    I don't think Tavares is to blame at all. Guy is putting up the points and he shows up most games. In fact, the problem isn't with any of the 4 of them, individually. The real problem is that these 4 as a unit can't get it done. It's not working, so they need to be broken up. Dump 2 and find some new forwards that can get the chemistry going, because right now, there isn't any.

      Those 4 dominated Tampa.
      Their series with Florida was far closer than a 5 game 'beatdown' the way some Leafs fans suggest it was.
      The issue really isn't the Core 4.
      It's that their grit players are one dimensional, their goalies are susceptible to inconsistent defensive play, and their offense is overly concerned with making TikTok highlight reels.

      @nolankuffner3573 last 5 years they have tried everything to round out the team. Speedy guys, big guys, experienced guys, pests, different coaching staff, different goalies. It hasn't worked. And if youre gonna say its because they didnt get the right pieces, well thats cause they cant pay for the right pieces. I used to think like you, they just need to find the right mix, but nothing has worked. Its time to at least try something new.

      @@nolankuffner3573Matthews, JT and Marner dominated Tampa? Matthews yeah, 9 points 6 games. But then 2 assists in the entire Florida series, and did nothing but be a liability in the last 3 games. Marner dominated also against Tampa, but then had 3 points in the Florida series, and was a defensive liability also (Selke finalist btw). JT, aside from the hat trick in game 2 versus Tampa, was absolutely horrendous all playoffs, 7 goals being solely on his shoulders alone. Nylander was the only guy who tried the entire playoffs, regardless of his team or their situation.
      Leafs fans seem to forget that their star players didn’t show up in the second round, and never have in decades. But when your team parties so hard that the team forgets how to play hockey, it’s understandable.

    The worst part is it feels like they tried to rush a young team (that already had Kadri) into winning by signing Tavares when they could have built for a sustainable future. But I guess Leaf’s brass thinks never having LW’s in your top 6 or any depth and losing players like Nylander in their prime is cool. Sucks for Leafs fans because it’s not like they would have done much worse if they were patient and never got JT.

      Those LW's like Hyman who was there and is now a key player on the Oilers? Most teams only have two superstars on a top line. The Leafs have 3-4 on their top two lines. It's other parts of the lineup and probably the coach that has been the issue as much as the forwards.

      @@markbirtchnell2249 yes, those LW's like Hyman who they couldn't afford to keep or Bunting who was a shot in the dark and luckily completely out performed his contract. Outperformed it to the point the Leafs couldn't afford him. It's also those LW's like Dennis Malgin, a career AHLer, who was the 2LW at the start of last year because they had no one else before they had a revolving door of different guys fill that spot. My point isn't that the LW's have always sucked, it's that there isn't any stability. They have only had a consistent top 4, not a true top 6 year after year. Which comes down to paying guys like Tavares 11 million to be on the second line to give production similar to a Dylan Larkin who the Wings just gave an 8 million dollar contract to be their 1C. Should Tavares be paid more than Larkin? I guess, but that doesn't change the fact they put up similar numbers and one teams gets that production for like 3 million cheaper. So the Leafs are paying more for what other teams get for less. So you get to make points like Hyman is amazing for the Oilers. Exactly, they couldn't afford to keep him in a Leafs uniform.

      @@nickperkowski2407 I don't think many teams in the league have a group that sees no ins/outs. 2/3 of the league are right at the cap and every team has to move pieces around and decide which players are worth keeping. The Leafs make the call that Marner/Nylander are worth it over having 2x Hyman or whoever.
      Just look at the players Tampa have had to let walk recently. Or Kadri walking away from Colorado. I'm sure they wanted to keep everybody together but its not possible in today's NHL. The difference is the Leafs haven't won yet. If they do then the narrative falls away.

    • @nickperkowski2407
      @nickperkowski2407 10 месяцев назад

      @@markbirtchnell2249 of course no team is the same year after year and many teams are up against the cap because the cap hasn’t gone up. That affects the leafs too, but I don’t think the leafs situation is similar. The Avalanche didn’t resign Kadri because Kadri was in his 30’s, coming off a career year he was unlikely to maintain, looking for a raise after getting 4.5 mil the last few years. The Avs knew they had higher priorities like paying MacKinnon. Or look at the Wings and Bruins not resigning Bertuzzi. He was asking for too much by both teams’ estimation. Whether it was Bertuzzi, Kadri or say like Killorn from Tampa, they were let go because they were looking to sign for too much money. That’s an example of teams avoiding the situation the Leafs have with Tavares where they have a good player, who doesn’t justify his value to the team. Again, Tavares is giving Larkin production, which is great, but not 11 million great. It might even be more like Nugent-Hopkins at 5 mil since both RNH and JT are second liners and have been getting half their points on the pp. But my point is JT contract has been a big problem for filling out the roster (top 6 lw being one example) that the leafs never needed to give themselves to begin with. They signed him expecting Matthews to both be the better player and play 1C. Tavares was signed as an expected eventual backup. The only way to justify that is if Tavares is lights out. He hasn’t been, he’s been Larkin or Nugent-Hopkins good. That’s not good enough for what the Leafs have been paying him. Why pick on Tavares and not the other 10 mil+ guys? Because Tavares put a young team in a win now mode before they were ready, he’s a luxury at 2c that isn’t outperforming players making a lot less than him, and he’s the clear odd man out compared to the younger Matthews and Marner. So yeah other teams make dumb moves too and are up against the cap, but the leafs are still 2.9 million above the cap after LTIR. And will have to resign or replace Bertuzzi, Domi, and possibly Nylander next year while Tavares will still be there. Somethings gotta give and Tavares makes most sense. Because like you said Marner and Nylander might be worth 2x Hymans, but Tavares doesn’t seem like that and he’s helped prevent keeping both Hyman and Nylander.

    The problem with JT is not that he's a bad player. The problem is that he's paid like a superstar when he's not one. Like Darnell Nurse in Edmonton, his cap hit is around $2-3M higher than it should be, and when you look at the kind of 3rd line upgrades you could get with $3M dollars, it makes sense to be a little upset.

      They weren't even soft in this year's playoffs. There was something of a lack of intensity in round 2 which could be described as a form of softness or lack of compete but wasn't traditional softness. I wouldn't make excuses for them but I wonder how much the burden of winning round 1 after so long caused a bit of a let-down in round 2. I think that when Shanahan got hired and they started making big moves, either good or bad, it showed us that they were willing to make an serious commitment to win. It really got everyone excited. Now, years later, we are coming off that high as none of those moves panned out and we are back to the 'MID' level of performance. Now the team is just a meme. Over the last 55 years, we have changed just about every aspect of the team and its culture, hell even the arena has changed and still nothing to show for it. For me I'm tired of losing and tired of being humiliated. I wont blame Tavares or anyone else specially, but I can definitely understand the Toronto fans trying to figure out why we can't win. You know the difference?
      There are more than 6 teams 😂
      Seriously though, being a top 8 of 32 (the top 25%) really isn't as horrible as Leafs fans act like it is.
      How many repeat champions have there been that haven't been considered GOAT type teams?
      Very few.
      The 70s Flyers. The 80s Islanders and Oilers. The 90s Penguins and Red Wings. The 2000s Avalanche. The 2010s Blackhawks and Lightning.
      The fact is, there have been few true dominant franchises for the full breadth of those 55 years, and that's not half of the teams to win the Cup.
      The fact of the matter is, whether Leafs fans want to accept it or not, the playoffs are a second season for two reasons.
      One: those big contracts? That's paid out by the end of the season.
      They don't suddenly make less per game because they made the playoffs. That extra just doesn't count against the salary cap. So they are earning that money. It's divided between 82 regular season games.
      The second part of it is pretty easy to understand.
      If you play Auston Matthews today and Sidney Crosby tomorrow, chances are pretty high Matthews has a better game than if you're playing him 6 times in a row and you can learn his patterns and disrupt his game.
      It's always strange to me when people are surprised goalies (generally more intelligent than the jocks who play forward 😂) can go on these big runs when their job is basically trigonometry at 30mph.

    Fab 4 are built for the regular season when play is 80%, not the playoffs. They don't do well at the NHL Playoff Hockey level, where competitiveness requires twice the effort like getting your face smashed in, bones cracked and knuckles busted on every shift. They are pretty to look at though.

    The problem isn't Tavares the player. In a vacuum his contract is decent. He's a top tier C in the league making $11M AAV (which is top tier money). He's also basically a point per game playing, so it's not like they are paying him top tier money and he is only giving you 50 points a year. The Leafs issue is they have too many "top tier" players (in terms of AAV). You typically get 1, maybe 2 people making over $10M AAV. The Leafs have 3 (and have had 3 for several years now) and with Nylander asking for $10M+, that would make 4. The construction of the team with so many expensive players means there isn't enough money to fill out the roster with all the support players. That is the Leafs issue and why they shouldn't have got Tavares when they did. One of challenges in the league is top quality young players always got their ELC for 3 years, then did a decent bridge deal, then hit the jackpot with their big money deal when they established they were worth it. That doesn't really happen as much now. Top young players want their big money deals after their ELC is done. The bridge deals are essentially gone, and that makes constructing a team in a cap environment extremely difficult. The cap needs to go, or if you want to keep it, make it a luxury tax. If you spend over the max cap, the team pays a 100% tax and use that to distribute to the bottom teams. But honestly, the cap shouldn't exist. It prevents teams for keeping the high quality players that make franchises and possibly short lived dynasties.

      What a silly argument. Get rid of the only thing that makes the league competitive? Who want some Saudi or Russian Oligarch to come in and own a team - to come in and buy McDavid, Leon, Matthews, Marner and MacKinnon? The salary cap is essential. A punitive luxury tax for serial abusers? Maybe that would work... The NBA luxury tax is pretty stiff... I agree with your history lesson on the change in the bridge contracts etc.

  • @johndesousa7379
    @johndesousa7379 10 месяцев назад +2

    Nothing wrong with the play of the core 4 but 37 million of the Cap for 4 players is taking away from the rest of the team. The defensive core is always sub standard because they can't spend the money. Vegas has a much better balanced team. They had just 2 forwards over 9 million and 5 players in the 4 to 6 million range with two of them on defense. They also have an elite defenseman at 8.8 million. Leafs had 4 forwards at 7 million or higher and only 2 defenseman at 5 million or higher. They only had 1 player between the 4 to 6 million range. Leafs have to improve the bottom half of the team but with Mathews asking for 13. 5 million and Nylander asking for 10 million in the following contract it will not happen if they get it. Time for Treliving to test out there loyalty. I think he will trade Nylander to improve the defense. 3 of the core 4 have No Move Clause so they can't be traded. Nylander is the only one that can be traded. Taveres has 2 seasons left and will most likely be put on a 35+ contract so the cap hit will be much less. I think the Leafs will have the best chance of winning the cup in 3 years.

  • @mpreuss2
    @mpreuss2 10 месяцев назад +1

    With his production and playing 2C, that contract is bad. He’s getting paid more than 1C’s and not putting up the numbers as those 1C’s. The only thing that can redeem this contract is winning a Cup. Toronto will likely be better off not having Dubas around and they might be able to get out from this contract and keep the other three. Even if JT got paid $3mil less per year then they could afford a few more pieces, maybe even stabilize the defense.
    My point is that this contract, somewhat combined with the other three, is screwing over the rest of the team at depth roles.

    As a Sens fan I'm glad that Giroux came home. At age 35 he had a career high 35 goals and 79 points (his 5th most), and he signed for 3 years at $6.5M. He's great for the locker room and happy to be back closer to home. I agree that JT takes a lot of heat while still putting up pretty solid numbers and being a leader in the room. That being said, he wasn't worth the $11M when he first signed the contract in my opinion. He came home and basically helped handcuff his team from succeeding. Hindsight is 20/20, but his contract was always a problem and will only help delay the Leafs from winning a cup for the next 2 years. Will the core 4 stay together or break apart in the next couple of years? I'm interested to see. All that being said, Toronto will have a good regular season and make the playoffs this season. The battles of Ontario will be really good this year too, can't wait. Cheers

    Tavares is not my problem with this team. He's a PPG player, wins draws, and plays both sides of the puck. Honestly he reminds me of Mats Sundin, really good player but can't seem to get the team over the hump/curse/etc... to help them win it all.
    My bigger issue has been with Matthews. He makes more than Tavares, is supposed to be a generational player, and other than one 60 goal season, has he been exceptional? He is very good don't get me wrong, 40 goals a season is nothing to sneeze at. He's had a few decent playoff series, but where is a domination type playoff run? Where he's just clearly the best player on either team. He wants to be one of the highest paid in the game, but I'd argue that during the Tampa series, Kucherov, Marner, and even Reilly were better. He was still productive but he certainly didn't dominate.
    You can look back and think of Crosby, Kane, MacKinnon, Quick, Kucherov, Vasilevski.... guys who were simply the best during a playoff run. The Leafs haven't had a guy like that since Gilmour, not even Sundin was that guy.

    A couple years back his contract felt a lot worse when he was running into some injury issues in back to back seasons. But this last season he played pretty well I thought. It's still a bit rich at 11 million AAV, probably shouldn't be quite that high. He's a point a game player, but generally you gotta be a bit better than point a game to get into the 11+ bracket, especially at the time they signed the deal. But unfortunately thats also the premium you end up paying trying to find top talent in free agency. But we should get a similar couple more years out of him at 32. The contract should be ending right before he really hits his career downstroke. And who knows, maybe they can get him on a cheap re-sign if he's still doing reasonable but not quite his top form anymore.

    All of these comments that state JT is a plus for this team are missing the real reasons why he is detrimental to the team. Yes, he is a nice guy, even a great guy and I don't know how good a captain he is, so I will give him that. The problem with JT is he coughs up the puck ... A LOT!
    I lost count of how many times he screwed up a pass in our defensive end and it cost us a goal or had someone breaking and he flubbed the pass. Yes, everyone blows a pass every now and then but watch his play and you will see a pattern. The winning goal to seal round one for us last year was nice, but he also cost us goals in that game.
    If we could trade him ... our cap problems would be gone and we could keep all of the rest of the core and perhaps upgrade our goal as well. With him ... we probably lose Nylander, our goal tending remains suspect and we don't improve the team enough to have any real chance at the cup.

It'd be better if it had been front heavy so he'd only be roughly a 8 or 9 million dollar cap hit on the back end of the contract which is where we're at now . Giving the extra couple million so sign one more guy and still have a million dollars as an emergency fund for negotiating contract extensions that numbers are the key issue on ( Nylander ) . If the Leafs had that extra million to offer he'd be way easier to negotiate with .

      And Draisitl, and dozens of other players who are simply better than him. Take him off that PP where he can get lost in the weeds letting Marner and Nylander do all the puck work and he's a 60 point player.

    I love JT, he's been stoic the whole time in Toronto. But I truly believe if Matthews is resigning, then Matthews should have the C, it's time to put that weight and responsibility on Matthews and leave it to him to step it up, or not.

    "Tavares's contract is only two more years!"
    Who else is up during that time? How much does the cap go up? Who else is due for a raise? Should a 2C get double digits?
    All questions OP dodged answering yet defended hard. Yikes.

    Leaf fans should be making their Captain mayor of Toronto. He helped them win the Lightning Cup!

    I’m sorry, but Matthews NEVER gets blamed for anything. It’s the truth, it’s always Marners fault.

    There’s so much skill on the leafs that they don’t have any room for grit which is essential during the playoffs, that’s why they do so well during the regular season and so bad during the post season

    People always seem to forget that the only reason his AAV is that high is the fact he was a belle of the ball free agent. Is his production value of his contract indicative of his performance compared to other players? No, but it never was supposed to be. You want this high skilled player who can go anywhere to be a franchise center for your playoff ready team? Gotta throw big money at him, and this is a direct consequence of that. Which happens to so many other teams, but is only focused on JT because he's a Leaf and the value is higher that most others but that will change. Especially in the coming years.
