At the start of 2021 Tim Aylen created Chargeheads to ELECTRIFY petrolheads, essentially to introduce car enthusiasts into electric cars by sharing content on modified EV's and EV conversions. An Electric Petrolhead if you like........A CHARGEHEAD!!!!
Embark on an electrifying adventure with me as I delve into the realm of EV conversions! My journey took me on a captivating exploration, visiting industry giants to uncover the perfect candidate for transformation. Amidst the array of options, I found myself drawn to the lesser-known gem, the TVR Tasmin 350i, affectionately known as the Wedge (#tvrwedgee). After meticulous evaluation, I decided to infuse this iconic beauty with electric vitality. With a TVR Griffith already igniting my passion for untamed, adrenaline-fueled rides without driver aids, the choice to electrify a TVR was a natural progression.
My 2nd project was electrifying a 1970's BSA Aerial 3 Tricycle Scooter into a fun short range deathtrap, that is #SpecialTrikee project! Partnering with my friend Vinny, we've injected new life into this classic ride, creating an electrifying experience like no other. Perfect for zipping around town on local jaunts, it's an absolute blast! Even Mrs. Chargehead affectionately dubs it my 'special scooter' - a charming nod to its origins as a humble 50cc two-stroke, now boasting a "dynamic" 250-watt motor
Introducing our latest endeavor: Rustee #RusteeTesla - the ultimate Tesla Model 3 Long Range upgrade project! Our mission? To elevate its aesthetics, enhance handling, and supercharge performance, all while retaining its unrivaled daily mileage and efficiency. How? By meticulously integrating recycled parts, we're not just making it better, but greener too. Get ready to witness the evolution of eco-conscious luxury, where sustainability meets superior driving experience
I hope to not only entertain with ChargeheadsUK Channel and the #TVRWedgee, #SpecialTrikee and #RusteeTesla builds, but also to inspire watchers to create their own greener transport.
With the help of leaders in their field like Ralph Hosier (Engineer, designer, builder of special vehicles, teacher, writer, TV presenter and trouble maker.

Great vid, pal. The bush fitted is £110+vat per side, for the next time you need it 🤟
Thanks for highlighting. Need to work out what bushes i might need now. Got some goodies to fit as well 😉
I drive a 2022 MY LR and it needed two rear knuckles
And two front outer front bearings replaced at 39,000 miles. I’m happy happy it was done under warranty, but a little disappointed that a £56k car needs that work done at 40k miles. I’ll probably go back to a Model 3 as it’s a nicer drive. HEVRA garages and Cleeverly are doing sterling work at realistic prices. Great videos!
Yes Hevra and Cleevely is where to go for most EV maintenance 💯. Thanks for your comment 😉
Super video Tim! I'm a driving instructor using my 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long Range as a tuition car. Plus the good fortune of being based just 5 minute's drive from Cleevely EV. Shout out to Matt Cleevely. And James Coates (James & Kate on RUclips), Cleevely Mobile Service. Learner drivers' parents frequently ask me "what is the car really like?" After all, their kids must be exaggerating, right? So, I feel obliged to warn them not to sit in the driver's seat and try it out... sure enough, they want one! No advertising needed. This is a product that sells itself.
Thanks 🙏, i took my friend out in mine recently who's a driving instructor. A no brainer for a learner car an EV IMO 👍
Can I just ask, isn’t a Tesla very different to drive than a cheap car that a first time driver would be able to afford ? One pedal driving and all of the automated safety features etc. wouldn’t it benefit a first time driver to learn in an older car with less features so when they end up in a Peugeot 206 or a clapped out fiesta they know how to drive it and aren’t surprised when they start rolling backwards on an incline at a junction ?
@@0barrington0 Yes, you're correct. The Tesla is very different to drive than a cheap car with an internal combustion engine and manual transmission. When I commenced teaching learner drivers in the Tesla three years ago, I offered a specific lesson to 'convert' to driving an automatic ICE. Without exception this proved to be unnecessary as they quickly adapt using the brake pedal to control their ICE car 'running on' when they lift off the gas and requirement to use the brake pedal to maintain 'snail's pace' speed and hold the vehicle in position when parking. The main complaint I hear is that their parent's car in which they're practising is noisy, it's 'clunky', takes 'forever' to accelerate, doesn't stop properly without lots of braking and they have to select Park and apply Handbrake when waiting at traffic lights. As for "when they start rolling backwards on an incline at a junction"... automatic petrol and diesel cars don't do this either. Apologies, I'm not trying to be patronising, but to be clear, learner drivers taking lessons in an electric car are applying for an Automatic Full Driving Licence. They won't be driving manual transmission unless they take another driving test to do so. When I first tried an electric car back in 2015, after 45 years of driving manual and automatic transmission ICE cars... I couldn't believe my luck!
@0barrington0 Passing a driving test in a Tesla or any other EV means you can only drive an automatic car.
So driving a manual is not an option.
Also, once you drive an EV, driving any fossil car is something you will find completely horrible.
I have now done over 150,000 miles on my cheap as chips MG5. No issues at all, no loss of range, a perfect car for taxi work and driving instructors.
I have saved over £24000 so far in 3 years, 10 months.
Many customers have never been in an EV before. Everyone loves the EV.
@@williamarmstrong7199 Nice work!!! 61Kwh?
Great Video Tim, I've had my M3P for almost 5 yrs now (one of the first to collect in the UK) and it's been fantastic! By far the best car I've owned and like you I plan to run it for as long as possible. Still feels and drives like new too. Taking advantage of Octopus Go/Intelligent and most charging being at home, over the last 5 yrs it's averaged out at about 2-3p a mile - which is just incredible for a car that does 0-60 in 3s!
Amazing, great to hear stories like this 💯⚡️🙏
Was it... electrifying
Looks like I collected my 2019 M3LR at the same time as yours. I'm a driving instructor using it as a learner driver tuition car. The car still excites me every day and it goes without saying that learners can't believe their luck - especially those that have repeatedly failed tests before in manual transmission ICEs or been shouted at by their driving instructors for stalling at traffic lights, hill starts, moving off from roadside etc. As for Octopus charging overnight at home for only 7.5p per kWh... extraordinary! 7.5p divided by 4 = 1.9p per mile!!
@@B0BHW what range? I'm considering a used one
@@DaleSteel I charge my 5 year old Tesla to 80% every night and the car tends to read 250 to 255 miles in the rare event I change the battery icon to miles instead of %age. In my case, more than enough range to carry out 3 or 4 two hour driving lessons a day. However, I never tend to bother with mileage range and leave the battery icon on %age. Overnight charging means the 'tank' is always full every morning. What's more, the superchargers on the Tesla Supercharging network are fast, reliable and completely trouble free to use. Buy a Tesla Model 3 or Y, especially the Long Range or Performance models and I doubt you'll ever think about 'range'. Totally awesome vehicles. My only regret is driving ICEs for so many years and worse... teaching learners to drive them!
My model 3 dual motor almost has 100k miles and main thing I had to replace was control arms, I replaced all of them in front, about $500 DIY. Not bad besides tires for 100k miles, almost looks new inside. I agree model 3 in today market is the best car for the money. My BMW’s were much more expensive to maintain. Batteries on model 3 long range made to last 500k miles, some already have almost 400k on model 3 LR. My model 3 saves me $300 a month in fuel cost compare to my bmw 335i, it’s $6 a gallon here.
I hope Rustee lasts, just about to add some nice bits to her
I am still to buy an EV, but a used model 3 is going to be my choice within the next 6 months. So looking up HEVRA garages near me, and the only one is my favourite garage anyway, and the one I have used for the last 20 years with my ICE cars. That has cheered me up no end.
@@Jimages_uk happy days, itll be interesting to see what the prices look like then 🤔
My model 3 Performance at 5 years old, 61k miles and just got stung with my first major service bill of £4k as the steering rack needs replacing due to corrosion and thermal damage in the terminals.
But other than that it’s been absolutely superb. Though I’m going to upgrade for sure. Great video, appreciate the insights. 👌
Did tesla cover part of the expanse? That's not the kind of expanse you expect on a 5 years old car.
Hey, did tesla covered smth of that price?
Nicely put together mate, thanks for the info. Love the way you keep the detailed price sheet.
@@GG63015 thanks 🙏
The price is painful, a model 3 long-range with this mileage now goes for around 25k€ in the Netherlands or Germany.

Co-incidence? You clicked this vid 😂 certainly not random
Great video after 3 years with my fantastic Kia E Niro 4+, I have now got a Tesla Model 3. Great to hear that maintenance has been cheap for your last 45,000 miles. Fuel savings alone are incredible, around £3.30 for 200 miles is an amazing thing when you can charge at home on a cheap rate of 7.5pence. I have just found your channel and now subscribed!
Thanks for your comment and subscribing 👍👍
That's really good 2p a mile is not that difficult if charging at 7.5p a kW 200miles in a a normal car would cost more like £40 could probably use a whole tank doing 400miles and cost over £100 to fill it back up.
I’m deciding if I should buy a dual motor 2020 model 3 or a 2021 e Nero 4+ . Both are ~ £15k
@@antoniopalmero4063 Try driving both, for me the Tesla Model 3 may have firm suspension that I did not like. The Kia was a great EV but does charge slower and is well suited to a 50kWh charger and a 45 - 50 minute lunch/coffee stop if doing a long trip. I did not do many long trips but on the ones I did, it worked out very well, with it needing to charge when I needed to.
Tesla will be a quicker charge and give access to the super charger network.
I have the new 2024 M3 that is a very good upgrade over the older one.
@@Jaw0lf Thanks , I think I’ll go for the long range model 3 because if I got the Kia I would always be wondering what the Tesla would be like. I’m upgrading from a 2019 leaf Tekna so will be missing out on a few luxuries unless I go for a 2021 model 3 . I’m only 58 so not old enough for a Kia e Nero anyway 🤣.

The thing about charging to 80% and range (and then detractors say "see you car cant do more than say 220 miles) is that the 80% "rule" is for general use, every day (or week or whatever) charging.
If you are going on a long trip theres absolutely no reason not to charge to 100% on the day of the trip especially if that might mean you dont need to stop at all.
You just shouldnt charge to 100% then leave for days.
ETA subbed
Absolutely, i charged to 95% Tuesday as I knew i was going further, just not every time I charge 🤷♂️

@@usefulrandom1855 lol don't blame you, juat try to slow it down so you leave straight away or close to once it gets there😉
Worth adding that LFP Battery pack Teslas (Standard range) WANT you to charge to 100% regularly. They are unaffected by charging to 100%. I went on a 950 mile round trip to the North West Of Ireland in February last year and it was effortless. We had to stop before The Model Y LR did. You get detractors saying they can do 800 miles non-stop in a diesel [and piss carefully into a Lucozade bottle?] but will then go into denial when it is pointed out to them that they are paying through the nose to be able to do this.

Thanks for the informative video. Do you recommend buy a used Model Y from the Tesla website or dealers? If you buy from the Tesla site they give an extra 1 year warranty with their certified vehicles. debating which year is good 2022 or 2023 because under 30K miles it's costs around $30k. Thanks

Great vid. What model year is it? One thing you never mentioned was potential HV battery failure. I’ve had my M3 from new for almost 5 years now. The HV battery failed at 44k miles a few months ago. Tesla replace them under warranty (up to 120k miles or 8 years - whatever is soonest). But only with a refurbished battery. Let me know if you want more details, it’s a whole story. So, I’m wondering if you’ve considered protecting yourself against an HV battery failure out of warranty. The cost of replacement is £18 - £20k and so that is a potential write off for a second hand M3. Something buyers and owners need to be aware of. My M3 is mostly charged at home with minimal use of superchargers. Give this post a thumbs up if you’re considering a second hand M3 and would like to understand more.

Would you recommend owning a Tesla to someone with home charging and therefore reliant on public charging infrastructure?
If you mean without home charging it would depend on your usecase. Daily mileage, commute, and location. Happy to consult for free if you can give me a review afterwards.
GReat video 1st time wathcing but I'm now seriously going to go get an EV. I've tested alot and there are other I would much prefer over a Tesla (most) hoever I can't buy new and with prioces low specially on the Tesla's as they are more numerous that's what I'll be getting. The question is Model 3 or S. I prefer bigger cars current one is BMW 3 GT. Huge boot love it because its the X-Drive the MPG not so much even though 2.0d. 40mpg best I can get up and down the A1 Mon-Fri.
So back to the Question Older S or newere Model 3 Long range Dual Motor.
Ta
100% the 3. It has loads of space 😉
@@chargeheadsuk Will swap my research to a Model 3, also had a friend who had a 3 now an S 100DL, though its nuts, its for the family with three kids. His comments were Fast (Very stupid fast) can fit the three kids better in the S than the 3 but other than those two points prefers the 3.
Thanks
Shouldn't you mention the year of model at the start?
I wonder how much change lowering springs give?

Hi thinking of buying a Tesla Model 3 Long Range as my 1st EV. Could of Questions how much is a home charger to get fitted? I Drive Roughly 450 miles per month is worth me getting a EV?
There are deals on home chargers I saw one for 750 from memory, however it all depends on your house electrics. If you have a night tariff like the Eon drive at 9.5p per Kwh or similar your "fuel" costs will be £14 a month 😉
@chargeheadsuk I'm with octopus I know they have octopus go!
I don't think it's worth it only doing 450 miles a month. That means a normal tank of fuel in a ice car would easily last a whole month. I was filling up every week at £100 a time so £450 a month. It's now £132 a month in electric but that's 23p kW rate.
Subjective. What does worth it mean?
@@aaronbounds1336 I wouldn't choose electric if it was going to cost more money. That's what I meant.
Love the rims. Imo M3 look awesome slammed on air. And with those rims!!! Do it! 😂
It would look sick, however i habe come across some coilovers at a deal i couldnt refuse. Might consider though if a company offers them 😉
i charge to 60% charge daily with my new highland if i am not going on a road trip which rarely happens.

And 304m for 80% I've only charged to 100% 3 times so far. Done 9552miles so far only home charging.
Long Range what Kw? Battery? what year manufacture? made in China or USA?
My M3 is a Fremont 2019 Long Range AWD
Drive like a chauffeur and think ahead and be light on the brakes.
So my take on this is the only thing you save on on a high millage ev as in servicing is cam belts and water pump from ice everything else is the same with bushes, but with a well serviced ice car you wont have the range question, if you fill a 2 year old car and a 7 year well serviced car the tank range will be not far off, but with an ev it would depend on how a previous owner has treated and charged the battery and I know 2 people that have 125k and 140k teslas that have had to have new or recon batteries that's out of warranty and have a bill for over 11k, I think more needs to be said about actual state of battery and and more realistic battery life left when joe blogs buys a used high miller ev because some poor sap will be the one that has to replace the battery and then they become uneconomical.
What model's are you friends Tesla's the X or S? I have done battery degradation tests a fews vids ago and will do more as time goes on.
@@chargeheadsuk both Ss, the one guy one has free charging for life and tesla said before he brought it it was going to be good for a minimum of 200k miles, as its out of warranty he's got to fork out £11500 for a recon battery, they wouldn't even take it in px, he said its the worst financial decision he's made so unless he puts another battery in its worth a few hundred pounds as he can only drive it less than 30 miles. He was so happy to get it because he drives all over the UK and goes to France and Spain a lot and said it's not going to cost me anything to drive. I know another guy who works round the corner from me and has a porsche taycan and has been back to dealer with charging faults and heater problems, his secretary has an id4 that's got serious gremlins, if I had to choose an ev the it would be between a model Y or the new enyak 85 but all I here is problems people have, so for now I'll stick with me volvo which is a shame as in theroy an ev sounds good ish.
@@ricardo-iw9sq there are companies that repair Model S batteries so wouod cost less than 11k. Itll be interesting to see the longevity of the Tesla model 3 and Y battery as I've not of any failing outside warranty yet (120k)

@chargeheadsuk the degradation doesn't really tell much, no battery died of degradation. The bms dies or one of the cell goes bad, which means that you can either repair it for about 5k (not knowing how long it will last) or change it for 10k.
Why those "rims"? To save on charge? Looks bad imo

I’m getting a 22 M3 LR but was considering a 23 LR RWD, dyou think it’s wiser to go for the AWD?
If you car about performance and 4wd get a LR. If you want longevity the LFP battery will last longer 😉
The RWD is the best bang for the buck. I wouldn’t worry about the AWD vs RWD issue, I’ve had both and can’t really tell any difference in that respect.
Great video, how much do you think you could sell it for today?
£15k ish as it has full self drive on it. Its not for sale though
How much of the self driving is it allowed to do by uk law?
My understanding is (happy to be wrong) lots of the cars self drive abilities are turned off by uk law even if fitted by the factory.
@@brianiswrongyou're correct. While it's a bit of a bonus buying one that might already have it paid for by a previous owner, it's just not worth it in the UK even at £6800, it's continued to increase in America because it's more useable but I actually don't think the UK will allow it's full capability for a very long while. I believe even the summon feature is also limited to the point of pointlessness!!
If I could get a range of 450 to 500 I'd have a electric car. They are great IF you charge at home. If not too expensive.
Very few people need that kind of range

Personally I’ll stick with a ice or hybrid. Mainly due to needing decent true 4x4 capability and being in a remote area in the uk, are power network has drop outs especially in winter to the dismay of EV drivers at are nearest charges all but one having to disconnect to individualy charge 😂. And it’s not to uncommon for people to get trapped with there car in winter hear as well. But iraspective EV or ice or other all vehicles need mantanace like bearings springs and more and more often the heavier or abused they get. Same with tyres and brakes. 100k miles isn’t really high mileage maybe if you are use to nearly new / new. Car ice or even EV can last as long as it is well looked after for till the point the owner gives up or doesn’t care for it. I’m a firm believer the best option isn’t for everyone to buy EV,s is to own and run your car for at least 5y + and look after it and maybe learn how to do some basic maintenance tasks as well and build your knowledge of how to look after and budget for some wear items or surprise experience if possible. I’m currently looking for my next long term car and looking at BMW X5 45E witch has a fairly ok hybrid system and BMW age very well and even at high mileage the interior wear is some of the best condition I’ve seen and reliability BMW are know preforming around Toyota scoring. And I like the electric motor runs through the gearbox being up powerd and thru 4x4 system driving equal to ice or EV mode.
I'm an EV driver, I have a Kia E Niro which is epic. I also own a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which provides the towing I need and 4x4/AWD capability.
Im lucky enough to have home charging, so I'm firmly in the EV camp, but I agree that the infrastructure isn't ready yet for everyone to switch.
As soon as the UK is ready, we'll be told that EVs are actually running the planet and we have to switch to the next thing (probably hydrogen)..
I'm old enough to have been scammed in the great diesel scam of the early 90's: they convinced everyone to buy diesels, offered discounts, lowered the price of diesel compared to petrol, then siffed us big time!
So you’ve lost like £15K in two years on an already used car? Ouch 😂
I did make over £10k on a day old Skoda Enyaq. So I'm alright, its other people that bought during the Car market bubble, unless they went PCP of course, as they get to hand it back 🤷♂️
Basically any car at that price point bought during/right after covid lost that much.
I had a model 3 from 2020 to mid 2021, it was the worst car I've ever had, was back with tesla pretty much every month for repairs. Nothing to do with the fuel source, just the rubbish build quality.
