Even though MAMA weirdly did not give their award to Lee Hi, I'm glad so many people voted for her. (She had a total of almost 5.3 million votes -- almost 4 million more votes than the group that got the award.). It shows how much her singing is appreciated and those of us who voted for her know that she's the real Rookie of the Year. I hope YG noticed and will continue to give her a lot of support in her musical career.
The MAMA awards looks at fan voting, music charts, and judges. She won at the fan voting, but not on the music charts or judges.
Taylor Simon Actually, the fan voting was just the icing on the cake. Lee Hi definitely won on the music charts. 1234 alone, achieved an "all-kill," 11 "roof kicks" and dominated all major charts for 25 consecutive days). In addition to 1234, It's Over and Rose also achieved number 1 status and impressive results on the charts. I could go on and on.. and on, believe me. Virtually any objective measure that can be considered puts her overwhelmingly ahead. But the Crayon Poppers did have more helmets, pogo sticks and a promotional contract with the corporation that owns/operates MAMA, so there is that. LoL! Oh, and they signed up with Sony Music at least 3 months ago. (The WSJ reported that Sony wants to see them go viral like Gangnam style, so it's pretty obvious that getting the MAMA award was a big publicity objective.)
The only thing that prevented Lee Hi from taking the award was the mysterious decision made by "judges" (whoever they were), based on ambiguous and undisclosed criteria. (Also one of the weird things was that the group that got the award actually debuted much earlier in 2012 (long before last year's voting/decision making and probably should have been candidates for last year's award instead of this year's.)
In any case, I've always known that most award programs are subject to business politics of various kinds and conflicts of interest, but they do get it right about half the time (for the sake of appearances, if nothing else). I was hoping that Lee Hi was going to be one of the cases where they got it right. But no such luck. Oh well, I have more respect for her talent than ever and the result of the MAMA decision just made me have a bit less respect for MAMA.
Taylor Simon I should add that there are numerous other objective stats that could be looked at that show she dominated among the field of candidates. Just one example, her physical album sales alone put her at number one (in Korea) among female solo artists (until IU went to number 1 in that category just recently) and among debuting artists...and that was with one of the highest priced albums on the market (compared to sales volume figures in many cases for other performers' mini-albums going for 1/3 or lower prices).
Just another example, she won a triple crown on Mnet's M-Countdown for 1234, as well as 1 crown for Rose and 1 for it's over. None of the other candidates for the new artist award this year even came close to matching Lee HI's record for the past year.
Agreed. She really deserved that award, but she is super talented none the less!
Lam Huynh Well, it's obvious that MAMA made business deals to use the award to give publicity, rather than using any objective criteria for the new artist award. It's not just a matter of pleasing the public and having a "big and crazy" fandom (although those are very valid considerations in pop music). In her category, Lee Hi was top in every important, measurable criteria, and demonstrated an impressive range of styles, vocal artistry and overall musicality (the very factors that should be heavily weighted in a new "artist" category) in her album that was far ahead of any other contenders.
So it came down to a set of MAMA-appointed judges making a decision behind closed doors, for undisclosed reasons that defied logic and common sense--unless you realize that the outcome was just a business deal to provide a MAMA publicity moment that had been decided long in advance.
You're right and I think people are taking MAMA less and less seriously as the years go by--mainly because of the absence of transparencey and the failure to follow objective criteria in the awards process (revealing that just about everything is a scripted outcome based on business deals).

Okay, I'm not saying that the rest of k-pop is soulless, but I think Lee Hi, has the most soul out of them all.
check out Ali, Lee Sojung and Lee Haeri if you like the soulfulness :D
Ali is good, and supposedly is the best female vocalist, in Korea; but I wouldn't qualify her as a soulful singer. If anything, she has fake soul, which is still a step ahead of some of the others, as long as were talking about soul. Yes, what I say is harsh, and no, fake soul doesn't mean she is fake. To me, fake soul is simply not having enough of that rasp in your voice. Trust me, I have nothing wrong with Ali, but I don't think she is haha...even close to Lee Hi on the scale of soul. Keep in mind, this is from judging one song that she sang in front of Yim Jaebeum at Immortal songs 2/Bool hoo eui myung gog 2
Lee So Jung has the same style of soul that I mentioned Lee Hi having. It is almost like listening to the same person....Almost. I think Lee Hi still has more soul, but I think Lee So Jung has more experience singing, and is an all around Better singer. Soul doesn't mean everything to me, as you can tell.
As far as Lee Hae Lee goes, I love her voice, but don't think she has the soul I be talkin' about. And again, that doesn't mean everything. Lee Hae Lee sounds just find the way she is. You may not agree with everything I have written here, but I like talking about artists. I am a singer myself and recognize the talent that comes from Korea. Dae Han Meen Goog!

Personally i think soul isn't just rasp in your voice, which Ali has :D, but raw emotion, and if you knew anything about Ali's past you would realize how amazing she is, and how she is so superb compared to everyone in Korea. While i respect your opinion, i disagree. and i am a music major, and i find Sojung and Lee Hayi and Ali and Haeri to be very soulful and amazing :D

I'm sure if I knew anybody's past, I would realize something about them. We still don't see eye to eye though, if you think Lee Hae Lee has soul. She just sounds like a commonly good singer to me. I don't hear anything special, but that is just me. Can you give me a song you love by her, so I can see what you love about her? The only one I heard was Sunflower. I wasn't amazed by it.
