- A quick look at a refurbishment project I have been running in the background to restore these Clay Paky Scanners to full working condition. I also show a project to convert DMX to PMX.

Brilliant work on such a classic effect. Thank you.
Wow - blast from the past there. I used to do a lot of side-projects for Richard Martin Lighting back then. I recall visiting Clay Paky with Richard to negotiate the purchase of his first few units. I designed and built a portable controller for him that was based on the operational design of a Thornlite 120 studio lighting desk so the LDs would be familiar with it. A friend did the software, I did the hardware.
As one commenter said, they used these a lot on TOTP, Richard supplied their lights for a very long time.
Before the Scans came along, and for a fair while after, I did control boxes for quite a lot of Richard's lights. I confess to being responsible for a rash of UFO sightings in my local area....one light unit in particular made the local papers. I was testing a control unit of one of his latest creations, in my garage, firing it out onto the clouds on a dark and somewhat misty night. The effect was simple enough - HMI lamp, strips of mirror attached to a flexible rotating & articulating platform, with a selection of dichroic filters. This created bars of light that span and zoomed, depending on what you did with the actuators. Happy days...
Thanks for that. They are still a fantastic fixture. A timeless classic that doesn't look dated. I think they're much better than moving head. What an informative video. Fascinating. Good luck mate! David.
Hi Steve, really enjoyed the video as usual. I'm always impressed with the quality of your work - very clear voice with precise description of what you're doing and no incessant editing!
Thanks dogastus!
Thanks for posting.. these lamps were very expensive and only some few nightclubs here i Denmark got them. :)
Just picked one up and love your video, thankyou
This video very welcome.....as it's nice to be reminded of DMX, it's been a good number of years. NJD Merlin 256ch lighting desk programming fun!
I remember when I was a lot younger and Maplin had opened their Maplin Superstore in Nottingham - they had a little stage at the side of the store with all the NJD gear set up so you could play with all the lights. I used to drool over NJD gear as all the new effects were starting to be released.
Goldenscan HMI's are one of my favourite effects - Even if I hated looking after them in niightclubs, Amazingly versatile and fairly reliable if you care for them, But if you go over on the life of the lamp and it explodes it makes a HUGE mess - Often smashes optics, Bits of glass get stuck in the gobo rotation teeth, I've even seen it take one of the fans out, Should do a good job at keeping your workshop warm too! Clay Paky were "CP&P" at one point, Also owned Jem smoke/fog machines (Clay Paky and Pulsar) - Clay Paky are now owned by Osram
Thanks for the info. I still plan to see if an LED conversion is feasible on these whilst keeping a decent light output. I've got a total of 4 complete units and one that did have an exploded lamp. An LED conversion would get rid of the heavy ballasts.
It'd be amazing if you can pull it off but 110000 Lumen from LED may be a bit of a tall order! I did notice you have one of the very early incarnations of the goldenscan, Later/Higher models had rotating gobo, Rotating distortion effects and even 3 separate graduated colour wheels so you could "mix colour" in the unit, I don't think people realise just how heavy they are until you are up a scaffold trying to get them out of a lightrig, I'd completely forgotten the horrific sound of powering a large lightrig and hearing all the intelligent lights finding home positions - and hopefully not a huge bang as a lamp explodes
@sdgelectronics hi from 2023. I'm wondering if you had any success with this LED conversion? Be awesome to remove some of the weight from these.
It was actually very interesting!
Thanks for sharing this....enjoyed it.
Thanks :) will do.
I remember top of the pops used a load of these till they moved on to martin mac 500s and mac600s
nice video Steve
Thanks!
That was awesome! What did you end up doing with them? These were the first lights I really took notice of when I first started clubbing/raving back in 1995, I just loved them! I even (tried) to make my own for my bedroom using an old 200W slide projector and two motors from one of those dancing flowers I got as a stocking filler hahahaha - Made the Gobos from cut card and colours acetate :) Great days - Enjoyed that, thanks.
hello would you have more details for the rs232 (pmx) to dmx interface
I'm heading to your website to see if you sell your conversion thingy from 7:20min into this vid. I just picked up 6 Golden scans converted down to 575's
Um can you give me quote to make and post to Australia?
When is the next video??? i can't wait!!!
Hello, nice job, tx for the videos, one question, i also have six pieces and hope to make 4 complete but how do i disconect the power suply for the lamp? if i just remove the bubl it's not ok? Just to test all the functions? Tx
At the terminal connector where the AC supply enters, there is one pair of wires that goes to the little transformer and another much larger pair which goes off to the lamp circuitry. Just disconnect those wires.
+SDG Electronics ok, i will try that. thank you :-)
Bro! I'm waiting for your video on impedance matching!...
It's on my list!
Hi, interesting video. Thanks for doing it. You mentioned Mike with reference to dmx. Which Mike is that?
mikeselectricstuff I expect :) well worth subbing to if you haven't
Yep, mikeselectricstuff. I think he's on my featured channels on my channel page if you can't find him.
Sir Steve, when are you doing a new video?
Hopefully soon. I've just moved house so everything is packed away at the moment!
Well, "soon" is over after my definition. 😀 Really miss your videos.
sounds like the computer from alien
For controlling dmx lights you should use something like www.avolites.com/products/lighting/titan-one or a cheaper clone.
Thanks, I did look at this. The BitWizard is pretty good though, it can emulate many interfaces and is fully isolated.
..... Do not use this outdoors, it's possible 'Batman' could inadvertently be summoned !
