The split screen is a tribute to the neo soul movement. Lauryn was one of the most successful neo soul artist from that era. She was pregnant during this video. The 1998 version of her was filmed before she started showing. The 1968 version was filmed when she started to really show. The dress and jacket was designed to cover her stomach but if you look really closely you can catch glimpses of her pregnant belly. By the time the Ex Factor video came out she had given birth not long before shooting started. The way her body bounced back is so amazing that most people didn't even realize that she was ever pregnant.
Lauryn Hill is one of the greatest artists of all time! Her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is also one of the greatest of all time, winning album of the year at the Grammys and giving her a record setting 5 Grammys in one night. PLEASE react to the entire album. It is a classic from start to finish.
Yes youngster, Lauren with that velvety voice is a master lyricist. Love your reaction. Please listen to Lisa Fischer 1991 live performance of How Can I Ease the Pain. Thank you from your other mother outta Alabama. Mom
Classic, Absolute Classic Lauryn is what u get when u ask for a complete artist ... Vocalist, wordsmith, melody filled and has substance worthy of ingesting.
Literally one of my favorite songs on her album, I feel like everybody should hear it but especially my black people. I feel like us black people need to really grow from our mistakes that she mentions. Ps. I love your reaction and Lauryn Hill is my fav female artist.❤️
Idk if there’s any artist that can sing AND rap this well. She’s so good she’s showing how you can make a catchy hit song that’s also got meaning. People act like it’s imposing it’s not
Oooooo react to Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount duet of "His Eye is the Sparrow", one of the best renditions of that song(my personal favorite). Her voice control is on full display and her unique, soulful tone. Some of the most gorgeous runs you will ever hear.
Lauryn was truly the total package. On top of being one of the goat female rappers, shes an incredible singer on top of it. Then she could act! It's a shame her career went south as fast as it did cuz she coulda ended up one of the greatest entertainers period.
This song became her first and only number to hit number one on the billboard hot 100 charts this was the very beginning as a solo artist for Lauryn with her first and only full length album the miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill "Final Hour". She's lyrically flexin on any rapper you can name. The horns on this track are dope as well as her background vocals. It's gotta be your next Lauryn song. You won't be disappointed.
This track from Lauryn Hill's Album...The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The album swept the Grammy's winning Album of the Year. She has already cemented her place as one of the greatest artists ever. The entire album is fantastic, please check it out!!!
I don't know if anyone mentioned it....but this was actually the first song by a female rapper to be #1 on Billboard Hot 100. Rap had existed for a little over 20 years at this point and this was the first female rapper to be #1 in the country.
This album was massive. A little too massive that Lauren Hill basically hated the lime light. It’s so funny how I look back at this song and can remember exactly the year it came out and what i was doing, This song was released in August 1998. I was 14 or 15.I was entering my freshman year of high school and it would always come on when I was getting out of my moms car when she would drop my sister and I at school. Best memories
lawrence carr exactly. I really forgot how good this song was. I feel like Lauryn Hill is needed especially in this era of music. Hopefully we will hear from her again soon
Jack!! Bro!!! Lauryn Hill is by far my favorite female artist all-time... She doesn't get the respect that she greatly deserves... I would love to see a reaction from you to two of my favorite tracks from her that she performed during her MTV Unplugged live performance of "Mystery og Iniquity" & "War in the Mind"... Lyrically, masterful and powerful messages are nothing less than jewels of truth... The entire performance of her MTV Unplugged was performed with nothing but her amazing voice and acoustic guitar.... #Masterpiece
I just came upon your channel today. I have been watching your videos nonstop. Your reaction videos are so clean and to the point. I love your understanding and appreciation for the music and the artists. Your attention to detail is impressive. Keep up the good work and stay safe and Blessed.
Jack I love your channel and content. Ms. Lauryn Hill was one of the first to embrace this sound of hip hop and r&b as a solo artist. Think about that. She didnt need to collaborate with rap artists to have what's called the "Love Thug Ballad". Lauryn was all that on her own. Just a side note... She helped me realize my dreams in Sister Act 2. Whoopi Goldbergs character says to Lauryns character (Rita), "If you get up in the morning and all you can think about is singing then you were meant to be a singer." I've seen her live twice and had the pleasure of meeting her. They really don't make 'em like her any more. A true gem. Forever a legend. 🌻💜
This song is life, a life lesson, that album, was something more then just an album, it was formative. She’s not a singer, she’s a teacher. I wish she did more, like A LOT MORE.
The 90-ies had a very deep, spiritual and karmic type of vibe, very educational, being a teenager and hearing all these themes, such soulful music, all just felt heartfelt. Off the hook talent in general reined, because of amazing musical examples. It was a time of blending, styles, people, speaking your mind, and telling Truth. The music reflected what people went through, no more filters. I hope that these things come in cycles, so we will get back to it again, after all, all is Science.
I remember saving up to buy the CD in 8th or 9th grade and I loved it. Lauryn Hill is a God I fell in love with her as a little girl Watching Sister Act 2. She's a incredible singer, incredible rap artist and incredible actor. She blew me away.
I met Lauryn back in ´94 when the Fugees and Brownstone (an R&B group) did a showcase at the Supper Club in Manhattan. By 4 bars in I looked at my brother and said she needs to go solo; she’s a superstar and too big for these dudes. The very next day (or weekend) we saw their video premiere on Video Music Box. Also my Brother tried to talk to her. Rejected. She’s in my top 5 of all time emcees (male or female).
This WHOLE album was amazing. One of THE best soul singers/ rappers/ poets, no doubt. Message still relevant and you have to respect Lauryn for being a truth teller. I think that's why she caught alot of flak. I went to one of her concerts. It was incredible. I recommend "To Zion" to react to. Think that's my fav Lauryn Hill jam.
I liked your commentary on the differences between the 70s, 80s, 90s, and now. Even though you’re probably not more than 20 years old, you’ve observed a lot about the decades that preceded you. I was born in 1975, so I was a kid in the 80s, and came of age in the 90s. I love to look at the ways that popular culture and perspective changes throughout the decades. You might be able to tell me more about what is happening now, but to give you a few thoughts on what changed from the 70s to the 80s to the 90s, I can tell you what it was like to experience it. There are a lot of things that take place in a decade, and millions of people experiencing them, so obviously I can’t speak to everyone”s experience, just my own experience of popular culture at the time. I was just a kid in the 70s, but the general feeling was one of freedom and allowing yourself to relax and be yourself. When the 80s came around and music swung towards new wave, it was like the general consciousness was tapping in to the weirdest and most offbeat ideas that were left to discover. The overtly weird hairstyles, fashion, neon colors etc. were like freedom of expression being allowed to go out to the furthest and craziest extent possible. And the vibe was about fun and letting imagination run wild. Then towards the end of the 80s, rap and hip hop entered the mainstream. It was much more raw, direct, and coming from groups like NWA, it was covering an experience of life that was very different than what had so far been focused on in the popular culture. Just the authenticity and realness of the lyrics, and the boldness of a new art form was exciting and undeniable. Coming into the 90s, hip-hop beats made everyone want to dance too. Then, in about 93, grunge rock, especially the band Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” became popular, and it was like the focus of popular culture changed in the course of a week. This brought in a real desire to poke holes in the hypocrisy of main stream institutions and to call attention to popular culture as an entity in itself. There was a desire to make overt and ironic reference to popular culture of decades past, especially the 70s. You saw fashion and music reject the excess of the 80s and get a little more direct and in your face. Fashion became purposely utilitarian - I remember wearing Dickies work pants to my office job. There are many more things that could be said, especially about how grunge culture glorified the working class in a naive way and how our obsession with irony and reaction of mainstream culture was actually really pretentious. But that’s a taste of what it was like to participate in those three decades.
The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill was released the summer I graduated from high school and to this day I still believe it to be an absolute masterpiece and in my personal opinion it’s the greatest album of the 1990’s taking Hip-Hop Soul to a whole new level.
Lauryn, Ryan Toby (City High), and Tonya Blount were all in Sister Act 2 (Joyful, Joyful would be a great song to see her talent). Crazy so many young stars were in one movie
FINAL HOUR is a great cut from her. Has anyone recommended 90's group Hi-5? Usher sampled "The Kissing Game" for Don't waste my time. You also can't go wrong with NEW EDITION.
Love how you break down the lyrics, you are really listening. I heard you say on another reaction video about how much you love music....I can see it in how you describe what you are listening to....curiousity... do you have a musical background, did you go to school for music or simply just picked up an instrument and started playing. Btw, thanks for sending back a response. You appear to be a very positive person....You tube needs that.
Thank you! I say this every day about people who think you can steal, hide and lie. But you think God is going to let you win every time and remain EVIL. Lauren is right.
The beginning of the 60s was an extension of the 50s and post war 40s where there was an economic boom from the Great Depression and War. The late 60s was a reaction to this but failed in that the gov shut the counterculture down but the aesthetics continued on to the early 70s. After Reagan got elected you had another boom (albeit at the expense of Millenials and Gen Zs who are now paying for what the debt they incurred) and along with that you had a decade of excess and vanity but you also had an underground scene of punk rock and hip hop brewing as a reaction to this which exploded in the late 80s with Hip Hop with Public Enemy and NWA and in 1991 with Nirvana, PJ, AiC, and Soundgarden.
Not only a talented Music Artist but a talented Actress as well u may have seen, thought she looked familiar and bout known why, it's because you've seen her Sister Act II alongside Whoopi Goldberg.
GREAT reaction, Jack! She also raps throughout "lost ones" and "the final hour". She also has several joints on her "unplugged" album that are lyrically on a WHOLE other level that you should check out independently. She also spits pretty hard on most of "The Fugees" joints too
Another great song that has a whole verse calling out the rap game and how videos were all same thing is Lupe Fiasco - “Daydreamin’”. Killer song and beat/production too And another speaking to inspire type song is Nas “I Can”. He speaks to kids and tells them they can be whatever they want when they grow up and teaches them black history of empires in Africa before being enslaved and taken away
Loving your reactions to 90s R&B queens. You really seem to enjoy them, so do yourself a favor & check out some Mary J. Any song by Mary is a banger, but please check out"Real love, " and "You're all I need" feat. Method Man. 👍
You're 18? You have a old soul. Very well spoken and knowledgeable young man. Your parents raised you right. She was pregnant with Bob Marley's son when she did this video. If you like this song then you're going to love The Sweetest Thing, when she was with the Fugees. Please react to that jam
The only female in her group, The FuGees but raps better than the guys. She is never given that prop probably because of that. She's the best Female MCs since the inception of Hip-Hop even till this current day. I'll place her in my Top 5 MCs of all time right above Eminem too.
The meaning of the split screen is to show no matter how much things change, they still stay the same.
So true
WOWWW
One is her soulful singing side and the other is her rapping side
Amen! Rap at its best. Straight poetry. Plus her vocal abilities. One of a kind.

1998 - "Showing off your ass cos you thinking it's a trend, girlfriend. Let me break it down for you again"

@theantagonist: Period.
and she was pregnant while recording this album
"Everything is Everything" is another good song from her
The WHOLE album is a masterpiece. I USED TO LOVE HIM, a duet with Mary J Blige was another excellent song.
The 70s style was huge in the 90s with the bell bottoms, platform shoes and natural hair.
The most beautiful thing about this song is that it is so layered vocally and melodically and all those layers are none other than Lauryn Hill.
Yes youngster, Lauren with that velvety voice is a master lyricist.
Love your reaction.
Please listen to Lisa Fischer 1991 live performance of How Can I Ease the Pain.
Thank you from your other mother outta Alabama. Mom
agreed. Haven't see that live perf but she nailed big time on recording. Those whistle 😍😍
That so absolutely true ....
Dope. You GOTTA hear Lauryn w Bob Marley- Turn Your Lights Down Low

Azealia banks has a similar sounding voice
In 1981, Motown artist Teena Marie sung and rapped quite well on her song “Square Biz”.
Also check out the fugees cause lauryn hill was also apart of a rap group, and then you can really get into her skill set as an MC.
Roy Nuff said!!

Lauren Hill was out there spitting to men and women. Warning us!!! She was impeccable!! ❤ The fact that it still hits today shows that it is timeless!

Lauryn Hill was a singer, rapper, and a great actress! when you get a chance watch sister act
Lauryn is one of the most underrated artists. Not only beautiful singer but rapper. An original beauty.
How blessed was the baby that she was pregnant with in the video. To watch their legendary mom bless the world with her music.

He's young so if anything he's going to school rn for it...but regardless music is his hobby. He likes production etc. and makes his own beats.
And noticed authentic sounding instrumentals. Something you don't get a lot of in today's hip-hop and rap music.
