Bonnie gives us a Masterclass in taking her time and singing behind the beat. No scales or arpeggios, no whoops and swoops, just pure soul. If she ever writes an autobiography, it should be titled Takin' My Time, which is both a song she once recorded and a description of her career arc.
Takin' My Time was written by Bill Payne of Little Feat and was recorded on their first album in 1970. Bill still occasionally performs the song. He and other members of Feat were among the musicians on Bonnie's 1973 album titled Takin' My Time which did not, by the way, include the song.
This gig being 1974 she'd just turned 25....she's still selling out venues at 73 now, & just won a Grammy. 50 years and her voice is still fantastic. Saw her 3yrs ago, still has her guitar chops as well.❤
That tracks, her debut album was released in January 1975, but Bonnie grew up surrounded by musicians, she did get radio play in 1974, on the FM stations in Southern California. I hadn’t seen her with a center part or without the white stripe in her side part, like when I first saw her live in 1981, her hair was red and her white stripe was prominent, my best friend bought me all of Bonnie’s albums for my birthday in 1981. I was still a newlywed & 45 years later still with my husband.
So LOVE Bonnie Raitt! The first clip of Buddy and Phil Guy made me weep! I was Phil’s “handler” when he performed in Eastern Canada from 1999 to 2012! I miss him! Rip Phil Guy! Peace
I never would have rocked to this authentic blast from the past had Bonnie not shared it with us. Binnie is a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you dear woman ❤
Hey Bonnie, I got to meet Steve & Melonie on Greg Nelson’s Sailboat back when. . , the Jammers had played Grandmas the night before to a full tent. Summertime & the living was easy. . .
I love Chicago blues and these guys are some of the very best in this style. What a treasure. She sounds so good with Junior Wells & Buddy Guy behind her. But then again, who wouldn't?
My sophomore year at UChicago, Muddy Waters was supposed to play on campus, but he got sick, and so Buddy Guy and Junior Wells played instead. I never got to see Muddy; sadly, he died soon afterward. But Buddy and Junior blew me away. Happy belated birthday, Bonnie!
I was Baptisted in these blues many times on the banks of the MS river In Memphis, by these same greats and many more over the years. How lucky and honored am I. Damn. It's now just part of me. Once you find these blues, they don't leave.......thank you guys. And Miss Badass Bonnie, There are no words. Just Badass. Since the mid 70's you have been my hero. Thank You. RIP John Prine.
My mother grew up as a teenager in the early 50s in Memphis about the same age as Jr. Wells, Jr. Parker, Sonnyboy Williamson, well she is 85 now but she mostly knew Elvis and remembers when he was recording Mystery Train for Junior Parker at Sun Records.
graitt memories of Bonnie in concert during the 1970's (Music Hall Boston w/ Tom Waits opening) and especially all the New England shows during the summer... great vocalist and slide master, a real musician not fixated on the "babe" factor in her persona, the real deal, she was bright, beautiful and talented, a wicked sense of humor in her shows, all these years 50+ still a hot ticket!!
You nailed it perfectly, she hasn't relied on the babe factor one bit, though she is quite attractive in many ways. I attended only one concert at Boston Music Hall. A $5 ticket from a scalper got me in to see J. Geils, 1973. I would've loved seeing Tom Waits in the 1970s, likewise babe Bonnie.
If only to see Buddy in that coat, I'm sure this was more than worth the price of the ticket and wait. Adore Sista Bonnie. To see her here in this dated clip is indeed a treat. Thanks for sharing this :)
Notable songs here: Love Me Like a Man ( Chris Smither), Kokomo Blues/Write me a few of your Lines (Mississippi Fred McDowell), Women Be Wise (Sippie Wallace), Angel from Montgomery (John Prine)., Big Road Blues (Tommy Johnson cover, IIRC), Everybody's Crying Mercy ( with Junior Wells on harp). I really enjoyed this show!
I love Buddy Guy, Junior Wells & especially Bonnie Raitt - Oh Wow! So glad I found this visual and earworm treat! Only problem is this isn’t quite loud enough - darn it.
I remember playing her record “Give It Up” over and over when I was a teenager in the early 70s , and seeing her play around Cambridge. Such a great slide guitar player!
I am old enough, but I didn't know anything about her in this earlier part of her career. It was only when she shot back up the charts in the early '90s that I caught onto her. Great to hear the earlier stuff.
Im soo. glad you did! She was part of the East Coast scene, since I can remember, and I’m 65. From Lowel George to John Hammond - she was there, a part of it, and totally soaked it up! In my little world, she is THE most important female player! Ever! Peace
I had to come back and add/qualify - that I’ve played for over 50 years, and can’t touch her! To say “female player” isn’t right - she is just one of the BEST EVER. PERIOD! Peace
I saw her once or twice back in the day at the Greek theater in Berkeley. Loved her back then, love her now and frankly I am amazed at her sustained continuous success throughout the years. This is a fine and talented singer and song writer.
I saw her a few times at the Cow Palace in Madison. She was awesome! Then about 10-12 years later I came home from work, turned on the news where they were showing highlights of her "sweeping the Grannies for her Nick-of-Time album and said to myself... What took ya so long, I've been loving her music for years. So yes, her sustainability is amazing.
I was at a customers house and we were talking about the good old days. I said one of my regrets was not being old enough to have seen Bonnie Raitt at the Shaboo night club in the 70's. Their friend said she saw Bonnie there and the last time she was at the Shaboo the police tear gassed the crowd ! Yea the 70' were wild times !
DaveFazzino, the Shaboo was quite a firetrap, low-ceilinged with few exits. You could reach up and touch numerous ceiling pipes; one hot August night Johnny Winter was playing and everybody's sweat was condensing on the pipes and falling back on us like rain.
Saw these blues players and many others at small intimate venues across Chicagoland back in seventies. Soundstage was always great to watch but I had already heard Bonnie Raitt prior. I first heard her in summer of this same year,1974 on WXRT radio Sunday night concert. I was hooked at first listen. Bought many albums and about wore out the First 1971 album and the Give It Up album. Finally saw her live in 1981,1986, 1990 and 1991.
I remember seeing this epic episode! I was thrilled when Soundstage started on PBS, quality was not great but I as a teen tried not to ever miss a concert when I was in High School and the college dorms but unfortunately after that didn't have a TV for quite a few years. Thank goodness for You Tube.
@Bonnie Raitt Thank's so much Bonnie! I am honored you replied in person! I guess it takes a 49er to know a good thing when I hear it! Keep on singing young lady! Ha Ha! we are only old in years not in the mind! With much love as we fans can send. Alan L. Dehn
Both she and Buddy Guy were playing Guilds. Cool. So jaw-droppingly wonderful to watch this vid of two of the finest kind of blues singers and players. YES.
When I watch the opening number, I"m forced to ask: DId Buddy Guy go through a Huggy Bear phase or did Huggy Bear go through a Buddy Guy Phase? I kinda think Buddy wore it better :-)
A bat-shit-crazy woman wore a similar outfit at a recent State of the Union address, and I had the exact same reaction you did: "that looks like a Huggy Bear coat"! Buddy once recorded a record called "Stone Crazy", but although he acts like a wildman on stage, he's not insane ---- and that coat looks better on him than it does on that nasty woman.....
Chris Johnson me too! I didn’t actually get into BR until “Something To Talk About,” hit the top 40, I had no clue how much of a legend she already was then, and still is! What amazes me, is how iconic HER voice is! Hasn’t changed after all these years!

Recently saw Buddy Guy at the Hollywood Bowl. It was an excellent show. He's still spunky as ever.
I saw her so many times in the 1970s. Always a pleasant experience. Always.
This is blessing my ears. Music just doesn't get better than this. So smooth.
Thanks to a friend for giving me this link. So sweet to hear younger Bonnie.. Jef Labes on the piano to boot! Golden memories 💛

She was so great.
It doesn't get better, Buddy Guy, probably the best showman I have ever seen; and beautiful Bonnie. Goosebumps!

Nice concert and the first I've seen of Bonnie in the 70's. A commercial came on during You Got To Feel It and blew my speakers! WTH!!!

Heavens to Murgertroy! Jr. Wells and his harp!!!

I was blessed to see Bonnie back in 1971/72 in Boston at Harvard. She is still as awesome now as she was back then.
Me, too!
Memphis in my case. Just a few years later. I have seen her more than anybody. Just great. Were we ever that young? 😆
I still want to be Bonnie Raitt when I grow up 😊
The final song is actually titled "Big Road Blues" (written by Tommy Johnson).
