For all the English people, in the French chorus, they say: "Et c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime, s'aime, s'aime" And that's how we love, love, love " C'est comme ça qu'on consomme, 'somme 'somme" That's how we buy, buy, buy. But Stromae is so a genius that, in French the "That's how we buy" the "buy" that is "consomme" in French, the last two syllables ("somme") continues to echoes, and "somme" also means "are". Yeah being leftovers. It's kinda sad to see all these people sharing a constant flow of pictures on Twitter or Instagram just by the impression that it makes their life more interesting. I'm a computer scientist and a huge gamer, but I've taken a huge step back from taking pictures, I'd rather live the moment than immortalize something I've not lived fully anyway. Social networks have completely overstepped their purpose, and it's not even on them, it's on their users. The technology itself isn't bad and makes some good thing (sharing with distant relatives, organizing and keping up to date with news on what you like) but people have made it integral to their life to the point it might as well be stitched to them. There's also the reaction to the little girl that is interesting. At the beginning she's out of the system, she doesn't have an account or a device, and no care is given to her by the "social bird", she doesn't deserve to be even considered.

Nobody’s talking about the fact that this is originally from an opera, called Carmen by Georges Bizet and the song is (wonderfully) remixed from this opera ? The original music is also mesmerizing ✨
I KNEW it sounded like that song!! I was like ‘did stromae use a sample from that old opera song? (I didnt know it was called Carmen until I just searched)

Stromae is not a singer, he is an artist. He talks about real problems of the world and the humans. He leads his people by telling the truth by his art. Such a genius. Belgian people should know the value of him more. Greetings from Turkey to Stromae and French&Belgian people.
I still remember that I was so traumatized when I first watched this MV maybe not understanding the true message of the MV at that time, but now I watch this 7 years later, the power that social media has and how people easily became slaves to social media is so true. This MV is well made even the little detail that the bird came to that little girl. This MV alert the danger of social media can happen to anybody with any age.
Same...I watched it when I was in 6th grade. I got the message almost vaguely but not quite. Now that I'm older I understand to the full extent what Stromae expressed in the song
I was in like 3rd grade when this MV came out and they played it for us at assemble and I still get shivers when I hear the line about dying like rats, and the more I think about it it actually did form part of how I think about social media, they just played it cause it was a french school and Stromae was trending at the time but it has resonated through my brain for the past 9 years

L’offre et la demande pour unique et seule loi Prends garde à toi "Mais j’en connais déjà les dangers, moi J’ai gardé mon ticket et, s’il le faut, j’vais l’échanger, moi Prends garde à toi Et, s’il le faut, j’irai m’venger moi Cet oiseau d’malheur, j’le mets en cage J’le fais chanter, moi" [Refrain] Prends garde à toi Si tu t’aimes Garde à moi Si je m’aime Garde à nous, garde à eux, garde à vous Et puis chacun pour soi Et c’est comme ça qu’on s’aime, s’aime, s’aime, s’aime Comme ça, consomme, somme, somme, somme, somme Et c’est comme ça qu’on s’aime, s’aime, s’aime, s’aime Comme ça, consomme, somme, somme, somme, somme Et c’est comme ça qu’on s’aime, s’aime, s’aime, s’aime Comme ça consomme, somme, somme, somme, somme Et c’est comme ça qu’on s’aime, s’aime, s’aime, s’aime Comme ça consomme, somme, somme, somme, somme [Outro] Un jour t’achètes, un jour tu aimes Un jour tu jettes, mais un jour tu payes Un jour tu verras, on s’aimera Mais avant on crèvera tous, comme des rats
This song is genius in so many ways : - It's called carmen because the main melody is sampled from "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from the theatre play "Carmen". - It revolves around birds not only because of Twitter but also because the original song translates to "Love is a rebel bird". - The cry of the bird emulates Twitter notifications. - The hook is "Et c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime, et c'est comme ça consomme". It translates poorly in English but it's a really clever pun. - The clip is in sync with the beat of the song. I love Stromae. Sérieux je l'adore, j'ai hâte à son prochain album (oui je commence à parler français en plein milieu)

In french "consomme" or "consommation" has many meanings, and I understand that he jokes with the meanings during the song and the video. He is talking about love and in this situation "consommation" means how people relate to each other. He says that love is a son of the relationship, depends on what kind of relationship we have, love is builded by choices day by day. It's like in the offert and demand law - when somebody don't give himself to the relationship the love of the other ends. But "consomme" can mean also "to use”, so he links social medias and relationships; and can mean also "to buy", so he links the song with the consumption habits; and can mean “to end little by litte” like something being absorbed. It's possible analyzing the song from any of these points...
Stromae's music is like that poem your Literature teacher told you to dissect. A phrase can have a lot of intended meaning based on literal words, societal context, historical context, etc.
"consomme" is even "consume", like consuming things or relationships or people, burning them. And love is still a kind of consume, mostly the love for yourself. One of the meanings is that Twitter and the socials are creating a mass of self-lovers that consume themselves (I think).
Oh, I thought he was trying to get in a jab at capitalism. I'll cut some slack then. Twitter is a consumer product. Power users don't play with censored platforms and Silly Cunt Valley corporate culture reflects this. They have posters banning the use of the word user. More stitches means less riches, right? Just throw it away and buy a new one instead of fixing it or building things to last in the first place. Disgusting.
9 years later, i just understood the message he was trying to share, we did not got it at the time, we did not see the evil hidden in the shape of social media. i can write about this for hours but the animation said everything. to everyone reading, get back to reality, sleep early wake up early eat healthy reduce your time screen as much as possible, go visit someone you love, don't facetime him, take a piece of paper and write don't use notes, do any kind of sports, eat healthy, work hard , build a family, and keep everything PRIVATE, not everybody will wish good for you...
I was looking for French music to help passive learning and came across Stromae. Out of any artists I've ever heard and seen in any language, Stromae is one of the greatest. So glad I found him.

I’ll never forget this really popular and smart Tumblr user criticizing this song for being corny and simplifying it as “old person says not to use phone a lot just like every other old person, but really they don’t get that it’s just not that serious.” I felt so silly for liking this song at the time and felt corny for thinking this was a deep message… now in 2024 the message here is still so relevant. It was always a deep and important message.
Yes but the translation French to english for this song is quite impossible ! There are more details in french with the words plays that the english translation can't reproduce
***** If you agree with me, don't contradict me. "I don't think it's about" "But I agree that the translation isn't that great"...Like ,shut the fuck up and stop commenting just because you can.
I really like that between 0:50 and 1:15 he is doing these activities alone, including his own birthday. Even though his followers were increasing. I think what the artist was trying to show was that even though your followers are growing and you feel like you have become popular, they are not really your friends.
i always loved stromae as one of my favourite french singers and this was the best thing ever. the way he depicted everything and hopefully made people realise that social media destroys you , makes you alone and then kills you. it is not only eye-opening but terrifyingly accurate
The song is great but can we also admire the Music Video. It's so creative and I love how there are many hidden meanings scattered in the video that symbolise something. It perfectly depicts how social impact actually impacts our lives slowly. There are many artists who can make a great song, but Stromae is just unique. He adds so many elements to all his songs. Each time, the ideas he comes up with are just so out of the box. He never fails to amaze me.
I remember watching this almost a decade ago and it gave me chills. Now all these years later, the message is even more relevant. Such a great social commentary.
Someone remarked somewhere that he is the Mozart of today. Sometimes I want to agree. His music is complex yet refined. His music carries message, yet is universal across languages. At least in enjoyment. Either way, he is a blessing to the Music of today.
yes i do realize that. But the social media im talking bout is where you gain followers with your selfies and just always obssessed with having good angles and lightning for one selfie to get like what?100 likes. Okay cool, like seriously whats the point of all this? I do have a youtube account obviously but where do you see a selfie exactly lol
It talks about how we will put ourselves out there and do things that end up on the Internet that makes us popular for only a little while. So we find anything else to make us popular which will get us in some drama and ultimately forgotten
If you really pay attention to the video, you can learn a lot. The bird eating his food symbolizes that society forgets to even eat, instead choosing to use social media. The bird on his back shows that Twitter weighs us down. The bird being between the two shows that it drives a wedge between us and our loved ones. The bird picking him up and carrying him on his back shows us that Twitter, or social media, has finally taken complete control over his life, to the point that he cares about literally nothing, even as it drives him into hell. Finally, his love tries to save him by reaching out to him, but she is unable to convince him to give up social media, and is crushed. Likely, she is crushed emotionally, rather than by a giant twitter bird, but the point remains the same. The video tells just as important a story as the song, and even without it, is still a perfectly comprehensible work on its own.
true its smooth af but we are paying attention on the meaning of a big ass bird eating humans then pooping them right afterwards what kind of bird is that
It adds a lot to the general deepness of this song that the melody is just like the melody in "Habanera", an aria from Carmen, which is an opera about being seduced by a lover who ultimately destroys and abandons you.
Holy shit, that's cool. Crazy how true the song's message is and how we get caught up in something so bad for us we don't realise how detrimental it is until it's killed us.
I also love how he diverges from the original melody frequently, which gives a feeling of a creation that's been copied, shared, memed, re-memed, and this is just one of its many iterations. If that wasn't intentional, I'd be surprised.
Et dire qu'il y a 6 ans j'écoutais cette chanson en m'embiançant dessus sans la comprendre. En grandissant on se rend compte que c'est non seulement ultra triste, mais une triste réalité. Très bonne chanson

This song is genius in so many ways :
- It's called carmen because the main melody is sampled from "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from the theatre play "Carmen".

Obviously..
Disgusting.
Im trying to learn french this year and I love Stromae, thx for explaning that part. Curiosity: in Brazil 'consume' have all thats meanings as well
9 years later, i just understood the message he was trying to share, we did not got it at the time, we did not see the evil hidden in the shape of social media. i can write about this for hours but the animation said everything.
to everyone reading, get back to reality, sleep early wake up early eat healthy reduce your time screen as much as possible, go visit someone you love, don't facetime him, take a piece of paper and write don't use notes, do any kind of sports, eat healthy, work hard , build a family, and keep everything PRIVATE, not everybody will wish good for you...
I was looking for French music to help passive learning and came across Stromae. Out of any artists I've ever heard and seen in any language, Stromae is one of the greatest. So glad I found him.

I also love how he diverges from the original melody frequently, which gives a feeling of a creation that's been copied, shared, memed, re-memed, and this is just one of its many iterations. If that wasn't intentional, I'd be surprised.
American music - drugs, love.....
French music - life
He is belgian
that's not the point
Jean Poli he said "french music", that means "chanson française", and Stromae sings in French. We all know where he is from.
Exactly. Music here in U.S. Is horrible.
Brayden Vanmilligan Music around the world is horrible, but sometimes art like this comes up

This aged like fine wine
Now we need the sequel with an evil X letter
Everybody gangsta till the blue bird steps on ya girl.

I love this song.:( it reminds me when I was in 6th grade learning French and almost 80% of our school picked Spanish. I’m so happy I learned French is one of the most beautiful languages of the world. Lovely songs and lovely memories of being a child

Toujours présent !

Toujours 😊
Ouèche
Oui toujours
Stromae should be popular here in America, his music isn't trash
Jasmine Chapman I guess that's the reason he's not popular in America lol
Rolo FIIIRREEEE 🔥🔥🔥🔥😂😂😂😂 YOU'RE SAVAGE 😂😂
Ahah Hello Fat Burger's eaters !
Yoann le meur What type-a meth you taking? Lmao
Jasmine Chapman I know, but I feel like because it's in french most Americans would rather ridicule the song then appreciate it.

the meaning is don't let social media consume you, the big grumpy bird in the end represents that social media isn't doing anything for you you're just feeding the twitter bird your time, your life and your money
