- On this episode: SummerSlam 1999 guaranteed "An Out of Body Experience" and that's what it delivered. The ppv also introduced the WWE Universe to the returning Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Ventura would officiate the triple threat main event of Mankind vs. Stone Cold vs. Triple H. Bruce and Conrad discuss why the company chose to bring back Ventura, and the creative decisions surrounding the historic PPV.

Those complaining about Austin not putting over the son in law...listen to the non-reaction of the crowd when Hhh won the title the next night from Foley. Hhh wasnt ready. Austin was right. Not until Foley made Triple H in their 2000 feud was he ready for main event status. Hhh owes his career to Mick Foley.
Definitely, that Royal Rumble 2000 streetfight was hunter's best match.
@pandamash1
Shamsi YES!!! That’s the match that made me respect him as a wrestler I liked his character great heel but foley put him over so well !!
You can tell he wasnt ready when they decided they needed triple h to be the leader of dx again. Let's try what worked before.
"That doesn't work for me, brother." - Steve Austin
Mankind was inserted into the match because Austin injured his shin during the off-air brawl on Raw (7/26/99) and they needed someone to help carry the work load. It had nothing to do with not wanting to drop the title to Triple H.
As a result of the injury, Austin missed all his house show dates until late October, was made the enforcer at the Unforgiven 6-pack challenge instead of competing, and was barley active on TV until his match with Triple H at No Mercy…where he put Triple H over in a WWF title match.
I don't care how many stuners Kevin Owens does there will never be another Stone Cold Steve Austin. And that's the bottom line ....
Kevin who?
His stunners shit as well 😂😂
I dont care how many Stunners KO does, he doesn't beat his wife like Steve Austin does lol... And that's the bottom line, cuz Stone Cold's a piece of shit.
Jorge W. Kush
You should give Austin the "STUNNER"!
@@JorgeWKush you’re an idiot
Even now you can tell wrestling is always in Austin's heart. Yeah hes doing his own thing, but whenever hes back for the night. He makes the most of it and always gives the crowd what they want.
The greatest to ever do it. Long live the Texas Rattlesnake.
Despite what b.s. Austin did in his past (which some youtubers made comments about) he's still the best to ever do it. There's only a hand full of HUGE pops that's happened in WWF/WWE, and I mean those REALLY REALLY REALLY HUGE POPS, deafening pops, pops that people heard in neighboring towns.....Austins owns 75% of those. And THATS the bottom line, cause every WWE fan, "THE WWE UNIVERSE LOL" said so!
Didn’t see any of these but I love to listen to Bruce. I hope he lives a long time, unlike so many of our friends and family. Dabs help.
While Rock's promo def didn't help Billy, Rock wasnt the reason Billy's singles push didn't work...it was because to be a top guy, you have to be able to connect with the audience alone, and Billy didn't. He was a good worker, had a great look, but he wasn't great on the mic. He's tremendous as playing off other people, which is a key reason why he has been so good in so many tag teams(including now with the acclaimed)
Also Jarrett wasn't and never was on Austin's level...he just wasn't, and history has shown a program with Austin was very unlikely to change that. Jarret was a solid upper mid card performer but just never had enough to be a top guy at a world class promotion(TNA was far behind WWE and when he was on top in WCW, the company was in it's death throws.
Conrad and Bruce, you guys are top notch! I love this show. Keep up the great work and just know you both have a life time fan. God bless S.T.W. and God bless America!
Ah another Friday of STW to waste My productive work day. Good show!
@Virtual Pro Wrestling Matches At least he doesn't blow construction workers for $1 a pop like you do.
where you work, jabroni?
@fat dork I see, you're unemployed.
@Virtual Pro Wrestling Matches funny... real funny. Don't quit yo day job, jabroni.
@Flatulence Pile ANOTHER fake account?? It wasn't enough that you would like your own comments from multiple accounts, now you're COMMENTING TO YOURSELF.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmao, Mike Lookinland is the actor who played Bobby Brady on the Brady Bunch. How high was Bruce for this one?
Mike Nice...LMFAO....Dude, I was gonna comment the same thing, but I wanted to see if anyone else knew!? Lol
Bruce gave Vince Russo a slight British accent when he was explaining Vince Russo's Logic for the Tori Ivory match... Very funny
Quick start to the show begins at 00:37.
JR Blanton it took me longer to find the comment
I love and still love Crash Holly. Great Character... deeply missed
I mean betweem Hulk and HBK’s political schemes while on top,I think Austin deserved the right to not wanna work with ppl and he actually had VALID reasons. Lets be honest,Billy Gunn was ALWAYS a better tag wrestler than singles and Road Dogg was the one who had more of the charisma out of the two. Jeff Jarrett also was no where near Austin’s level that beating him would have made a difference. Austin didnt pull a Hogan and say guys were too small to lose to or Shawn faking injuries and vacating belts,he gave reasons rooted in wrestling psychology. Neither of those guys would benefit from a program with him,its actually kind of insulting to a guy who saved the company from bankruptcy and probably the most over superstar ever. Austin also refused a match with Marc Mero AFTER being power bombed by his wife. Again...by wrestling logic,if Sable power bombed Mero, why would it take Austin longer than 20 secs to squash him and if so,whats that say about Austin.
The difference between Austin and Hogan/HbK was that Austin knew what was best for business. Hogan and Shawn were always more interested in what was best for them. I think it helped Hogan for awhile to be selfish and he definitely took the WWF to new heights. His wcw days are another story...meanwhile Shawn's run as champ failed to bring in new viewers, Austin started a revolution. Long live the Texas Rattlesnake!
The rock put the most people over in wwe when he was on top but the rock knew he was so much more over than opponents that he could loose to them without out them being a threat he put over hhh Kurt Chris Jericho and Brock Lesnar and allowed hogan to have the ring after his match.
Coachg ... dosent matter who beat who and when.... ITS A SCRIPTED SPORT....
funny how ppl believe AUSTIN really was a bad ass.....
And HHH had no in ring skill...
Keith Crockett scripted sport is correct but Austin was the most over guy EVER and Triple H was not at the time. I still think he coulda lost the title in a smaz finish and not lose clean.
@@keithcrockett5675 you’re an idiot
Shout out to mideon and viscera ... unsung heroes of pre attitude and attitude Era. You got to have your foot soldiers... add Crash Holly to that list. He just ended up being a a standout footsoldier. Darn I miss those times

This is what kicks off my weekend. Happy Friday!
Not sure where that came from about Shamrock suing the company there's nothing going on although he's going to be reappearing on Impact Wrestling in September. Still hope for a standalone episode on him
Shamrock was awesome and could've been a champion. Definitely more credible than a guy like Triple H!
I can't believe Bruce can't tell the difference between crash Holly and Bobby Brady
It’s pretty well known that Hulk ratted on Ventura about the formation of a wrestlers union. That’s why he still hates Hogan. It came out during deposition during Ventura’s court case over royalties. Of course, Hogan is on WWEs current payroll and Ventura isn’t so that little detail is conveniently left out by these 2.
Watch the RF video clip of Ventura talking about Hogan stooging him off to Vince for trying to form a union.
Hogan also made comments to Howard Stern about Jesse smoking pot and cheating on his wife which Jesse didn't care for.
Mike lookinland is the actor who played Bobby Brady
Steve Austin's popularity helped hide the fact that 1999 was a lackluster year in wrestling. That is the only reason why they ultimately won the Monday NIhgt Wars. On the other channel, we had just come off the final Road Wild 99 ppv. Ironically, it was the last Pay per view that Eric Bishoff ran. This week on 83 weeks, Conrad and Eric broke down that PPV. This ppv was in the top 10 of my all time Summerslam. Bruce didn't like the WWF Women's Championship between Ivory and Tori. I thought it was great. My thing was that Ivory and Tori were in the wrong era of women's wrestling. This era of women's wrestling was Ga Ga go go bullshit and women look liked Debra McMicheal. I think Steve really didnt want to job to Triple H. He knew his value in the Monday Night War. I think that is why the WWF Championship took forever to be made. I think Chyna was an option but Steve didnt want to job to her. It was really weird that Mankind won the WWF Championship only to lose it to Triple H 20 hours later.
Joseph Boza 1999 was a let down. Mid 97 and 98 propelled the company. Russo’s ideas got stale. The McMahon drama was boring. Royal Rumble, Mania, Summer Slam, And Survivor Series were all weak.
i always said 99 was a bad year for WWF
I'd take 99 over anything they've done in the last 17 years.
Little known fact. Greenwich is known for its overpriced knuckle sandwiches.
2 things bout this show.
1. Short matches was an attitude era staple that old school fans hated but was standard SOP in wwf back then.
2. Watching live Test/Shane stole the show. Listen to the pop when Shane does his 1st elbow. Plus they underplay here that this leads to the McMahon-Helmsley era 😑
Happy Friday dudes
Speaking on Austin and HHH, I always found it weird that they never spoke much on the 3 stages of hell match after HHH won. The next night on Raw, JR briefly mentioned that HHH came out the victor, but there was no recap, and the match was never really mentioned again. Everytime I hear a story about Austin not wanting to drop the belt to HHH, I remember that and it makes sense now
After 1998, Austin never had a pinfall victory over the son in law.
Antonio Jones no recap because Austin vs rock feud was gonna begin and why acknowledge Austin losing leading to wards his title match with rock ?
Why have Austin lose the match? Made no sense
@@rackballjones6585 To help explain why he sold out to McMahon. Of course, WWF Creative didn't touch on it.
Also Austin put Triple H over at the 1999 No Mercy PPV.
1:00:33 -Mike Lookinland > Bobby on the original Brady Bunch
Glad someone else got that, even if both people on the podcast didn't understand where they got it!
I wish it was on super Astros...hahaha😂😂😂😂🤣 This is a good show so far. Love you guys
I remember how big of a deal it was for Governor Jesse Ventura to get back in the ring. Just imagine if President Trump was to be a special guest referee in a WWE match today. Huge, huge ratings.
Might go the opposite way too could kill the ratings even more..
OGPetway - no, it wouldn’t. Trump is the most talked about individual on the planet. All the Trump supporters would tune-in to watch Trump. Get a clue.
OGPetway Go away. Trump could belch and garner more ratings than Kingston or Rollins.
Dr. Mantis Toboggan, M.D. Exactly. OGPetway wears a “The Man” t shirt.
It would be illegal for Trump to be paid to appear on RAW. A president cant profit off being president while in office. Of course Trump has already broken that law (a textbook impeachable offence btw) seeing as hes selling merch (15 bucks for one Trump drinking straw) and he hasn't cut his financial ties to certain Trump businesses. So I suppose breaking that law would just be another Monday for him.

Mike Lookingland was the actor that played Bobby Brady on The Brady Bunch. Not Crash Holly, lol.

They don't want to have Wrestlemania in Minnesota. They could still get a blizzard in April.
Jessie said WWE treating his election with respect was why he decided to do their show. He felt WCW made a Joke about it
As a diehard Steve Austin fan then and now, I do feel like he should’ve put over HHH 1v1. Yes Triple H hadn’t won championship gold at that level but this is how you make heels. This is how he could’ve elevated HHH at that time. If not at summer slam then at no mercy 99. Yes I know the rock interfered and triple H won at no mercy, but I’m talking about a clean win. Austin was going to be taking time off anyway might as well made a monster heel in the process.
Why should the golden goose Stone Cold Steve Austin lose clean to a heel? Thats not how wrestling works at the top. Heels cheat, thats why we boo.
Mankind was inserted into the match because Austin was injured when Raw went off the air on 7/26/99. He missed all his house show dates until October and was barley active on TV from August to October.
Remember him being placed into the ‘enforcer’ role at Unforgiven instead of competing in the 6 pack challenge? That’s why.
Foley took the title at Summerslam
because they didn’t Ventura raising the hand of a bad guy on the front page of the papers.
44:30 Snoopy the Dog likes to puff, puff, pass.
It's been an internet rumour for years that Austin was upset with how much Triple H was laying in those chair shots...I think Austin would get his receipt in later matches but the ending of this match always stood out to me as particularly brutal. I think it was a way to get Austin off TV for a bit due to his neck. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I always looked at that as Triple H taking advantage of a situation. That, or it was great storytelling because those chairshots looked real to me as a kid. Still do.
Mike Lookingland??
That raw when they were flip flopping the #1 contender spot around is one of the worst raw's of all time.I do agree with bruce tho this summer slam is just ok but im calling bullshit on the Austin thing I still think he didn't want to drop the title to h.Bruce himself has said a couple times he himself other agents ,writers&wrestlers thought he wasn't ready. I fell like throwing it on foley for a night was them meeting in the middle.
DK Barbados Austin shouldn’t have lost to Triple H at this point. His build up as top heel was weak. Truth be told, 1999 HHH wasn’t that over. By the end of the year and by early 2000, whole different story.
Travis McDonald You're right. Getting with Stephanie at the end of 1999 was his ticket to stay at the top and he knew it (that whole angle with HHH, Stephanie and Test was HHH's idea). Power play by HHH. Look where it got him. I say if not for that angle with Stephanie saving HHH from flopping, a guy like Kurt Angle would have surpassed him. Look at the rise of Kurt Angle during that time. He did it with his talent alone and ability to entertain. 2000 Kurt Angle arguably the greatest rookie year of all time. Definitely a top 3
Travis mcdonald i agree..i was saying bruce is bullshitting saying it was the plan for h to win it the next night.
R.C. Jonas your right as well I believe. H figured out A life hack lol
Austin made the right call. Trips was not ready to be a champion. Just going by the lack of crowd reaction the next night when he beat Foley. Nobody cared. It wasnt until 2000 that Trips stepped his "game" up and truly earned that spot. Being with Stephanie also helped I'm sure!
every match does not need a storyline. sometimes a top guy should have a random match with someone like a billy gunn. if austin beats him clean in a competitive match on RAW it still gets billy over. thats why nitro in 1996-1997 was sometimes better then RAW because there would be random matchups and competitive wrestling matches. not every match needs run ins, dqs, promos, storylines etc.

One of the best sellers of the 90s. Maybe in history I'm just not that old to know haha

Oh shit Bruce is gonna go to war with JR
Wasnt Jessy's dig on made for TV movies more directed at his shitty one that year, and not Hogan.
wait a sec. kidnapping the dog is bad now bruce? really? Really? as apposed to cooking and eating pepper? haha love you man! we know you're not a fan of pepper because...? "the little f**ker bit!" :)
39:25 Yeah, Hulk Hogan would be willing to "forgive" Jesse all right... and then he'd turn right around and continue talking trash about Jesse behind his back, just like he does with everyone.
Dizzy the funny thing is Hogan has nothing to forgive, it's the other way around. Ventura has hated Hogan ever since the 80s when he tried to unionize the wrestlers and Hogan stooged on him to Vince.
In addition to that, I think Jesse in general despises Hogan for being such a notorious backstabber.
Taylor George Anderson John Martinez Sarah
Bruce's Cornette sounds nothing like Corny. Still entertaining tho.
Austin didn’t want to drop the belt to wrestlers who never held the title.
He lost the WWF title to Jericho :/
Rschr101 he didn’t want to
Why can’t we just admit that Austin didn’t want to job to Triple H? Bruce already admitted Austin was throwing his weight around with Jarrett and Billy Gunn.
He wasnt really throwing his weight around with Billy though. A pointless match wouldnt have helped either guy.
HHH was a heel, it's his job to get the face over in the long run. HHH got his licks in on Austin, left him laying bloody many times. Ultimately, Austin didn't have to put anyone over unless he wanted to. That's a once in a generation star you put over everyone.
Jarrett and Mr. Ass couldn't hold a candle to Austin. Jarrett could sell, I can't deny that, but he wasn't on Austin's level.
AMEN. I agree. I dont think injuries were the reason the main event took forever. I think Steve really didnt want to job to Triple H. I think he didnt want to job to nobody. He was stubborn. He admitted it years later after he was asked to job to Brock in the 02 King of the Ring Tournament. I think Chyna was put in the match as a challenger but Steve didnt want to fight a woman. Even though the woman the 9th wonder world of wonder Chyna. It didn't help that Vince Russo was on the writing staff. His writing is the drizzling shits.
Luvs2 Spooge Billy Gunn was never a top guy or even close. He had a great look. His work was good. He was just a more limber Lex Luger.
1999 was an odd year. WWF was at an all time high but Vince winning the rumble, Mania 15 being lackluster(minus Rock/Austin) along with KOTR, the higher power story(although we got the JR "awe son of a BITCH" line LOL), Austin getting ran over and Steph turning heel. Didn't pick up for me until the night HHH beat Big Show for the title into the 2000 rumble.
I agree, it was a very odd year especially coming off the monster yr of 98. I think the best match of the yr was at the rumble between Mankind and the Rock, but I am hard pressed to think of more high quality matches, Mania was average, this SummerSlam show was okay. But they would make up for it in 2000 witch was another monster year.
Super Vazquez 64 Agreed. Thankfully for WWF, WCW was a total dumpster fire. Hogan and Nash dug the grave, Russo helped dig it deeper. They missed a chance to gain serious ground.
@Virtual Pro Wrestling Matches what?
It was odd but it got insane ratings and money.
@Chris Terry Most definitely. That's why I give him the most annoying wrestling catch phrase of all time
How does Bruce lie so much on these podcasts?
Everyone knows Austin didn't wanna put HHH over that night. Saying it was meant for Mankind, yeh ok, that was great one day reign
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
His memory is foggy, but not going to say he’s lying. It was well documented at the time that Mankind was inserted into the match because Austin injured his shin during the off-air brawl on Raw (7/26/99) and they needed someone to help carry the work load. That had nothing to do with not wanting to drop the title to Triple H.
As a result of the injury, Austin missed all his house show dates until late October, was made the enforcer at the Unforgiven 6-pack challenge instead of competing, and was barley active on TV until his match with Triple H at No Mercy…where he put Triple H over in a WWF title match.
Putting the strap on Foley had more to do with not wanting Ventura pictured on the front page raising the hand of a bad guy than anything else.
Next time give us ss 2005
