Some of these comments are making me wish I never reacted to New Jeans
I spent 40 mins praising the girls and the talents, the melodies as catchy and fresh and the dances as interesting. I like them a lot and made that clear.
I had an issue with cookie and not because I am generally against young idols or suggestive lyrics as I explained.
I didnt say people are wrong for seeing it differentiy so i would appreciate that same respect.
SO NO I am not homophobic closed-minded, jumped to conclusions, rude, hypocritical. I will not be fake so people like it better. I never laid insult at the girls, I simply reviewed the elements I was presented with
I explained in detail that the visuals, members expressions, some suggestive dance moves and definitely lyrics - both those in English and those translated in English make me uncomfortable. It's possible there is a double entendre in the meaning but any analysis should still accept the element of romance/sexual invitation and innuendo. They centred the lyrics on a boy. If its just about their music being a cookie the subject would never be identified. Also the cookie is referred to as being owned by them, e.g my making it clear its an exchange involving two people. Its something the girl can give not something owned by the group as a whole.
The chorus uses 3 well known double entredes side by side, hungry, thirsty, dessert together the message is clear.
The innuendos throughout the song are very clear.
The lyrics are composed in English by western writers so English was original. If the Korean translations were cuter that's fine, I only respond to what I saw and heard.
I'm bored of going through my interpretations because of defensive fans. Critique doesn't negate any value in them. It's how we should approach art!
If you want to share your different interpretations of the elements let's go for it. If you wish to abuse and insult me your message with be deleted and you will be removed from the channel.

People blindly defending the song is the problem. i feel like if people wanted to actually support the group they'd actually consider and take note of the criticisms and controversy around the lyrics and the CEO. Whether or not fans want to claim it was intentional or not, the company should've known better. Even Koreans found issues within the lyrics so you're definitely valid. Anyways I loved the reaction, I had the same exact reaction to cookie so I was laughing seeing someone else go through it as well.

tbh, i liked cookie's instrumental, vocals, and dance... its really the lyrics that really threw me off. I mean, they could've connected a cookie to other aspect/s, such as a heart. Like, a cookie is sweet and soft but fragile, they could connect it to a girl's personality like that. That even though their heart's like a cookie, it shouldn't be broken. HYBE! Funnily enough I think the youngest (who was born in 2008 😭) looks like one of the oldest. She’s the one you pointed out that looks like she’s been in the game for long (I believe she sings first in cookie). Hanni looks very young to me. But they all look super young and under 18.
Koreans have said that the Korean lyrics to Cookie are very innocent but there’s no denying that the translation is creepy af. You could blame it on poor translation but even the lines originally written in English are highly suggestive.
The most disgusting thing about Cookie to me is that Danielle (the one you think is the youngest) and Hanni are both Australian and speak English. They’re probably aware of the suggestive nature of the lyrics and I hope they don’t feel too uncomfortable performing the song.
I agree that hybe is making them very similar. I still can’t tell the difference between Hyein and Haerin and it doesn’t help that their names are very similar.

as metaphorical cookie is representing on a song, the girls did actually explained what they interpreted from the lyrics and said that cookie was meant to convey that they made something sweet like a cookie to their fans, it could be that this meant that it's their music. think of it like if our mind was a blank canvas and we were just to put meaning to things in our minds, if one wasn't malicious enough or green minded in their heads, they wouldn't think cookie was literally meant other things but just about someone making a cookie. it's all about one's perception and interpretation that makes cookie naughty. yes they are young and having mature audience with dirty perception is none of their problem, it's almost equivalent to saying that it is okay for men to tell girls what to wear.

@@bilbo7115 I'm not one to argue on the internet so I'll just say this.
Firstly, people who see these words as sexualised are the western community, aka Americans. The 2 people who wrote the songs are not Americans. One is even a Korean woman, the other is Swedish. While I agree that in English translation, the song is weird, that was not the songwriters' intention (as seen in Hybe's statements). They didn't need to release a statement, but they did, because they most likely had honest intentions.
There's a thin line between caring about the idols and just spreading hate. I haven't said you're spreading hate. I'm just saying, you can communicate how you feel without feeling the need to be vulgar. If you're so convinced that the song is sexual, then don't listen to the song. But talking bad about people you don't even know personally, you can't read people's minds. And yes the company is made up of people.

@@satyratosin Many swedish ppl can speak English rly well. And just cuz one songwriter is a korean woman doesn't mean you can assume she's free from blame. Many kpop songwriters do have some understanding of English. To the public the song is obviously sexual so it's hard to understand that a company as big as hybe didn't have at least 1 person who caught onto the sexual lyrics. It's bcuz they care about their reputation that they released a statement it wasn't a random altruistic act.
Its bcuz of justifications like "there are bigger problems than this" and "just don't listen to the song" that results in more minors being sexualised in that industry. Do u think this type of thought process is helping them? So called fans are just giving the okay sign to HYBE that this is okay just cuz they don't want newjeans to get hurt when it's precisely this negligence that has hurt newjeans' reputation and other groups as well.
The facts are that by using English lyrics HYBE is trying to target western audiences so why can't western audiences criticise the inappropriate English translations of a song they put out? All media that Is put out into the public domain can be criticised. Even if there was honestly no English speaker who wrote the English translation and therefore couldn't see the sexual meanings how is the company not at fault for that too? At the very least this release showed their negligence.

they did release a video before cookie was released, they said that idea behind the song is that it is a fan song, and the ingredients were the previous song attention, hype boy and hurt and when they put them together in an mini album you would get addicted to they songs and would ruin any other songs for you, it was meant to be symbolized in the video by the cookie that they made (as in the songs) at the start rolling out of frame then at the end rolling back in as the CD of the mini album. That is how they explained it, i do see how it hard not to see the undertones, i do think the song is a little inappropriate for a younger person to be singing. Note i’m am a 16 year old gay male so i don’t think i see this the same way as an adult would, i’m probably more ok with it as i’m not as mature or i don’t fully understand the consequences.

Even if the song was about that (which I highly doubt. A song about fans when they just debuted and don't really have any long term fans? Weird) there was clearly hidden undertones there. This actually makes me even more uncomfortable BECAUSE I'm a teenager. The idea of me being made to sing a song like this makes my skin crawl. Plus, the person who arranged that song for them had already been accused of being a very creepy person (I don't want to word it as anything else, because this is just alleged).
The idea of a 14yr old debuting is already quite strange. To be honest, I hate that teenagers that young are able to debut. I think idols minimum age to debut should be 17 or 18. There were also a bunch of middle aged men that attended their fan sign. In Korea(or actually most Asian countries), generally, sexual meanings aren't really talked about. There's few teens in Korea that actually understand hidden meanings like that. The girls themself could have no idea what they're singing about, and just blindly follow the plans for their debut.
All this with the debut, to a member of the group being made to wear a shirt that has the word "Pimp". It sucks because the girls are so talented, but I'll be honest, HYBE and girl groups aren't meant to be.
Sorry if this is a lot to read, most people probably stopped reading somewhere in the middle, cause I got off topic a lot. I really just want to say, this is NOT a cute baking for fans song. I think there are two competing arguments between people who only speak Korean and people who can only speak English. I think you have to be able to speak both to make a judgment. From the comments, I can believe that the Korean lyrics sound innocent, however, like many Korean groups today the goal is to make it internationally so they certainly have English-speaking producers and lyricists. Hybe is a well-funded organization given that there are billionaires owning it. All of the members speak English so I'm pretty sure the goal is to attract an English-speaking audience. It's not just the term 'cookie' meaning something different in English the other parts of the lyrics are problematic too, if they are describing a CD or their music why would they have to say "made it just for you", "But it's not free", "softer than a brownie" ect. I think they made it innocent for the Korean audience but also sexualized the lyrics to attract an international audience or create controversy.

"Goob-da" or "goob-gi" is a word that means a type of cooking method.
The word "Goobgi" can be translated in various ways, including baking, roasting, grilling, burning, and so on.
In Korea, we used to use the word "baking cookies and CDs."
But we rarely use CDs these days.
So there might be people who don't know the word "Baking CD" or "Burning CD."
Maybe little kids don't know. Like young people don't know floppy disks.
"Goobgi" and "Cookie" have similar pronunciations.
CD Goobgi=Burning CD, Cookies Goobgi=Baking Cookies
This kind of pun is what Koreans like.
This is a funny pun, but sadly, it is a pity that only Koreans can understand it.
I am Korean and I recently found out that cookies have sexual meaning. It was shocking.
In general, cookies are just cookies in Korea. It doesn't mean anything else.
Cookie is a word that Koreans like because it has a very cute sound and meaning.
I think it has cute sounds like words like cookies, cutie, kitty, sweetie, and puppy.
I think there are a lot of people who named their pets Cookie in Korea.
    I like BTS, too.
We call Jungkook "Kookie". Because Jungkook is our cute youngest.
The funny thing is that Jungkook's signature animal emoji is a rabbit.
Do you know the sexual meaning of rabbits in Korea?
When you find out, you'll laugh inside every time someone calls a man a rabbit.
Just as Koreans didn't know that cookies had sexual meaning, people in other countries don't know the sexual meaning of rabbits.
Don't forget we have a different culture.
If Cookie's lyrics are a problem, BTS's lyrics are also a problem.
The lyrics of the song they sang at the beginning of their debut also include many double meanings and sexual meanings.
But they didn't have a problem. Right?
The double meaning can be in any word, so every singer's song can have a problem.
Is the lyrics a problem? or is our dirty mind a problem?
It may be hard to accept in other countries, but at least in Korea, Cookie's lyrics have a cute meaning.
In this song, cookie means CD. The rolling CD is so cute!
The meaning of the lyrics is.
"If you try the cookies that I made, you won't think of any other food."
    To interpret it,
"If you listen to our songs, you don't want to listen to other songs."
I hope the girls who just debuted don't get hurt.
I used a translator because I am not good at English. Please understand even if my comment is awkward.

They could have done a set where the girls are in a kitchen baking a cookie showing us the process ( like making a song ) and giving it to there crush or someone else as a confession idk ( aka fans ). It would make sense since their mvs so far give teen girls having fun vibes why not do it with this mv.The lyrics would have to be altered here and there. Cookie is about burning CDs. Baking Cookies is supposed to be “burning CDs” because that’s what it means in Korean, like they use it that way. The whole thing is about how they’re making something amazing for fans and non fans and it will get them addicted. Most other language translations do not have any suggestive lyrics, it’s really only the English one. The translator either did that on purpose to make it sexual or it was done on purpose by the company in a bad attempt to bring attention to them. Yes, the English lyrics could’ve been written a lot better but I think it’s important to consider that the entirety of Korea thought the song was cute and innocent and in no way sexually suggestive. It was a bad mistake on their part but literally no other people are complaining about this because it’s not what it’s meant to be lol. I feel like there would be no way they would push cookie so much in your face in that way especially because they’re young, even older groups sing about it in a much more tame way. Plus, cookie being slang for 🐱 is only an American thing. Yes it was wrong, but we can’t be unfair and shit on everything and give hate to the girls with lots of people are doing (not this video tho).

Even for men, a guy puts his arm on another guy's shoulder in a type of bond. Bake in Korean is 'ppang gubgi'. Burning CD in Korean is 'gubgi CD'. Both use similar sound of 'cookie'. Cookie in asian culture simply means baked dough. It is no fault of Koreans that it carries sexual undertone in the western culture.
Just like Korean 'nae-ga' means I. It is no fault of Koreans that it sounds like the 'N' word used in the western culture as slur against black people.

I don’t know why people have problem with the lyrics of cookie. I mean it’s art! The interpretation depends on you, the audience. If you interpreted it as a sexual thing, then you got dirty mind. YOU GOT DIRTY MIND! And that’s YOUR problem. I don’t sexualize the girls. I’m just being objective. I Don’t even try to sexualize the lyrics. What’s wrong with people’s mind nowadays? Everything gotta be sexual???

And the fact that the members themselves explained the meaning of the song, and people chose to think that it was a sexualized song.

Love the girls and their music. I agree that cookie is sexual. It's not appropriate for their age.

I love cookie. I could listen to it as long as I don't see New Jeans because then it's relating to them and it's not okay at all. I hate the song for that reason which is why I don't watch the MV. If red velvet got the song, it's fine, it's whatever but New Jeans? Even right at debut. It makes Hybe look bad and a bad start for New Jeans though they are very striking and talented.

"Intense gaze"? Okay, so maybe i'm blind, but I only see a 18 y/o and a 16 y/o friends chatting and holding hands... I'm sure you didn't mean it in a bad way, its just...weird. And if you so aware of their ages, and pissed about Cookie (you have every right to), then you shouldnt say stuff like this either. I hope nobody would take this as an offense, I just wanted to share my thoughts.
