What Is the Laity’s Role in Evangelization?

  • Friends, at the Sharing the Church’s Story Conference in London, I reflected on the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and how these counsels can be lived out by the laity. Vatican II wanted great Catholic parents, great Catholic lawyers, great Catholic politicians, great Catholic writers and journalists, great Catholic business leaders, great Catholic bankers and investors, and more living their faith vibrantly and publicly. How do we accomplish that? By living out the evangelical counsels.

As I was listening to you a message came on my cell and it was a message about my High School thanking Jason Evert from the Chastity Project who came to speak to students in grades 7 -12 . I am praying one day you will return to the Franciscan University here and I with many others will be able to hear you in person.

    Thank you Bishop Barron.
I think of the parable of the prodigal son, the father with the two sons who are both actually lost in themselves, one goes away taking for himself his inheritance and squanders everything, the other works like a slave without knowing or loving his father. The father in the end says everything he has is theirs already, all he wants is their love and mercy, alongside obedience.
Also the parable of the good Samaritan, where a priest and a Levite walk pass a dying man, except for the Samaritan stranger who gives a lot to heal the man.
It's not so much about what we think is good for God or what's good for ourselves, but the actually abundant good God has already entrusted us so that we can be with Him and others in His kingdom. It's up to us if we want to be with God in eternity. Being grateful in every situation is the key to open up the sluice gate of abundant graces.

I first saw Bishop Barron (then Fr. Barron) on EWTN, almost twenty years ago, saying he "loved John Lennon." And I've been hooked ever since. I really can't put it into words. It's like the feeling of listening to the Beatles. Only it really lifts up my heart even higher. So grateful to God for Bishop Barron, and I love the Church!

Thank you too, Bishop, for bringing to mind the excellent reminder about charity through the Church Jesus built in 33 A.D. As such charity is the result of our faith and hope in God, and among other things, conveys our thankfulness to Him for the seven Sacraments He instituted within His one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church in order that we might receive His life-giving Body and Blood worthily, as He said we must do to have life in us.

I believe the Holy Spirit opens the door wide to include the laity in full participation of the Church in Vatican II. We are all called to holiness, not just the clergy, to bring Christ to our work and family environment. Besides attending Holy Mass regularly, I believe in the importance of knowing the Catechism by actively participating in the religious education program. I believe in being a witness for Christ by sharing conversion testimony like the Samaritan woman at the well. Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses, according to Pope Paul VI.

We need to unite all Catholics so the transcendental drives all cultures strive for (good truth and beauty) can be heard and seen in our political structures. Voters are the ones that place representatives in DC. I cant for one minute believe if all catholics understood Bishop's teachings and came together as a single voice that we would have current mess we have in DC.

I was for awhile from time to time in the 'moral dilemma' when I was being encouraged to no longer be among the laity by becoming a priest/minister too more than once while I was continued in being expected at the same time to facilitate unity among
Christians. It was then over time that I realized no longer people pleasing was so very important. Because none of us among the laity could accomplish anything while only people pleasing. While being under the gun too.

Bishop, first thank you for spreading the Word. I'm grateful for the clarity you bring to our Catholic faith. On the subject of chastity, could you please elaborate how the sacrament of marriage relates to chastity AND how to evangelize to young adults who are so influenced by mass media? In other words, I'm imagining, "Can't I truly love (will the good of another) outside the sacrament of marriage?"

It is interesting that Bishop Barron cites Pope Leo XIII as an expert on poverty. It is acknowledged that as Pope he led an austere and simple life and applied himself diligently to the problems of church government. However, during his pontifcate he enjoyed an annual income of about 400,00 pounds and after death left an estate valued at over one million pounds. Another aspect of Leo's character was his contempt for the lowly. As Pope he had the use of a personal carriage, and to the coachman who served him faithfully for 25 years he never addressed a word. In Rerum Novarum Leo stated that workers were entitled to a "living wage" but refused all requests to provide an actual definition.

You point of dumbing down Catholicism was real in the 90’s. Speaking up, even gently was answered with fury especially by the clergy.

Now I understand why I have never met a Catholic evangelist in my life: The Second Vatican Council apparently expected the laity to evangelize (which they do not do) and the clergy seemingly considered itself off the hook. Thank you Bishop Barron for being the only Catholic member of the clergy (who I know at least) who actually evangelizes.

There’s many clergy who do, but are we listening? Father Mike might be the most famous online today. If you’ve never listened to Life is Worth Living by Ven. Fulton Sheen, it’s worth gifting to anyone.
There’s many laity who do. Try Edward Sri, or Dr. Scott Hahn, or Brant Pitre (they speak and write).
Or just read the Saints, clergy or laity.

Thank you, Bishop! Maybe the synod or whatever it's called can define the different kinds of relationships there are. Abraham called the rich man who wasn't in Heaven, "child". "Brethren" is one word. "Friends" another. Yet, please emphasize that yes, there are boundaries. Abraham called the permanent one between him and the rich man a "chasm". What is the one called here? Propriety? As someone who rates others (or, used to) as brother/ uncle/ grandmother/ child/etc, this is the measure i used. Some do not automatically see this, and use the eyes of their mind differently. That we realize that some exist who live that way is difficult enough, but once their wickedness is imposed, sometimes the only comfort is realizing that God's got an invisible army of angels. That said, some well-defined terminology would be very helpful imo. Too, maybe the eyes of my mind should learn to understand that, just because i think (or, used to think) of whomevers as being sincerely friendly and kind without ulterior motives...uhm yeah right. Guess that's a better-late- than- never lesson to have learned. God does say it's Him first. Not anyone or anything else. God is infinite and knows everything which IS actually incredibly comforting! And, thanks again for using your pearls of time to continue to teach us God's wonderfully helpful lessons!

Sexuality under the discipline of love...for some of us this isn't a discipline, it is the only way. The problem is you can be in a relationship before you find this out, and everyone does not grow up with a sense of the sacred. One can be naive about the world for a long time given the religious life is quite intellectual as you say, and we are from such broad church experiences within the catholic church, and then the larger society.

Another still unreceived and unrealized Vatican II teaching on the laity is the common priesthood of the faithful. It is still unthinkable for the laity to think of themselves as priests by virtue of baptism. The term priest is still used exclusively to refer to what is supposed to be rightly called as presbyters. This situation perpetuates the continued disempowerment of the laity in terms of fully tapping their exercise of priesthood in the church that is as both equally and differently with the presbyters in the priestly, prophetic, and royal service in the church and the world.
