Zelda in BOTW takes the cake for sure and rightfully so. I mean she loses everything! She loses her sworn protector for fucks sake, who is put in a 100 year coma in order to come back to finally put a stop to it. And I say TOTK is also really sad because she loses herself entirely!
But her actions also dishonored the memories of her champions and forced Link to betray his promise to Urbosa. Let alone break his heart knowing how her love for her knight is what awakened her powers in Breath of the Wild.

Unfortunately, Rauru could have the liberty to be a good friend because he truly didn't fear the ramifications of Ganondorf. Even in death, he just casually delegated his job to his sister, Zelda, and a distant successor through Link. Rhoam, on the other hand, didn't have the luxury to be her friend. Honestly, he probably had a hard time being a dad. Zelda's power isn't just some cool thing to flex around Hyrule, he is in genuine fear that if his daughter's powers don't open, that him, his family, and the entire kingdom will be wiped out.

He gets hoards of power and upgrades and be told by everyone he meets how great he is for the most part. Almost all his efforts are recognized and acknowledged in the moment to give the player validation. Zelda has to always be the pawn, soaked in suffering for ages.. so the player can feel motivated to beat the bad guy.
I remember in the Minish Cap that I failed to reach Vaati before the third bell chime, which meant all the Light Force from Zelda was drained which basically killed her. That's got to be the worst thing to happen to Zelda and definitely the number one moment in the Zelda series that scarred me for life!
I did that too and I was so pissed because I hadn't gotten a game over in this game previously so of course I lose my living streak by running out of time 😭
As stated by one Joshua Burner, Zelda being stuck as a Light Dragon is way worse than death when you factor in the various branching timelines of The Legend of Zelda franchise. In some timelines, it's possible that Zelda remained stuck as a Light Dragon for an ungodly amount of time.
Poor BOTW/TOTK Zelda went through SO MUCH. My girl makes the “worst things” list not once, but twice. BOTW’s event is exceptionally tragic (especially because she blames herself for everything), but the draconification in TOTK breaks me. Not only is the scene absolutely gut wrenching, but this all happens on top of her experience in BOTW. In BOTW, she loses everyone she loves. Then, in TOTK, she loses herself. She really does lose everything there is to lose, with no hope of getting it back. 😭 Shout out to The Adventure of Link’s Zelda, too. Being betrayed by your brother? Ouchhhh Poor Zelda. She always has so much to bear and to sacrifice. 💔
Having no companion story where players can play as her IN BOTH Skyward Sword and Tears of the Kingdom is also the WROST thing that has happened to Princess Zelda.

Since Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have the same Zelda, I'd say she might be the one that had to endure to most terrible situation of them all. Even when she sacrifices herself for Midna, giving up so much of her power to disappear, she isn't really suffering, she is showing resolve. Yeah she gets electrocuted a bit when Ganondorf possesses her and plays tennis with Link, though that doesn't last that much time. Though BotW Zelda first loses *literally everything and everyone* sealing herself with the calamity that caused all her suffering for 100 years, then when the kingdom is finally saved, a few years later she falls in a pit and has to experience that all over again and witness the fall of Sonia and Rauru, fight Ganondorf only to see him sealed again, and only then, turn into a dragon for something like 10.000 years to heal the Master Sword. It was kinda of a relief when in the ending she said she felt like if she slept for a long time, so maybe she forgot her life as a dragon. Though, she was absolutely at least half conscious while she was a dragon, and had to witness the Calamity all over again because of the time loop. If that isn't giving you PTSD, I don't know what else can.
Something I would add is Four Sword Adventures. In this instance, Vaati didn't kidnap her because she was the princess of Hyrule. He didn't really seem to care about Hyrule at all. He only took her because she was pretty and he wanted to make her his "bride." That is messed up.
Totk/Botw Zelda I think has had the roughest time. She lost everything, got sent through timr just to lose everything again, and turned into a dragon as a last resort.

I mean ye she lost it all in breath of the wild, but I find the one in tears of the kingdom more tragic. She sacrifices herself only for this 1 chance to Link in the future, putting all her efforts and energy into the mastersword, knowing she will not recognize Link, knowing she will never return to whom she once was. Sure enough she does turn back but still, she went in with the thought she wouldn't. That is how much faith she put in him, how much she loves him, you could say.
I'd say becoming the Light Dragon was just slightly worse than losing everything. What's worse than grieving everyone you ever cared for for over 100 years? Doing smth that you know will make you lose all your memories of them and accepting that you'll never ever remember them again.
Definitely draconification was the most tragic. She does everything for her people and her kingdom. She's the BEST Zelda in my opinion (botw/TOTK Zelda)

For those who do not know, Zelda’s love for Link unlocks her sealing powers in both Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity timelines. As actor like Zelda can truly unlock her powers by requiring a strong motivation.
Almost all of these Zeldas are all different people who share the same name. Also, for #1, you left out how she had to fight Calamity Ganon alone for 100 years before Link awoke.
Being turned into a dragon is worse than losing everything in botw. Before you jump down my throat... remember, she spent thousands of years as a dragon. That means she did get to experience what had happened in botw again on some level.
if I'm being honest, while I was playing Tears of the Kingdom, I was shocked to find out that the Light Dragon IS Zelda, I know Minaru warned his that swallowing a sacred stone would mean losing your humanity, and sense of self, but this was her choice, if there was any way to restore the Master Sword, she had to make that decision if Link has any chance in destroying the Demon King Ganondorf once and for all.
What about Zelda’s kidnapping in The Wind Waker? Shouldn’t it be on this list as well? After Ganondorf found out that Tetra is Zelda, Link and the king had to leave her in the castle all by herself. In the meantime Link had to restore power to the Master Sword and recover the Triforce Shards. However, a lot can happen in that period of time and it somehow bought Ganon time to break into the castle and steal Zelda. So, I guess finding the sages, fixing up the Master Sword, and scavenging the shards was all just a big distraction for Link and he did exactly what Ganon wanted him to and led Zelda into a trap as wall as Link. I’m disappointed that wasn’t mentioned on this list.
The worst thing happened to Zelda is when she fell from her bird's ride in the Sky in The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword and when she turned into a whole diffrent person in Twilight Princess. Am I a diffrent Zelda fan if Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess defienitily Twilight Princess are my favourite Zelda games? Those are my 2 first-ever-played Zelda games on the Nintendo Wii Era in my childhood. Wolf is my favourite animal and I love Midna who's more beautier than Zelda herself just in my opinion. Love Twilight Princess and hope it's coming finally to Nintendo Switch in someday! 😊❤
For me it‘s the worst in totk. The events of btow was horrible enough. But when she travelled back in time and turned to the dragon, she needed to go through all of the Bad events that happend until to the present time of totk. And not only again seeing everybody being killed but also seeing how her mother was passing away. Totk doesn‘t mention that but it‘s a logical thing. The only good thing is, Zelda said it was like she was sleeping all the time when she was a dragon. But still the imagination going through all of this again is unbearable. 😢 Ps: To make it even more logical. The Ouroboros is a sign of the timetravel and living through all of the events again. There should have been the light dragon in btow as well. Only showing it but making it unreachable for link and make it apear seldom. This would be another thing that would make Zelda fans blown away. I mean the light dragon could be made really hard to be spotted by not using any music or other sounds or visual effects. 😅 just leaving question marks in everybodies‘ brain.
I want an interaction of the game we get to play as Zelda obviously she’s overpowered for simple gameplay being a literally reincarnation of a goddess but I do think earlier before her powers are unlocked having the ability to follow her story more it’s something the community have wanted for forever but it’s never happened yet there’s so many story elements it could bring

The botw Zelda is the closest character to being like me. She literally also wears white and blue as well as also having blond hair and green eyes. Also, I was born into a religious family with religious experiences who have no trouble connecting to god and having their prayers answered. And then there’s me. When I pray for something, the complete opposite happens. My family talks about their religious experiences while I sit there having nothing to share. My dad is hard on me for being different and because my mental issues keep my mom down. The only difference I have with botw Zelda is the fact I have no friends to help me carry the burden of not knowing my purpose or what makes me special.
I’ve only played BOTW and TOTK and neither story captured me. I didn’t feel for anyone and I don’t get why people like Zelda. I could care less about her struggles so that’s likely where the disconnect comes from😅.

if I'm being honest, while I was playing Tears of the Kingdom, I was shocked to find out that the Light Dragon IS Zelda, I know Minaru warned his that swallowing a sacred stone would mean losing your humanity, and sense of self, but this was her choice, if there was any way to restore the Master Sword, she had to make that decision if Link has any chance in destroying the Demon King Ganondorf once and for all.

What about Zelda’s kidnapping in The Wind Waker? Shouldn’t it be on this list as well? After Ganondorf found out that Tetra is Zelda, Link and the king had to leave her in the castle all by herself. In the meantime Link had to restore power to the Master Sword and recover the Triforce Shards. However, a lot can happen in that period of time and it somehow bought Ganon time to break into the castle and steal Zelda. So, I guess finding the sages, fixing up the Master Sword, and scavenging the shards was all just a big distraction for Link and he did exactly what Ganon wanted him to and led Zelda into a trap as wall as Link. I’m disappointed that wasn’t mentioned on this list.

The worst thing happened to Zelda is when she fell from her bird's ride in the Sky in The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword and when she turned into a whole diffrent person in Twilight Princess. Am I a diffrent Zelda fan if Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess defienitily Twilight Princess are my favourite Zelda games? Those are my 2 first-ever-played Zelda games on the Nintendo Wii Era in my childhood. Wolf is my favourite animal and I love Midna who's more beautier than Zelda herself just in my opinion. Love Twilight Princess and hope it's coming finally to Nintendo Switch in someday! 😊❤

For me it‘s the worst in totk. The events of btow was horrible enough. But when she travelled back in time and turned to the dragon, she needed to go through all of the Bad events that happend until to the present time of totk. And not only again seeing everybody being killed but also seeing how her mother was passing away. Totk doesn‘t mention that but it‘s a logical thing. The only good thing is, Zelda said it was like she was sleeping all the time when she was a dragon. But still the imagination going through all of this again is unbearable. 😢
Ps: To make it even more logical. The Ouroboros is a sign of the timetravel and living through all of the events again. There should have been the light dragon in btow as well. Only showing it but making it unreachable for link and make it apear seldom. This would be another thing that would make Zelda fans blown away. I mean the light dragon could be made really hard to be spotted by not using any music or other sounds or visual effects. 😅 just leaving question marks in everybodies‘ brain.

The botw Zelda is the closest character to being like me. She literally also wears white and blue as well as also having blond hair and green eyes. Also, I was born into a religious family with religious experiences who have no trouble connecting to god and having their prayers answered. And then there’s me. When I pray for something, the complete opposite happens. My family talks about their religious experiences while I sit there having nothing to share. My dad is hard on me for being different and because my mental issues keep my mom down. The only difference I have with botw Zelda is the fact I have no friends to help me carry the burden of not knowing my purpose or what makes me special.
