    How fugitive the pigment is can vary depending on the medium. Some media (especially oil) hold on the pigment and prevent fading much better than others

    This was a great review. I 've been doing the coloring book thing, but have started getting interested in doing actual artwork as well. I started looking at the Polychromos because our local art store carries them, sets and open stock as well. I actually ordered the 24 set today (they are doing online orders during the quarantine). Although who am I kidding...if I really like them, I'll go for the 120. And I agree with you, they need more light tones, and a set of paler shades would be wonderful! Holbein has that gorgeous selection of pastel shades that everyone has gone nuts over. You can buy the pastel ones in a separate set, but I saw them on Amazon for $250...they're beautiful, but I don't love them that much. A pastel set of Polychromos I probably would buy.

    Thank you for spending time with the pencils to make a really good review instead of making another "these are amazing!!!" video that doesn't help anyone.
    I have never agreed with any review more! YES to more lighter colors and also more darker colors!
    The Pablo range is way better in this regard and they work similarly to polychromos when used with pan pastels, except they're a little more opaque.

      Thanks so much for your lovely comment and for watching. My first responsibility whenever I do a review is with my subscribers . I always want to be fair and honest . Thanks for the suggestion . I may have to try those. I really have a shortage of very light pastel shades in my collection.

      Yeah, missing light colours, but looking at the Pablo colours it seems like the polychromos has much a better range in the browns, pink/purples and greens. And considering both are open stock, buying 1 set and adding with the other set is also an option. Thinking of doing that myself tbh, i've the polychromos, but thinking of adding Jade Green, Blush Pale maybe a light beige colour :)

    • @RamoArt
      @RamoArt 4 года назад +2

      @@demi3115The Pablo's come in way more browns and muted tones! Maybe the color charts aren't completely accurate, because when I draw realistic portraits or animals I find myself using more Pablo's than Polychromos for the natural colors. Especially the greens are quite unrealistic and too bright in the polychromos.

    • @nicolemartinart5819

      @@demi3115 do the pablo come in shades of light purples , light blues and very soft light greens ? I seriously need to add those colors to my collection. I own a ton of pencil brands and it seems none have what I'm looking for. I know you can mix alot but not always.

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  4 года назад +1

      @@RamoArt yea it seems only a few of the greens are very natural. Luckily though they included some smart ones in the more limited 24 set . Why does it seems so many brands and mediums always over saturate the greens ? You can always glaze a color over to tone them down some but still .

    Could you say what Polychromos are used for? Is it only cartoons or colouring pages? Are they also usable for other projects? To me they are a new medium. Thanks. You mentioned the best paper types for them so, I‘ve learned something! Thanks

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  Год назад +1

      Polychromos are suitable for fine artwork and I'd say that is their best and most appropriate application. They're lightfast and archival safe pigments, that's why you are paying top dollar. For cartoons which is reproductive work or for coloring pages you most certainly do not need a colored pencil this high of in quality or this expensive to get good results. That's not to say that if you want to work with these colored pencils for coloring pages that you can't or that there's anything wrong with that because there's not, but it's completely unnecessary. Prismacolor would be a better option IMO for coloring books.

      @@nicolemartinart5819 I‘m personally not interested in cartoons it’s that I‘ve only seen them used in this way. So, glad to hear I can/will use for more intricate works! Thanks for the reply.

    Thank you so much!

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  3 года назад +2

      Definitely prismacolor. Also I wanna kinda stress these polychromos are a harder pencil so they build up much slower and require more hand strength. They hurt me to use a lot of the time. Prismacolor are nice and soft . Vibrant . Affordable.

    I own this set, I bought them for personal use but I have seen someone's lightfast results and unfortunately it seems like they aren't as lightfast as they claim. Other than that, I really like their quality control, texture and how many layers you can build with these.

      Professional buyers won't expose a drawing to direct sunlight for months. Nothing lasts forever in bad conditions.

    • @suhailali7497
      @suhailali7497 10 месяцев назад

      @@fontainerouge I know, but if they claim that their pencils are lightfast and homemade lightfast tests from artists show poor results in comparison with other professional brands, then it's a reason for concern and scepticism towards their claims.
      They also refuse to provide pigment information, which is something that other brands don't do.

    • @fontainerouge
      @fontainerouge 10 месяцев назад

      @@suhailali7497 Light is measured in lux. Lightfastness measurements use quantity of lux against number of hours of exposure. 500 lux (an average house lamp) for 100 hours equals 1 hour in sunlight (between 50 000 & 100 000 lux). So, if they don't measure light with a luxmeter & variations during the day, it does not mean anything (though manufacturers probably classify their products in the most advantageous way if close to the limit in a given category).

    Fantastic review. Really helpful. I'm looking at Holbien too because of the Holbien but leaning towards Polychromos. What would you recommend for colouring? Do you keep your 120 pencils in their tin?

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment . Honestly for coloring I'd reccomend the prismacolor premier colored pencils . They are very soft and creamy . Pigmented and blend well with ease . And at just a fraction of the cost of these more professional pencils which are really not necessary to get good results in colouring books. The real difference is the polychromos pencils are made with higher quality pigments to ensure light fastness and archival qualities to fine art work to achieve longevity. Also they are harder cores making fine details in realism easier but may tire out your hand and may not be comfortable for long colouring sessions . Hope this helps 🙂
