  • A mishap in the studio triggers (after 30 seconds of silence) the Emergency Tape / Playout system on BBC Radio 1 during Matt Edmonson's show on Tuesday 25th October 2016.
It is unclear why a trailer managed to play before the silence. Possibly a "dying gasp" trigger by equipment in the studio, upon power failure, to fire off a (normally) 3 minute song?

Sounds like they switched to another studio rather than silence detector, as it started half way through a song.

Yeah. I've commented with my guess, having been in a BBC studio recently.

The mixer core (the I/O box) and playout computers sit in a Local Apps Room - if the studio power is cut, anything scheduled and cued into a player will apparently play out automatically - in this case it was a trail.

Thanks for the info. I had read about their centralisation of the playout on BBC local radio (audio played from a data center in London rather than from each local station) and assumed London based stations had similar .. remote playout from the studio. Thanks for the comment and if you wouldn't mind - it would be incredibly helpful to me if you would subscribe :) (notifications can be off though).

Nah, that's just in local radio, well until the next studio refurbs perhaps! I think the plan is to go fully AoIP.
Most radio studios don't have playout servers in the studio, they mostly run in a racks room with some heavy UPS battery backups - even on some of the smallest community stations. The EPO button only kills the kit in the room.
The weird cut of the silence detector was the Master Control Room inhibiting the ECD from air at first because they probably assumed someone just forgot to hit play in the studio haha.

Been inside the BBC studio, Radio Wales. The computers had a thing that let them chose where to broadcast out of. I wonder if someone in a different studio realised the mishap, ran to a different studio and fired off a couple tracks, you can hear them in the background lol. @Ashley thanks for the inspo that seems right

You should hear Radio 1 now, worst its ever been, that's why all the good presenters have left

I'd agree with that. The best times for content, great presenters and innovation were when they were experimenting with live video on the website for some shows.
