Wow that looks very nice... I had second thoughts about lava rocks but watching your video I was wrong. I'm starting a project in my back lawn with lava rocks. Thanks for uploading.
This looks nice ..but unfortunately using plastic..instead of landscape cloth does not allow the earth critters to breathe and you kill your foil..also plastic does not allow drainage..commercial landscape cloth will breathe and keep your soil healthy.. some people use layers of cardboard under rock..which you can get free..the worms love it..
Yeah, they're likely being overloaded on some nutrients & lacking in others. What you've recreated here is a desert, not a garden. The rock is also likely baking them half to death whereas leaves & dirt keep their roots cool. (Circling them with rocks also tends to do more damage than good.) Try a perennial food forest based on what grows well locally. It'll cost more initially but save a lot more down the road with cheap & easy food. Google permaculture & find some sites in your area to give you some great ideas.
All the lava rock looks good… The depth sounds like a good idea but the plastic sadly is not the way to go ....doesn’t allow water to get through to the earth
Where is the best place to purchase these lavs rocks for the lowest price? I did a small portion on my front yard with the free lava rocks that my neighbor gave me but need a little bit more.
Hello, I have some red lava rock that I would like to use to convert a small portion of my yard into a parking pad for a camper van. Do you know of any reason why I should not drive/park on red lava rock or do you think this would work? TIA
Nancy Glowacki ....:???? I did park my truck on the lava rocks sometimes. Sometimes the small rocks would go into the tire groves.: also if you don’t put like a heavy plastic under the rocks the earth will start to swallow them
Jared Verrett got them for free.. I did a gig on Craigslist and it was removing these to put bark... it was a big house he said I could have them.... I had to clean them like the used to clean gold... but it was worth it
Jared Verrett I would recommend finding a cheap source of plastic.. do not use the mesh they sell at Home Depot.. you'll have to do the work over again... if possible use a thick tarp

In Mexico this kind of rock it's known as " Tezontle" ...also used on highway sides!
Do you know you can use that lava rock in a propane gas fire pit
No idea ..

Thank you very much for the reply!
How much did you pay for the lava rocks total
Jared Verrett got them for free.. I did a gig on Craigslist and it was removing these to put bark... it was a big house he said I could have them.... I had to clean them like the used to clean gold... but it was worth it
Gero Merca I did a small area before. Now I want to do my whole yard in polised black stones

And you have never had a problem of water pooling because of the plastic?
