  • If you're anything like me, you find Olympic football - or at least the men's tournament - a bit...underwhelming to say the very least. Football is the world's game, and the Olympics is the world's event - so you're probably wondering, why is football such a peculiar case at the Olympic Games? There's a couple reasons, let's find out together, and be sure to let me know what your theory is.

Some teams don't even bring their best U-23 players. They have to get approval from their clubs to play. This would never happen for the World Cup or the Euros.

@Luso00_ and think of all the u-23 players who would've just had Euro/Copa América campaigns. Great point, seems like there's just way too many setbacks.

That final (France vs. Spain) was an instant classic. As a Spaniard, I'm really happy that we got the Euro/Olympic double this summer.

I think it’s because they don’t want the Olympics to overshadow the World Cup

@DM-wt5ss Good point. World Cup currently draws in equal or more viewers than the Olympics, makes sense if they want to keep it they way. Appreciate your comment, hope you enjoyed!

Dude, the golden age of football at the olympics was between the two WW's. After that West Europe and South America gave up the olympics for the World cup and the continental tournaments. For a while football at the olympics was still relevant in the East Europe, but they also created teams composed by young and/or less talented players, just to be there and keep safe the legs of the best players. In the early 1990's olympic teams became a norm. Now there's too much tournaments and games to torment the senior players with the olympics too, especially in Europe. The Euros and the nations league and the new club season when they are supposed to rest if they would go at the olympics too?

@crimsondragon5742 Appreciate your comment, really good point. Fixture congestion is such an issue with the game today, for a lot of players the Olympics just isn't worth it I guess.
