andreas E. Zautner (Translated by Johanna Klapper) a very interesting read. Best Wishes from the UK.
Having mid winter celebrations in late january - early february makes more sense than at winter solstice which is close to the beginning of the coldest period of the year.
I think that depends how far north you live, i.e. whether the absence of light makes more of a difference than the cold in terms of survival till spring.
Happy holidays!🌲 I avoid making oaths, but I do try hard to be a good person. I think that's an important trick I use because I don't have to worry about coming up short on my oaths but people are often impressed with my good actions when I can manage it because they know I haven't actually made an oath to act honorably.
My Solstice Oath is to reclaim my ancestral treasure from anyone who withholds it from me, be they fair or foul, friend or foe. I'm sure it won't end badly.
Her haaaiiiirrr!!! 😍😍😍😍 My Solstice Resolutions are getting through a year of school to then transfer to CA or NH, to have lots of cash in da bank 💵 💰, also to send out the good intentions to those needing breakthroughs of all kinds in the new year!! We need it!! Happy Yule! Merry Christmas! Wassail!!!
I can´t help thinking. hoku (chin) has a double meaning in modern Danish that I think goes back to viking times. The term is hage in Danish and I think that also has the meaning and (i think) root as hook in English. This would make hokunott into hooknight or night of the turn (-ing point). Winter solsitice night
The idea of midwinter being on the shortest day is actually interesting to think about. Certainly an astronomical phenomenon, but the coldest month or two are still ahead.
I love this one! To be honest with ourselves about what we need is so powerful. I highly recommend the audiobook (specifically the audio book) You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. She’s the grandma we all should have. ✨
It would seem to me that in a primitive culture, if you were throwing a party that people had to travel to get to, it would be the three nights of the full moon that would be the logical time. If you were traveling, it would give you a few more hours of light to reach a nearby destination; if you were partying, it would light the environs of your home.
Yule in the ancient language of the Cymru Britons is Ewell , which translates as glide , diminutive. So, the sun slowing to glide flat at it's most diminutive in the solar year. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
Could jul yol have anything to do with the indoeuropean and iranian tradition of "Jalda".? Which is the sjortest night when the evil spirits and dead are out roaming around`. It makes sense for my swedish ear - but does a go to o u as in jul. In Norweogan it is Jula. 'wishing You a God Jul
Since northern latitudes have earlier harvests than mid-latitudes, I'd expect Iceland to start Yule earlier than Gutþiuda (where fruma Jiuleis = Naubaimbair).
The idea of Hákon regulating religious practice through law is such a post-canon law idea… Does the author of Heimskringla back it up with any scaldic references? Or is it disconnected from the poetry like the rest of the narrative? And why do we have any references to Easter/Eastre in the Nordic material?
Þorri is the month between ca. mid January to ca. mid February in Iceland and is still celebrated in our country. Then people eat old traditional food. In solstice in December people in the Viking age drank öl, homebrewed terrible ale I am told.
I know Persian, and they call the winter solstice "Yalda" or "The Night of Yalda" since it is the longest night of the year. You have more knowledge of linguistics, so do you believe Jól/Yule and Yalda are somehow connected? Yalda is celebrated on the same time that the winter solstice is.
I read an historian who was into the theory that the winter feast was celebrated "the first new moon after the first full moon after the winter solstice" Would be ... 13th Jan full moon ... 29th January 2025. So see You then😂
I’m not sure if your familiar with the Aldsidu blog but the author makes a very convincing take on the traditional heathen calendar. Winter nights is the full moon just before Halloween, Jol on Jan 13th this year and then sigurblot starting on April 12. From the sources there isn’t anything that indicates the Germanic peoples celebrated solar events it all points to a lunar solar tradition. I would love to see evidence showing anything else.
I Norge setter vi stor pris på våre forfedre, men vi feirer jul etter relativt moderne tradisjoner...... ikke helt kristen.... ikke helt hedensk. God jul... Marry Christmas.. Marry-X-mas.
Dr. Crawford is out of his natural habitat and indoors.
wild crawfords tend to seek shelter inside, in the cold winter months
If you're cold, they're cold. Bring Crawfords inside. Love all Old Norse specialists.
A bit unnerving. 😉
He is not free range anymore?
and whispering too 🤭

Keep that oath. It gets better.
Life gets better. Said at age 62
We got gentle voice Jackson today
Might be his new inspiration was still asleep :)

You two are so adorable. I really like "create more, consume less" I might poach it 😊
Please do! Sharing is caring! ✨
Gleðilig jól, Jackson og Lauren.
At drekka jól is a phrase still used somewhat in the Faroe Islands.
The casual use of "vicissitudes" 🤩
God Jul, Jackson and Lauren. SKAL to both your oaths. ❤️🎄🐐 excited to check out the online resource and older Yule video.

Colder yes. But in a place with such little sunlight in winter, they were very aware and greatful the return of sunlight as well.
Yay Dr Crawford posted again! 🤠
Especially excellent rundown. thanks. Have a happy one!
Happy holidays!🌲

God Jul! Thanks very much for this, and wishes~
Hyvää joulua!
Happy Hanukkah to you. Thanks for the knowledge you share in your videos.

I was hoping for this video.
All the best to you and yours, Keep the Yule in Yuletide!
God jol to you JC!
Good yule from Denmark Jackson!
Dr Crawford is a smooth one! 😂🥰😁
From my readings, the "specific" amount man must drink during yule, is 4 gallons

Hell yeah, a new Doc C upload!
This was really great - thankyou
🎄God Jul interesting as allways.
If you sweat an oath oh Jól not to swear any oaths, have you broken your oath?
Rather like when I swore an oath not to be an oaf.
The idea of midwinter being on the shortest day is actually interesting to think about. Certainly an astronomical phenomenon, but the coldest month or two are still ahead.
Cute and genuine ending ❤😊
Have a good one
I've honestly not thought too much ahead. My mental health has not been great so far this year. I would love to be mentally stronger that's for sure.
I love this one! To be honest with ourselves about what we need is so powerful. I highly recommend the audiobook (specifically the audio book) You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. She’s the grandma we all should have. ✨
My oath is actually going to school for sociolinguistics, because I can't find an answer to the question that my brain won't stop asking

I can't find the Danish article you're referring to. Is it Sofie or Sophie? Bunding? Neither gives any results on google. :(
My solitice promise is to create more, preferably with stone, and read more, learn more about everything.
Gleðieg jól!
I still struggle to deal with cute Crawford ❤
Azzadorable!
Glædelig jul
Anyone know of any good sources to investigate non-patrilineal Norwegian surnames?
I 100% thought you we're going to vow to "marry this woman"… God jul from Sweden!
Since northern latitudes have earlier harvests than mid-latitudes, I'd expect Iceland to start Yule earlier than Gutþiuda (where fruma Jiuleis = Naubaimbair).
Link of the older video?

Don’t you need to put your hand on a boar during this oath to make it binding?
My solstice oath is to be creative again.
Love this! Check out the book The Artist Way - it has you take yourself on art dates to get inspiration by yourself. Worked for me!
Gleðileg jól
Gleðileg jól ✝️❤

Full moon is 13 Jan 2025
I suspect the winter celebration was observed at different times and in different ways by groups in divergent locations.
God Jul!
