ZPF, Earthion and Irena Metal Fury. What a time to be a shmup fan!
Yeah! And I still don't know which one is going to be the best.... So far, I like ZPF technically, and Earthion seems to have the best gameplay. We'll see...
I can't wait to have all three.
And Mega R-Type too!
And Mega R-Type too!
The distinct Mega Drive graphics and sound signature make things all the more exciting! Although some of the backgrounds and/or bullet colors should be worked out in order to improve visibility. Also it'd be a shame if the game is too easy.
By the way not sure about what you implied but the Mega Drive _did_ get tons of games with excellent color use back then, including among shmups e.g. Thunder Force III and IV, Hellfire, Aero Blasters, Gaiares, Gley Lancer, Musha Aleste, Super Fantasy Zone, Panorama Cotton and so on...
For sure there were plenty of great looking games. But there were plenty that did not get the best out of the console.
it looks gorgeous!
Yes it does.
It's unbelievable how good it looks, sounds and plays!!! It's a dream come true
It's shaping up to be a great game. I wonder if there will be any secrets in it.
Amazing!!! The Mega Drive lives on!!!
It's such a great console.
That paralax just keeps going and going.
Kinda reminds me of Jim Powers in the lost dimension.
That's very true. Although the parallax annoys me as it scrolls in the wrong direction to cater for the 3D classes.
I think i have seen Mike never been so excited about a new game like this before AND I 100% agree!! I need this game! ABSOLUTELY!! Also i like the easy difficulty setting as im crappy at shooters
Same here, I love the idea of Shmups but I am terrible at them.
I cant wait to get this game. I’m totally blown away but the level of care and detail on display here. Wow
It’s so impressive, ZPF almost looks like a Neo Geo game.
I always think of the MD/Genesis as the little brother to the Neo Geo.
This looks unbelievable
It looks amazing. The art style won't be for everyone but I love it.
That is one awesome game over screen!
That character is really cool.
Can't wait for the kickstarter to go live, backing this game without doubt! What an awesome console the Megadrive is, it just keeps on giving...
Same here!
I’m so happy!!!!
Me too
Having seen it in action, seems very much like a magpie approach, taking bits and pieces from classic shooters
Lords of Thunder is definitely in there, especially that like Centurion ship and the gold-plated menus and HUDs
Channeling bio-mechanic enemy designs from games like Gynoug and Zero Wing
Screen-filling multi-segmented bosses straight out of Thunder Force 3/4 or even Gunstar Heroes/Contra Hard Corps
The day-glo color palette actually reminds me of the look of Knuckles Chaotix more than anything
Not only Lord's of Thunder but Thunder Force IV is in there as well! Did you pay attention to the green shots his first ship had? It has a striking resemblance to the Blade weapon in Thunder Force IV but instead of being yellow it's green. Very cool...
@@Sinn0100 I think the tic-tac shaped rotating bullets are ripped or copied very close from Grindstormer/VV Megadrive (originally Arcade) shoot em up
@@edy1361
Aaah...maybe. They really look like a green Blade weapon. The pattern is ever so slightly different but man does it look like it.
@@Sinn0100 I'm not sure if you know what ones i mean, youtube 'grindstormer megadrive' and they are redish coloured tic-tac shaped ones, rotating. Very similar to some of the enemy bullets in this game.
That's most games though, every game draws influence from those that come before.
This looks mental. I'd say its possibly one of the Mega Drive's most gorgeous looking and sounding games
It's quite spectacular in its chaos.
Looks amazing Mike, this looks and sounds better than my personal fave thunderforce 3 😮, can’t wait to see the full version, great review, cheers Jonathan 👍👍👍
I can't wait to play the full game Jonathan.
I can't wait to order this one!
I've been burnt out on shmups, got way too many of those on the Dreamcast, but this one looks particularly nice :)
Try Life on Earth, action platformer/ run and gun.
@@RetroGamerBoy I pre-ordered the minute I hit your video, way back when. In fact you are responsible for 95% of my gaming orders and pre-orders! XD
Yeah I mostly focus on the ol' Sega Mega Drive these days..
This game looks amazing
Stunning, I cannot wait to get the full game.
Morning Mike. Great video mate. This game looks absolutely superb. I'm sure you're probably more than well aware but just this week, I heard about mega r type. Apparently the demo is going to be available fairly soon and it looks very good 👍
Yup I've been following it closely.
Impressive!
It is.
Yes I’ve been waiting for any ZPF news and it’s great to finally get some thing and it’s looking really good plus the music , sound fx is great I can’t wait for the Kickstarter I’m definitely backing this for box cartridge for my MD/GEN collection thanks for sharing Mike 👍
No problem
Another indy AAA for the Mega Drive. Couldn't be happier!
It's great, I really want to back the top tier, so I'm hoping it's not too expensive 🫰
I'm super jealous. This is like the Paprium of shoot em ups.
😅 yes it is.
Yeah except people will actually own it!
Great, thanks!!
No problem.
Thanks Mike for another awesome treat! We have been waiting for ZPF since the Covid days and it did not disappoint. Definitely going to play this on my Nomad. :)
Same here, its a very cool shooter.
I didn't watch much of your playthrough because I don't want to see to many spoilers! But I'm relieved to hear this isn't one of the more impossible shmups 😅 Thanks for the update!!
It makes a change from people not watching much because my videos are terrible 🤣
The game is live on Kickstarter and is at 800% funded at 120k in just two days. Heck of a showing.
Thanx for the demo Mike! 👍
I was worried for the difficulty of the game but it seems to be ok and definitely not as easy as it seemed in your gameplay.
I found the bombs to be overpowered but again in the options you can mess around with the number of them.
The gameplay is for sure in parts distracting with all the vivid colors and the background layers and also with that collecting coin system that you can confuse for enemy bullets.
Will see in the final product but, for some inexplicable reason 🤔of course i may be wrong, i do not believe that we will get any time soon.
I'm hearing rumblings that the Kickstarter could be soonish.
from looking at this I think Earthion will be a much more polished game, this looks like they have gone style over substance.
Totally agreed. Also looks very distracting for a shooter with all this background layers and stuff but again i have not played it yet to be sure.
@@proximacentauri8256 yeah I also don't like how the backgrounds keep changing for no apparent reason
I would not necessarily agree. Variety is the spice of life, and if all games were cut from the same cloth it would get boring quickly.
I love your collection and enthusiasm for it. Stay awesome.🤙🏽
Thanks 🤘😝🤘
I got This demo rhyme about three days ago I've heard about this game before too a couple years back. The first time I played this demo I realized this is a parallax scrolling monster of a shooter!
It's insane
Once you said you don't know what happened, they uploaded it
Interesting.
i hope they'll make for steam too
That would be cool
Got to play this demo too and I'm looking forward to the finished product.
Not really a fan of the art direction, though. The psychedelic, over the top color scheme is somewhat grating to my eyes, and it makes things hard to see/read sometimes. It _is_ technically very impressive, nonetheless.
I think it's going to be a stand out game. Some people will love it and others will hate it.
I'm still waiting for you to post where I can find the demo 👍🏾 please 👀
It's in the description 🤘
BTW Have you played "Pier Solar"? It's a genesis rpg homebrew game and it was released back in 2010 13 Years later
I'm still waiting for my copy from Watermelon. I bought it in their last Kickstarter.
@@RetroGamerBoy Hope you're gonna make a video about it, Its really a good game
Well I'm still waiting my top 1 favorite shmup will be released on my fav 16bit console
Is it this?
Hopefully the difficulty in final release can be cranked up because the demo to me seems to be a bit on the easy side.
Like I said from the demo it looks like hardcore shoot'em up fans maybe disappointed.
🤩🤩🤩
I can’t wait for the Kickstarter !!!
🤘😝🤘
So cool!!
🤘😝🤘
The colors and backgrounds are over the top. It's too hard to see some bullets and enemies.
Feels more like a tech demo, with some generic gameplay. Typical of a lot of modern indie shmups.
Just compare to something like Thunder Force IV, which has BOTH great graphics and well polished gameplay.
I'll wait for Earthion instead.
There is nothing wrong with being different. Games are subjective though, some people will appreciate the abstract nature of the game, while others will want a more conservative execution.
Looks really good. Will support it as soon the Kickstarter begins.
Snap!
How do you get this demo to run? I downloaded it and its a .bin file. I have to play this game! :)
Aaaaand im an idiot. I just loaded it into a flash cart and it works….never mind!
😁👍
Anybody know where to find the demo?
I'll put it in the description.
Hopefully there are roms available for ZPF Earthion Irena Metal Fury and Mega R-Type one day
For Mega R-Type there is.
@@RetroGamerBoy I know and Irena Metal Fury but they are both demos that'll definitely do for now talk about awesome 😍
Looks really nice !
Looks great 👍
incredible use of color specially for the console, art style and game genre don't really suit my taste but I'm sure many Genesis/MD fans will enjoy it
That's the beautiful thing about games. Not every game is for everyone but there is a game for everyone.
@@RetroGamerBoy Specially these days, the variety is astounding. Not even fans of original hardware are left out, admittedly there's less variety there but I still think the amount of support for classic systems in terms of games etc is a bit of a miracle.
They should put off the launch for another 10 years and switch to the MEGA CD / SEGA CD. They could have hardware sprite scaling (yes I know they are called 'stamps' on SEGA CD) where you can dodge into background or foreground.
That would be very cool.
I think my mind would of been blown away if this came out when I was a kid! Look at it! Eat that nintendont
It's stunning right.
It looks an absolute trip. The colours are a bit full on at times and theres a lot to take in. Regardless it is absolutely stunning and respect to the art team! The music sample you highlighted as well is outstanding! Cannot wait to play this. Love to all who keep the scene alive:)
It's crazy, I love it.
Zed! - "Canadian" Swedish person here.
🤘😝🤘
These videos are so good you should have a million subs. Great quality and editing.
😅 unfortunately the channel isn't growing at all. It's still fun to make these videos though.
@@RetroGamerBoy well I like your channel
Loving your excitement for the game
It won't be for everyone, but I love it.
"Stuck" in his room playing, as if Mike would want to be anyplace else.
Wow, that is a LOT going on; it's gorgeous, but whew, maybe a bit too much to follow the screen action at times. Maybe that's by design?
The colors though, as you work through stages, wow, it's really, really impressive. Awesome, it really DOES have that SoR style of sound--love it!
Once you're playing it works really well. Just looking at the footage can be disorientating.
The game looks spectacular very colourful and well put together so far!👍👍
Yup, I love this art style.
Any word on when the kickstarter will be available to back ?
Not yet. I would say it should be soon, but we have said that before.
It seems ZPF borrows from a lot of games. The intro screen and shop looks a lot like Forgotten Worlds and Lords of Thunder. The first boss has has could have been from Gaiares. The gold player ship looks a lot like the one from Over Horizon (NES) and that Neo-Geo game with a yellow ship, Andro Dunos I believe. Lots of really old school inspiration. Which kind of makes the neon hotdog bullet hell style enemy bullets a weird choice. Other than that it looks great!
Variety is the spice of life. I don't think this will be for everyone. But quite a few will love this game.
Hope we get to try the demo out
It's in the description of the video of you want to try it out.
nice
Grafix look really good but as far as challenging it looks more on the easy side. Definitely needs more bullets coming at you.
The Mega Drive and Genesis shooters were less bullet hells so I guess it a more authentic experience. Let's see what the do with the final release.
Played this on rom a few days back, Solid Demo, can't wait for the game.
where can you download demo rom?
It's in the description of the video
I think this is going to be a solid release for the MD.
@@RetroGamerBoy I've already found it. I'm impressed by colors, but gameplay is nothing special. Kind of like Paprium, it looks fantastic but the gameplay is unfortunately average or even below that
It looks amazing
It's insane.
What’s the CRT?
an old TV.
Cathode-ray tube
Lol, thanks@@RetroGamerBoy but I meant what's "the" CRT not what is "a" CRT.
@@danhackley3417 😂😂 I should learn to read. It's a Bush. It's a good spec but not as good as my Sony Trinitron that I sold back in 2006 for £50😭
First, finally got a first, super excited for ZPF. 👀
😅👍 OO
How many megabits this game have
It's a 4mb demo so I think that's a 32 megabits
It really looks amazing and runs pretty smooth too, colours look insane, almost psychedelic in places, I love it. What you said about paying a lot for something you can't enjoy is only partially true though: if you have to cough up that much, it needs at least a hard or maniac mode for us veteran players. I can't even count the games I bought & couldn't enjoy because they were too easy...I remember backing The Ghost Blade for the Dreamcast bitd: Collectors Edition was over 100 euros I believe. It arrived, 1cced it on my 2nd or 3rd try and it had no difficulty settings...I hope they add at least a hard mode in this game.
This talks to the fun bit. Getting difficultly curve and breadth of content correct is vital.
Was looking to see if an updated final fight demo was out, then remembered this game. Checked the site and the demo was their luckily. Booted it up and wasn't a fan... At first. After playing a few levels and tweaking the upgrades, absolutely love it now. Can't wait for the final version
where can you download demo rom?
Not every game is for everyone, but there will always be a game for everyone.
This looks awesome! Seems like they really fancy a neon color palette though.
😅yup. There are so many dull coloured games on the console, I'm happy to have an insanely colourful one.
No download link for demo?
I could share it, but as the demo was not strictly released by the Dev team, and I was sent it so I'm a little wary about sharing it. But if enough people want it I can 👍
@@RetroGamerBoy if the devs give explicit permission then yes please share if not we can wait 😊
Is ZPF for MegaDrive/Genesis or for SegaCD? Only I saw somewhere that it was for the CD addon, but it looks like you are referring to a cartridge.
It is Mega Drive and Genesis.
OMG, The gameplay and graphic of ZPF Shmup mega drive game is awesome and amazing! 😁😍👍👍
I love what they have done with it.
Wow! ZPF looks truly amazing. Very much like the Lords of Thunder influence but probably better! I've been anxiously awaiting this game for years and, like you, started to lose some hope it would be completed. But now it's finally here and we get to enjoy it! Yay!
Question for you Mike. I'm a huge fan of Antstream Arcade and I'm curious if you'd share some thoughts behind how publishers make their games available. I think it makes tons of sense for publishers to get their old games onto a new platform but for newly made retro style games like this (or Demons of Asteborg and Astebros are more good examples) financially, I have to imagine it makes more sense for the publishers to focus on selling their game (either cartridge or digital versions) for the most profit but I'd also guess there's a window and then they look to move into other areas. So for example, I know Metal Dragon is already on Antstream but Life on Mars is not (yet). I'm guessing Metal Dragon is older and Kai Software will sell more copies of Life on Mars when Life on Earth is released but maybe after that they'll also make Life on Mars available on Antstream. Is it something like that? Or is it just very different depending on the individual publishers that you're dealing with? I realize this may be an awkward question to answer but I'm curious and any information you're willing to share would be appreciated. Thanks Mike.
It's up to publisher's when and if they put their games on Antstream. The companies licencing team work closely with teams and only bring games to the platform when they are ready. For some that's when their physical sales are done, others don't see steaming as a threat to physical sales and will do simultaneous released. The life on earth game is actually the MSX version and not the MD version that is still in dev.
Awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
🤘😝🤘
Looks tremendous, but is the finished game going to have proper transitions between the sub-stages? The "lights off, wake up somewhere else" thing is weird.
I think that's how it's going to be in the final game. But I guess we won't know until we see the final game.
🔥
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Reminds me of r-type mixed with lords of thunder, but way more detailed. Looks fun.
A little Axelay too
I love this new indie scene🤘
If you turn the ships green shots into yellow it looks just like Thunder Force IV's Claw weapon. Also...nudity in the game was interesting. I hope RUclips doesn't cry about it because it's harmless. Here's the question...will it be on Antstream?
Addendum- I am loving the scaling I see on screen and I wonder what software they used to get it done? Is it a custom program or something they got from an old STI library? For reference- When he unlocks the three blue chests the emblem things scale.
I'm not sure, from what I've heard from the team they do have a lot of custom tech.
What I love about the music is that it has the energy of Streets of Rage, or Shinobi, or Gunstar Heroes, but it's an entirely unique soundtrack. It's a fresh take on the MD/Genesis audio and its incredible.
Totally agree.
Looking awesome! Cheers for sharing.
This is another title that is making me question only collecting the original release pal games...and not indy titles 😉
Mate the indie tile catalogue is huge now.
ZPF Oh Yeah
🤘😝🤘
Game looks incredible. Loved Tanzer so expectations are high
I still have not played Tanzer
No easy, normal or hard in the difficulty options? Thats odd.
I'm not sure that's odd, a lot of games just allow for extra lives and continues under difficulty. But I'm sure some players may prefer the convivence and structure of easy, medium, and hard.
@@RetroGamerBoy For sure i am one of them, it also seems effortless from the developers side speaking.
Can you please tell me where to find the demo rom👍🏾
I'll put a link in the description for it. Ill do it when I finish work
I can imagine a game like this on a good tube TV with an RGB input, or even on a 19-inch CRT monitor that has highly consistent luminance and chrominance values, which cannot be achieved using ordinary RCA inputs or even LCD monitors. The current Sega's 16-bit releases achieve not only a better use of color, but a greater use than the old average thanks to the use of much more generous ROMs, which were very limited in the past due to the commercial factor. In any case, it's good to see a system always breaking its limits, as well as showing new things to its consumers.
Yup, this demo is 32mbit game already. And it helps a ton.
i want it!
Me too.
I love horiz a lot, and this looks great. That said, I hope someone makes the first complete vertical bullet hell for Mega Drive.
That will give me a nervous breakdown.
@@RetroGamerBoy you know. As an 80s kid I started with Gradius, R-type and the like...and I was kinda scared of trying Cave bullet hell games because they seemed pretty daunting. When I finally played them, I realized most shots form patterns and ships don't generally aim point blank, also there are no stage hazards and your hitbox is pretty small. So it's sort of a trade-off. I like both kinds of shmups, but yeah, even though I'd love to see a BH on the Mega Drive, I think I prefer classical horiz like you.
Is this beauty getting a physical release?
It certainly is.
I’m not one for shoot ‘em ups either. But I do understand, many shoot ‘em up fans love the Genesis for its catalog of multiple classic shoot ‘em ups. This game does look top tier. Great video Mike and great work MegaCat
Shmaps scare me. But if they are not bullet hells I can have some fun with them.
When it will start the f#€##ing Kickstarter
I'm not sure. The demo was accidentally released.
Looks like it is turning out really nicely, pretty much as expected. I'm also glad that it is not a bullet hell type; that's not in the spirit of 16-bit era shooters and are better suited for arcade and the newer generation consoles. All of the classics; MUSHA, Thunder Force III/IV, Gate of Thunder/Lords of Thunder, Blazing Lazers, and countless others; none of them would have been for the better had they been done in a bullet-hell style, and that applies to this effort also. You are correct about the colors; they really pop similar to a side-scroller developed by Treasure.
Totally agree
Scrolling is choppy, is it because of 50fps in 60hz container on RUclips?
I hope so 😓
Possibly, it's super smooth when I play it.
@@RetroGamerBoy okay good to hear. You see it in the video as well, right? Frametime’s all over the place.
At least in your capture, it looks 30fps and doesn't look like a step forward in comparison to schmups from the 90's for the genesis. By your excitement, visually, I felt dissapointed.
It's running at 60fps. I'm not sure what you're seeing that makes it look 30fps.
Graphics look amazing, but i hope they improve the smoothness of the scrolling. Looking good so far.
Do you see it stuttering then?
It stutters a little, unless this is just a youtube issue.
Hope for kickstarter come before 2024
Me to
Looks like a great game but I personally don't like some of the coloring specially the use of magenta on some stages, like the use of it on trees. Other than that, looks pretty good and love the SOR music like score.
I guess not every game is for everyone 👍
Даже мне, совершенно не фанату данного жанра, захотелось поиграть в полную версию этой игры👍👍👍
😅 I know what you mean.
I think my reference point was an update to an existing title but...
The visuals remind me mostly of NeoXYX. Which is no bad thing!
Looks and sounds great 👌
My personal criticisms would be:
1. Personally, I prefer the ability to collect different shoot style power ups in game as opposed to selecting a specific craft.
2. I find the fade out/in to different areas mid game to be a bit of a mood breaker. Im hoping that's just an interim solution pending them finalising the stage transitions (ie: like when you fly into the enemy ship on Stage 1 of RType; it doesnt just fade to white, you actually fight your way in 💪). That felt lazy AF so hope they can sort that 👍
I guess we will have to wait until the final version.
I can't believe this can be done on Genesis. definitely for a mature player.
Yup, it's amazing.
This demo seems a very early stage of the game development.
Interesting, why do you say that? Do you not like the abstract art?
I'd like to know why you think that too.
@@RetroGamerBoy Look and compare, the futuristic city stage background is much more detailed in your previous videos. The bomb effect it's much more simpler in this demo too.
@@shmupstick pardon, i answer before see your comment. I love the pixel art, my two points are in the previous comment.
@@flaviatatiana1953 Ah, you men it like that. :)
Sorry to say, but it's more or less final versions of everything you see here.
I feel like being the only one who doesn't like this graphically. It is not accesible at all and I struggle to distinguish the ship from the background
You're not alone, quite a few people don't like the art style.
