@@LuisRivera-rl9gl It's a picardy third. Simplest explanation is instead of resolving to a minor chord like is in the key signature, it's a major chord instead, but the same root note.

The beat, cadence, and arrangement of this hits a chord in me that I didn't know I needed until I heard it. I love the almost jazz-like opening with the guitar, slowly easing in the acordian and bells. Though I'd be remise if I didn't mention that flute at the end, I can't NOT smile when I hear that part.

I've been singing along for a while now, and yet... at 2:45 I hear this part in the harmony, and I just can't make out what pitch it's at.
I'm not even remotely versed in music besides "i love this song" but it's almost to me like the guys swapped who went high/low on that last note to what they would normally sing for their pitches(?), so the higher voiced guys went low and deeper voices went high? if that makes sense, im not kidding on knowing zilch about music rip
Its a Picardy third. Normally the chord is a D minor but they sing a D major, just one note is different. Its a beautiful touch

The misinterpretation of this song by some commenters is a real shame.
It is *not* supposed to be happy. Listen to the lyrics, it's right there. It's about a crew psyching themselves up to go on a mission of which they are rightly terrified. It's about how people in that kind of situation lie to themselves and make a show of bravado in front of others in an attempt to be braver themselves. It's not about how the whalers will make lots of money and get lots of women. It's about how there's every chance they won't, because they'll be dead. And how they know that, but kid themselves anyway, because they need the work, and if they faced reality they'd jump ship. And it's a brilliant representation of that thought process and how it contrasts with the truth.
Having good associations with it is one thing; I do myself. But it does this wonderful, clever, evocative song a real disservice to act like the mood of it is in any way positive.

@@Slothmania Ha! A good answer as any. I'd aspire to first mate but have not even the time or training for a 50 ton license. The good thing is you don't have to have a license to sail for pleasure. My uncle has his 50 ton. I have one friend with a 3rd mate unlimited and another with her 100 ton. I should find out if she still holds that. She's now in charge of the volunteer program for the Missouri, much more than 100 ton! But with 16" guns, whose going to argue?
