Good video. Just note that that little eyelet on the end of the rope is there so you can attach the loose end of the rope to the opposite side of the spool to ensure the entire loose end stays under the rest of the rope as it is spooling to guarantee it is trapped. It’s not there to hold under tension., it’s to ensure it has more than one wrap holding tension.
Thanks so much for the video and the exact explanation. I just received my package and installed on my outlander according to your explanations. Came out excellent.
I got a 2022 outlander xmr I spooled out mine just to try it brand new and mine was kinked and knotted af as well. I just bought a red 1/4 syn winch line thanks for the vid dude.
Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for your informative video!! Helped out alot, and the tip about the shrink wrap on the cable was a great idea!! And it worked out perfectly!! Thanks man!👍
@@MudPuppyOffroad I was just saying what you said, just in a different order. I get it man, I just bought a 21 Sportsman xp1k trail pkg and it has less stuff than last years model. no LEDS, stitched seat, 3rd brake light.
Very good. Got the winch. Doing the same thing. Trying to back out the Allen nut, that pins the cable. Crossing my fingers, trying to avoid the drill. We’ll see. thanks for the vid. My 2023 xt came exactly how you said. Used it twice nothe winch has a hard time rolling it up and free spooling. Had the thing for 3 months and have to replace the steel cable
Mud puppy do this ASAP dielectric grease the winch controller on the bars its not fully sealed. We went with bubba rope, we use our winches daily and was worth the cost. We are currently changing out to warn axion 2500s and 5000s
Was the stock cable routed from underneath?? The hawse is much to high mounted to have that angle on the rope. Surely that is gonna play a factor in rope longevity and total capacity. I was always told to make the rope completely flat and true though the fairlead.
lol, I like the way you said if you aren't doing it this way you are doing it wrong. I'm sure there are other good ways to do it. I'm trying to figure out how to attach a rope without the little cap screw because when I took my steel cable off the screw is too short to go through the hole in the synthetic. I also don't have a hole in the drum, I will eventually figure it out.
The winch will come in handy loading up the Quad in the back of my pickup until I decide on a dedicated trailer - other than that I'll have to find a big boulder to secure it to if I need to get myself or someone out of a jam - but I'm not intending on doing anything crazy because I don't particularly want a 700 pound machine squashing me like the Ginger Bread man 😆
just put a $500 deposit on a 520 foot shift EPS Rubicon 2022 in Camo - the reason I chose Camo is because I don't intend on waxing it - it's going to get real dirty and scratched up - so Camo makes sense to me - Honda's not taking any orders till mid January and I'll have to wait around March for it to arrive - I am going to install a WARN winch with Synthetic rope - I'm using my set up for prospecting here in NV
Thank you for this video. Just bought A BRAND NEW Reny XMR 1000 ($$$) and same fucking garbage steel cable all rusted, kinked and frayed up. Used it ONCE and couldnt even pull it out manually lollll
Steel ropes typically don't fail all the time like the synthetics do. An ATV winch doesn't have much pulling power so there's not much risk of an overload failure. Steel won't be trashed by minor abrasion.
@@MudPuppyOffroad everyone says much safer. I don't think that holds true when it comes to low power winches like ATV winches. The break strength of 1/4 steel winch line is 8000lbs on a 3000lb winch that's a lot of margin. The synthetic line will break after 12-24 months of moderate use. The steel likely never will. So if it's between one that will break and one that won't which is actually safer?
Will I have good news for you they still sell shity outdated steel winch line for people like you! And it's cheaper. It's very simple from an engineering perspective synthetic winch lines stores a small fraction of the energy that a steel winch line does which means if it does fail it just falls to the ground it doesn't send a clevis through someone's forehead but you do you the rest of us will enjoy the tangle free easy spooling synthetic
I definitely looks like that however that's not how winches work best. You're better off having some angle at the fairlead than having the rope spool off the top of the winch
Great video. I am going to change my winch rope this afternoon so this video was great as I was wondering how to start it on the drum. Thank you. You made it real easy for me.
And when you load the rest of it on, it must be loaded u see some tension. Don’t just hit IN on the remote. Winch urself to a tree that’s slightly uphill and pull yourself in. The winch line always need to be loaded under a load.
@@MudPuppyOffroad yeah not as much but def some tension. Even reeling yourself in on level ground. This way those loose under layers don’t get crushed when loaded
some winches have a set screw that is usually all messed up and I just drill them out. Some other winches use a cramp that jams into the spool you just have to pull the cable out past that and cut the crimp off
What length do you think you could get In there with 5/16? People have been saying they got 50 feet of 7/16 in and I’m going smaller so I’m going to try about 70-80 if possible
I have a 2021 Outlander 650 Max XT and bought 1/4” synthetic off Amazon. Perhaps I got a crappy brand, but there in so way in heck that 1/4” rope is fitting into the stock holes on the winch! I installed the heat shrink still a no go! I’ll have to drill mine out one size up maybe 5/16 or 3/8 drill bit? Anyone else have to do this?
Do you have to drill out hole for 3/8 to pass through the hole? I know you used 1/4" but does anyone know if badlands 3500 needs to be drilled out some?
No I do not drill the spool I generally just put some heat shrink around the rope to make it easier to push through or I take out a few threads of the rope too reduce the diameter for the last few inches you don't need much strength there at the end anyways
Why not just splice it on? Through the hole, into the hole next to it and back out, then back in itself. No knot and you can pull it all the way out till it stops every time no problem. You’re basically just spicing it to one side of the drum. Soon as you put 1 turn on it, it’s centered back on itself on the loop other side of the splice. Maybe I’m doing it wrong…
Splicing it would work great but significantly more effort. I've never had one pull out of the winch with this method and it's very quick to change out a tope on the trail
Maybe you could try this, but what I do is splice it on first. Then if it breaks, there’s always a couple feet left to which I think it’s still quicker to cut it at 3’ sticking out. Then shove the new spare line into the 3’ sticking out, about 18” from end. Then take that 18” and into new back and forth couple times then finish inside new. Still way easier than having to get your hands up in there every time. When it breaks again it’s easy to remove everything back to that original 3-4’ and do it again. I only ever splice it once on the drum. But I re splice new spares onto original every time. Like I said it’s quicker than getting your hands in there every time. Also means you can eventually splice on and start using 5/16 which I haven’t broken yet. If you use 42-45’ of 1/4”. Your 5/16 fill to the same will be about 36-38. And as long as you got 1-2 turns on 5/16. You won’t break it unless you try. 7700 vs 12300. You lose 6-8’ and it’s still connected to the drum… I now run 1/4 on front 5/16 on back. It’s the way. My .02
You wound the rope on the wrong way. Look at the fairlead, the slot is aligned vertically with the top of your spool. That tells you the rope should have gone over the spool not under. Otherwise good video.

High quality stuff like amsteel is very abrasion resistant. It's also much safer than steel and a lot nicer to your hands when you're dealing with it

Rope looks like it should come from the top to line-up with fairlead
I definitely looks like that however that's not how winches work best. You're better off having some angle at the fairlead than having the rope spool off the top of the winch
That rope will wear fast on that set up. Maybe the winch was backwards?
First thing I do with a new bike is oil the whole winch cable
The only thing i don't like about the rope is it takes away a lot of the torque unless you have enough line out to get to the drum.
Great video. I am going to change my winch rope this afternoon so this video was great as I was wondering how to start it on the drum. Thank you. You made it real easy for me.
Good idea. I can pull the old cable off my RMAX with my Big Red.
Just bought a 50ft line from harbor freight for $35 with hook and fairlead. Not too bad
Vid on , how to lock winch rope to shackle like yours please..
Great video. I just bought a 2022 Canam had the steel cable snap. It's garbage.
How wide is that fairlead, 6"? Also, do you worry about the sythetic rope rubbing up against the fairlead edge to wear it down over time?
124mm, synthetic will last longer on an aluminum fairlead than on a roller.
And when you load the rest of it on, it must be loaded u see some tension. Don’t just hit IN on the remote. Winch urself to a tree that’s slightly uphill and pull yourself in. The winch line always need to be loaded under a load.
Not nearly as much tension is required with synthetic but definitely doesn't hurt
@@MudPuppyOffroad yeah not as much but def some tension. Even reeling yourself in on level ground. This way those loose under layers don’t get crushed when loaded
Dude I said the same thing first time I pulled my cable out. What the heck is up with steel cable on the top of the line 4 wheeler.
At what point should you stop letting line out to pull someone out?
How much should you leave on the spool to avoid it coming off the winch?
If you tie it like this you can pretty much let it all out by the time you build tension you should have a couple wraps on there anyways
Great video. Thanks homie
My brand new 2024 i used the winch like 5 times and its almost tore in half and cuts me all the time

Where did you get your low friction rings???? Everywhere I look they are way too big or they are the correct size & stupid expensive

So how do you get the cable out of the 2 holes...is there a set screw as I do not see one
some winches have a set screw that is usually all messed up and I just drill them out. Some other winches use a cramp that jams into the spool you just have to pull the cable out past that and cut the crimp off
@@MudPuppyOffroad awesome found the set screw..thx!

Yes. People usually recommend going with a bigger diameter. I live in Florida though I'm not a plow expert

Depends on the winch. On an OEM can am winch you can't put over 50" of 3/16. I think your fractions might be mixed up
Good tips, thanks!

For how much that bike costs. it should come with quality line to begin with

Pull out a few threads to taper it down
What diameter is that soft shackle?
So if its mounted upside down should you spool it over the top?
Also this is by far the most informative winch video I've found so far.
In general yes. can depend on the winch however.
Got the link to both the fairlead and rope?
Sure but they will be outdated in a day the way Amazon works
What size is that rope 3/16 50 ft?
Yes
What fairlead is that?
