Thank you to the entire Ape Initiative team for making this project possible.
Ape Initiative is the only research facility in the world dedicated to the study and conservation of bonobos. It is a federally-recognized non-profit 501(c)(3) and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as a Certified Related Facility. Filming within Ape Initiative was done with professional supervision at all times.
Bonobos are very endangered in the wild, with only around 15,000 left - which is in large part due to the pet trade. In this video, you see Kanzi engaging in human activities as part of his daily enrichment, but Kanzi is by no means a pet at Ape Initiative.
⚠️ It is important to remember that bonobos and all other primates are NOT pets.
Minecraft (and any other touchscreen game) is one of many enrichment activities that Kanzi can choose to participate in to have fun and make his day more interesting. The door is always open, so he can choose when to start and stop playing.

That’s exactly what I thought! A twitch stream like that would blow up and garner TONS of donations in a VERY short amount of time, especially when people are made aware of what the money will be used for. It would be groundbreaking, and would probably be the quickest and easiest fundraising that they’ve ever done. They desperately NEED to do this and take advantage of the opportunity and that has just presented itself right now while they already have the attention of millions of people.

Honestly he's having normal gamer rage I think Kanzi has a cooler head and attitude than most people cuz he understands that he can just go take a break.
Humans make ape noises too, listen carefully to the crowd when a fight breaks out, or when a large group of people get scared and run away, we literally sound like chips just with a slightly lower pitch. Humans are wild animals too, and we are also the most dangerous.

You know how some games show you icons on the edge of the screen for things that are off-screen? kinda like a direction indicator. It might help Kanzi to have a green button/bar on the side of the screen that points in the direction of the next target when there is no target on screen. Then he might learn to click the edges of the screen to spin if he does not see any targets.
Eating a bowl of peanuts and playing videogames, he's learned everything there is to know about being a H. sapien.
Recreate Kanzi`s real life home in Minecraft and see if he recognises it as being the same place!

This is incredible! It's cool because we're so closely related to bonobos that we can easily understand each other's body language and facial expressions. I wonder if there is a way to tell whether he's perceiving the screen as three-dimensional space where he can move around (because he's clearly 'navigating'), or if he's seeing it as two-dimensional and he's just manipulating the colors and shapes?

i did research in hs on the foraging habits of these bonobos back when i lived in Des Moines. I was assigned Teco and Clara. Teco was so boisterous and Clara always pressed her belly against the glass for you to rub. Kanzi always asked for grapes😭❤️

The only issue with that would be the ape leaving the game to do his own thing. And it wouldn't be very humane if they were to make him sit there playing for an hour or so. Maybe if they transitioned between him playing doing ape things and playing the game it'd work but who knows.

Back in 2019 I got to visit Kanzi along with other Iowa State University students. I brought him some pine needles because I heard he liked them and I told him about it. He got excited then used his lexigram to tell me to get him orange juice. I told him I couldn't so he then used his lexigram as well as pointing behind me to give me directions on where to get the orange juice. He understood I could bring him stuff but didn't quite understand that I was not allowed to bring him orange juice. He then kept touching the lexigram for "chase" and patting himself then pointing to me, so we played "chase". We would stand on opposite sides then run and tackle the glass in the middle. He got really hyped about it. It was super fun. Love my boi Kanzi

Oh my stars, Kanzi had the most old school gamer rage moment, something we've all experienced: not being able to turn around and go back in a game! This is so wholesome and cool!
If there is a part 3 (since part 2 is already out) make an environment that he can just explore and turn around in a non-linear fashion and collect loot. Also maybe give him an alternately color coded "place button" alongside the "break button" and teach him how to place blocks, maybe to fill holes in a house or a bridge.
They need to add Bonobos into Minecraft as a Mob to always remember Kanzi's momentous achievements!

You should teach Kanzi how to use a joystick for movement. Kanzi seems to understand the shape and form of the environment but is limited in his range of movement. Now that he understands the game you could teach him a joystick starting with forward and then adding lateral and backwards movement

humans aren't much different from bonobos when it comes to gaming. We're both motivated by rewards to perform certain tasks and complete objectives, the only difference being the actual substance of the reward. In Minecraft, Kanzi's reward for mining diamonds is more instant and more primal (food), while our reward for mining diamonds is more delayed and relevant to the game (eg; being able to use mined diamonds to craft tools and other things). Kinda crazy
Still chemicals in our brains like dopamine
Marine biologists use this same concept with dolphins too actually. There's a video that shows dolphins using echo location to "point" at a specific shape that's being projected onto the wall that rewards them with a particular fish depending on which shape they choose.

Apes freak me out and fascinate me at the same time, the way Kanzi's hand touches the screen with two fingers like we do is amazing.
i have a mild phobia of apes and large monkeys but kanzi never rlly set it off for some reason! i was just like hell yeah gamer youre doing amazing! i think part of it was that he always looked so calm and like he was enjoying himself :] i loved to see/hear that he gets lots of mental and physical stimulation and health, this was such a fascinating and fun video to watch.
The fact that Kanzi is actually navigating and interacting with this complex virtual 3D environment is mind-blowing!

If you approach the idea of teaching Kanzi how to attack mobs, what might be an interesting way to do so is by having the mobs in the way of his treats. I think it is important that the way to approach mobs is not through punishment, but through the suspension of reward. For example, punishing Kanzi for dying would cause unnecessary stress and frustration, but if Kanzi instead sees it as an obstacle to get to his treat, he may be less frustrated. This might be able to be done in two ways: one, the mobs are merely there with barrier blocks, and Kanzi must kill the mob to proceed; two, you use a mob like a zombie who, if Kanzi gets to close, attacks him. There would be no punishment, only the prevention of him accessing treats. Take in mind I am not a scientist or anything like that, but it just seemed like an interesting idea.

I believe he got an instant treat for respawning after the tnt trap which Im glad didn't even phase him. An absolute solid job though on his part using a touchscreen lol

I think they somewhat skipped over the fact that Kanzi had two choices at the split path, saw 2 rewards, got 1 and went back to get the other.
