I'm a freelance artist with a history in frameshop work and I have to admit, I was MORTIFIED at the thought of gluing my artwork to anything. In case any of you have the same fear, I suggest buying some double-sided artist tape. It's sturdy and reliable and most importantly... easily removable if something goes sideways. In either case, the outcome is clean and very modern! Thanks for the tips, Bob. :)
Thanks Bob for easy how to mount on canvas. I took one of your workshops at Cheap Joes-with my daughter, Jeni. We had a blast. I used your workbook to teach from this past week, and showed my students your "permission slip". I teach watercolor at the Roswell Visual Arts Center in Roswell, GA. I will always be a student as we never can learn enough about art, can we? Thanks for being a good role model for teaching. I am all about the fun, therapeutic process--and if it doesn't work out like I like, I make book markers.
I'm not an artist or a painter...at least not yet, just gathering whatever supplies needed for pours. But aren't you a sweetheart for sharing your expertise with us? I'm sure it took many tries to get it to what you're sharing with us, total strangers. 82 and counting.
I subs to your channel i am on here to learn how to paint. Someone recommend me this man's channel and i am watching it all day. He is amazing and glad i find his channel.
I've always been a DIY-er and I can see how framing and delivery can simply be a matter of personal choice and preferences. Here in China because I don't have a great command of the language - I end up doing almost everything DIY. High quality art supplies are cheap (which is awesome) and most shops and galleries expect the artist to deliver all of their work as Robert is doing here. Thanks for posting another excellent video !
Jeez Bob, here I am at the beginning of 2023, just catching up with you and your brilliant videos. This one is going to be so good for me - it's exactly the finish I prefer! Thank you for all your advice and demos, I'm retired now and so enjoying having time to throw paint around, it's great fun! Happy New Year to you and yours from Bonny Scotland :)
I just met your enthusiastic videos, we are in quarantine in Italy.... good torna presto see you...pity I chose watercolor just some months ago, but still interesting your acrylics!!!
Thank you for this video. I’m new to painting watercolor and a friend has encouraged me to enter one of my pieces in a contest. I have already ordered my cradled panel and I’m excited to try this framing method. All your videos are great!
Hi Bob, Just wanted to say, you look good, have you been doing the healthy thing? Last I checked your vides you appaired very tired. Was a bit concerned. All the best to you and Kate. Tim S
Thanks for showing this process and how you adhere the paper to the boards. But seems to me the boards, particularly the larger ones, can get pretty pricey too. Have you found that Cheap Joe's are the best pricing around? Do you also mount non-contemporary images the same way? I wish I could afford to do your workshops. Can you do a video some time on how you contact and present your art to galleries, what price points you give them and so on? Much appreciate all your videos and work. Also do you get a gallery to first approve an image before you mount the work, or do you mount everything regardless?
I've been getting up to speed on Gouache on paper. I'm about 50 in and they're starting to look like something. I was wondering how I could present them for my gallery and ship for on-line sales. I'm doing exactly this! It's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
Love this technique Bob... and your teaching are priceless, God bless you. One question. You show us how to glue the paper art to the gatorboard, but then how do you glue it to the wood panel? The same glue ? It's going to be on top like the same size? Or leaving 1/2 inch too?
Maybe put a few coats of Gamblain Cold Wax on the face.......I think seal the edges with Liquitex Satin Varnish. Worked for me:) Thanks so much for posting.
Great idea! I tried this...and have loved the results BUT last time I was low on gel and ended up with air bubbles in the middle and a lousy adhesion all around. Any ideas for remedy? I've reglued what I could reach but of course the big bubbles are in the middle. Love your videos. There's always something to learn.

Hi Bob. Thanks for this tip. I am trying to determine what to do to display some 11 x 15 #140 watercolor pieces in a gallery. They are not modern. Have you experienced any push back for this method? I also watched your piece using mat, backer and bags and wonder if I could adhere a hanger on bag for temporary use.
Hello! Can I use gel medium to glue Polyester canvas to masonite panels too?? I glued them first time and got so much bubbles on them, i think cause i didn't use a roller? The wrinkles came through a few weeks later and trying to figure this out :(
Love your tips and advice. I want to mount some paintings I've done on panels to a cradled birch panel - MDF to wood... What medium should I use to glue MDF to wood? Thanks so much :)
Question...how does it dry without air getting to it? I make a lot of cards out of paintings and scraps but drying them and flattening them seems to be a problem. If I press between plastic they don't dry but if I leave them unpressed they ripple.... Eeerrrrr. Do yours dry because the wood allows access to air? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Lara.
Thanks Bob. Have been watching you for a long time. When are you coming back to Texas? I have been trying to get in a workshop class but full!!! May I ask, I’m sure you e said a hundred times, what kind of paper do you use?
I'm curious about figuring the size of paper vs the size of the panel so that there's a consistent edge around the paper art. Also how in the world do you make sure the paper is square and even on the panel when gluing it down. I have a lot of Bob's videos and books and watch the blasts, but am a math dunce and have troubles getting my work glued down on the panel evenly and square.
It looks to me like he deckles (or cuts) the paper originally to 1/4" smaller all around than the wood panels he uses, but that depends on how much of a border you want. You might want less border on small works and larger borders on larger works. He generally paints on the same sizes for his smaller pieces, so he always knows what size the panels are and trims his paper accordingly. If you visit his website (robertburridge.com), you can pull up his pages of original small paintings to see what sizes he generally uses (like 6x9 or 10x10 etc). As for making sure the paper is even on the panel, he just eyeballs it. If you can get one corner looking good, generally speaking the others will be good too, assuming you cut your paper properly. If you lay the panel down on the paper first and draw around it, you just need to make sure you cut the paper smaller than your outline, depending on how large a border you want. You can also try putting the matte medium on 1/2 of the sheet only and working with only half the surface at a time; then when you are certain all is well, put the medium on the rest of the paper and panel with more confidence. Just a thought. He has a video on how he deckles his paper you might want to watch - ruclips.net/video/QaG6zUVpxJ8/видео.html. It's just a matter of measuring everything first carefully and making sure of your work before cutting. Click on the "Videos" tab at the top of this page and scroll through his videos to find all his videos.
Check the sizes available at Cheap Joes or Blick and then tear the paper slightly smaller in size ..about an inch both directions and that should work! For example if your panel is 12x12" a common size then rip your paper 11x11"
what type of paper does one use to paint on? is is just canvas that isn't on wood? or is it like some special type of paper? sorry for the amateur question.. i have only painted on canvas, and it is a pain on the butt (or wallet) trying to get them framed when I'm finished. this would be so much cheaper, i just don't know what type of paper to use. can you still use an easel when using paper? i gotta try this!

Will this technique work mounting on canvas? Thanks!
Hey bob, what kind of paper do you use to paint on. Thanks . Love your videos.
He uses Fabriano 300 lb. - not sure of brand, but it is 300 lb.
Fabriano Artistico 300#
Hey Sue - Sorry for the slow response! My favorite watercolor paper is Fabriano Artistico.
I use Fabriano Artistico and Cheap Joe's Kilimanjaro.

What kind of black paint on the edges? Do you varnish it as well?
What type of 300 lb paper do u use? E.g. Watercolor or mixed media... thanks
My question is you said you varnish the 300 lb watercolour paper? Are you using watercolour paints and if so what kind of varnish would you use?
I use Minwax Polycrylic Varnish - waterbased clean-up!
if your painting daily ,how do you store your wet canvas to work on a new canvas in a small space studio ?
What do your varnish the 300 lb paper with after you have painted it?
Hello!! I would like to ask something. Why to paint on prepared paper and glue it on the board while you can prepare a board and paint directly on it?
I think : You don’t want to waste board in case if painting unsuccessful… thats what I am assuming
didn't catch the name of the board that wasn't foam board at 2.02 could you let me know what it is please?
Gator Board :-)
Thanks Rebecca so much xx
