I am a Japanese person living in Tokyo. "Zero" signifies the state where Japan lost everything due to air raids, atomic bombings, and defeat. Tokyo, the setting of this movie, experienced 106 air raids, resulting in the complete destruction of the city. About 117,000 people, mostly elderly, women, and children, lost their lives. The title of the film reflects the negative impact, becoming "minus one" after Godzilla's arrival and the destruction of Tokyo.
Thank you so much for the clarification good sir. As a former military man, I lived in your beautiful country for 3 years. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.
I Just commented this about the lead on another review lol. He was truly incredible. His take on trauma and anxiety and how he dealt with it felt so real. He had me in tears on multiple occasions.
If you love that type of acting, I recommend watching Rurouni Kenshin live action series. The main lead from Minus One played as a supporting character in there.
Yea the actors for Koichi and Noriko both deserve awards for their acting. I mean the words they say to each other especially one of the last phrases when 1 of them says to the other "Is your war finally over" that hit so deep and emotional, i was like fuuuuuuuuuck. Even the little girl in the movie had emotional words and they were mostly short and simple words, she tugged at your heart asking for mommy and daddy, i mean everyone in this movie did a phenomenal job and its rare to see every character including the background characters effect your emotions about them all.
That doesn't work that way, unfortunately. Academy Awards are a Hollywood only club. The best it can hope for is a nomination in token "Best International Feature Film" category.
First Godzilla movie I've seen at the theater since the '70s and I couldn't have been more impressed. And for only $15 million? Extraordinary. The way they mixed and paced the action sequences with the more dramatic segments reminded me of Jaws. Loved it, one of my favorites of the year.
I saw it today with a friend who's not as big as a Godzilla fan as me, but he really liked it & I LOVED IT!!! Kudos to the director & everyone involved with this movie b/c it was EPIC!!! I even got excited when I heard the original Akira Ifukube Godzilla theme & got even more excited when I heard the musical score from the, "Original", King Kong vs Godzilla movie. My only regret, is that a good friend of mine, who was as big as a Godzilla fan as me, recently passed away & I KNOW, that he would of LOVED this movie too!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!
Yeah this movie fuckin rules. Saw it once on a smaller screen with my daughter, and we’re dragging the rest of the family back tomorrow to see it together at the IMAX. I pity anybody who sleeps through the theatrical run, this is definitely one to see on a big screen with a crowd.
Just got back from seeing it and BRAVO! This is what happens when you take time to think about a movie, get the right team together, and are unfettered by corporate box checking. This movie is about shame and rebuilding yourself to be the person you want to be. Americans can learn so much from this film.
Even as a veteran fan myself, the direction of Minus One is among the best the series has had for a good while and the actors gave incredible performances. Godzilla especially is given a lot more character too which is greatly helped by the fact the film actually shows us how he went from regular dinosaur to vengeful monster, which adds more power to both him and the story emotionally (something that was only ever implied or explained in the past). There’s a lot of potential for what they can do for a follow up and I hope Toho takes advantage of that.
My entire family went and watched it at IMAX. Everyone, including my 11 year old daughter that could care less about Kaiju movies loved it. Such great characters and story along with great Godzilla action too. It is my favorite of the year.
It blows my mind this movie only cost 15 million dollars to make mean while Hollywood burns hundreds of millions of dollars on garbage disposal products that are so forgettable
Everyone should look into the history of the Yukikaze destroyer (ship our heroes are on). Its fascinating, it had a bad luck reputation. It was never damaged on its its escort missions (it did take one bomb hit) while ships around it were always destroyed. Its final reputation builder was its escort of the Yamato when it was destroyed. Great movie!
It was great. I took my girlfriend and little brother, and we all loved it! But i didn't hear you notice the thing on Norikos neck in the final scene? It was moving, and I'm definitely thinking she only lived cause she got some Godzilla blood somehow
honestly the perfect first Toho Godzilla review. This movie was amazing and for the budget that it was made on OMG!!! Hollywood need to take notes. Especially watching the trailer for Godzilla x Kong the new empire which looks garbage in comparison. Also the minus one is explained in a trailer. The war set Japan to 0 with nothing left then godzilla comes along and causes more chaos essentially sending them into the minus
This movie is almost tied with Shin Godzilla (creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion). This movie is fantastic, beautiful and puts to shame the American versions. Favorite movie of the year for sure!
I recommend to watch same director's "Eternal Zero" after or before watching Godzilla mimus one. That's also good movie describing kamikaze pilots and their family.
I looked it up Lee. Minus One is in reference to Japan having been devastated by US bombs, being in the negative and now having to face Godzilla. Great video as always bro!
I snuck out of work a little early to catch an afternoon showing before Christmas. There were mostly men in the theater I saw it in. When the scenes went silent, you could hear them all whimpering like babies. Not me, them. I took it like a man! 😭😭😭
As a 25 year old who basically who grew up with Godzilla especially when my first introduction with it is Godzilla Vs Hedorah at the age of three with a high fever, that psychedelic film will definitely ingrained in my mind forever…I knew that lizard was gonna something special. And I grew up with kong too thanks to the Jackson adaptation. That being said I’m glad we coming back to the serious route of the franchise, it captures a lot of what the original 1954 was along with a fresh coat of new paint. This, Shin and the original is the epitome of why I have a heart for kaiju films. You can just turn your brain off with Godzilla tail kicking a bug on Godzilla Vs Megalon, the Jump Taunt on Astro Monster or you can enjoy the underlying message and themes. There’s a monster movie for everyone!
I loved an earlier movie by the same Takashi Yamazaki “Always” and noticed the same melodramatic qualities with this Godzilla movie. Some people said they did not like the drama because it was too emotional but I personally like it that way, and so it is in this Godzilla too.
Saw it tonight at IMAX and it was excellent! Probably the most engaging with story and character since the early films; I'll even agree since the original 1954 film, especially with the post-war climate and complexities. As much as I liked Shin and the Legendary Godzilla movies (for their part), this blows them all away. Never seen his breath make a nuclear blast so overtly. That was a cinematic revelation. Musically, the score carries a lot of weight to great effect, and hearing the old themes brought me a smile. I can support the notion of this being in the top tier of all Godzilla movies.
@DrumDums this is absolutely fantastic, as much as I enjoy me a good schlocky MonsterVerse film with Godzilla in it, I loved that I actually gave a damn about the human characters in a Godzilla film for once, I just got around to my first viewing of Godzilla Minus One on Netflix, I just finished it and I have to say, I am honestly kicking myself for not using my AMC A-List membership to go check this out when it was in theaters last winter but, hopefully they have a re release sometime in the near future that I can do that
we went and saw it yesterday and we both loved it. As someone who was raised on godzilla ,this is the best godzilla movie i've seen in years. Definitely want to see it again in the theater...my favorite of the year
I saw it today, loved it. I don’t usually see subtitled movies and have never seen a Toho Godzilla movie. The characters, story, setting, acting, special effects, practical sets. All great
10/10. I had 3 minor nitpicks. When I heard people saying it might be the best movie of the year I couldn't believe it. But I might agree after seeing it. Edit: Minus one is because it's a "prequel" to the original. It's the only one to take place in the 40's. Every other movie is 50's or later.
My wife an I saw it today, and we're convinced that this film deserves a nomination for best foreign film or even best picture of the year. We both cried at the end. Just brilliant. I think the title was a mix-up. It should have been pronoucced "G-1", as in, the moment before an event, ;like "T-1" before a bomb goes off. I feel like it almost wasn't a Godzilla movie. It was the story of a broken man, which just happened to take place during the emergence of a monster.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt impacted by the 1976 King Kong, because so many people trash that movie. I was just a kid, but I remember crying for Kong at the end just as much as I did for E.T. Minus One and the 1954 Godzilla are the only instances where I care more for the humans.
The minus 1 stands for at that time Japan was at level zero as a country from being decimated by the war…Godzilla coming along shortly after took them down even another notch (-1).
World War II left Japan in a shambles. On a numbered scale, they said it was at "zero." When Godzilla came, the destruction was made worse and Japan fell to a "minus one" condition.
LOVED this film. 1 complaint though..when Godzilla visits Ginza and Noriko is on the train for work. Shikishima just happens to find her on the ground? They could have just had the couple visiting Ginza for whatever reason and then Godzilla visits. Also at the end..she could have had looked more beat up.
Awesome video Drumdums hope you're well my Awesome friend . I love the Japanese Godzilla films . Godzilla has always beer my favorite movie monster . I hope too see Godzilla minus one soon .
@DrumDums I finally caught this movie on Netflix today and I normally don’t do this but, I’m seriously thinking about downloading it to my iPad and watching it a second time within 2 days while I’m on the airplane going to visit my brother and his wife for 2 weeks or so in Florida, it’s just that great, and it’s a rarity I watch a movie a second time within the span of 2 days unless it’s extremely good and this one definitely is. It might be my favorite movie from 2023 even though I just now saw this in summer 2024 finally.
Your review is simply fantastic👍 This, Godzilla Minus One, is such a masterpiece and the best out of all Godzilla movies in the past. Anyway, soooo glad to see someone like you love my country’s film👍
Loved the special effects. It also had a good story. Godzilla looked absolutely amazing. I just couldn’t take the subtitles for the entire film, brought it down a lot for me.
King Kong broke me! Still makes cry whenever I think about it. But Godzilla is the real king imo. I grew up with those dopey b-movies, and they made me fall in love with Godzilla. Glad to see him back in villain form though. It’s how it should be. 😎
I finally saw it today, and I really enjoyed it. Normally, I'm not a big Godzilla fan, and I grew up watching the 1998 Roland Emmerich film. Godzilla Minus One is the first Japanese film I've ever seen.
Absolutely love your honest reviews. The nuclear attacks and fire bombings on Japan at the end of 1945 knocked the people to ground zero. Godzilla took them from zero to minus one. Shikishima's breakdown, where he questioned the reality of his survival, was my favorite scene. You could hear people crying throughout the theater.
I didn't realize that it was a prequel as I don't know much about Godzilla...I pretty much an King Kong guy myself... I want to see this however and now that I know that it's a prequel...maybe the Minus One means just that...a prequel...
I love that Toho really knows how to make a great Godzilla movie with great emotion & action. I just saw the new trailer for Godzilla X Kong & all I see is an overdose of CGI & more annoying actors. Really after watching this movie I am just not feeling that upcoming movie anymore
My son and I enjoyed this movie. My son collects Godzilla. This movie gave me old school Godzilla vibes. Toho definately proves they can make Godzilla like no other.
They spend this movie’s budget on catering for big budget films, yet this delivers more emotion and entertainment, and an amazing Godzilla. Truly well done by everyone involved.
The Toho films are awesome. Gojira (1954) / Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956) Godzilla 1985 Godzilla 1990s Godzilla millennium series They are all awesome. I like the American ones too, but Japan owns Godzilla in so many ways.
This was actually my first Godzilla film and I was very impressed, i love and deeply heart on international films if I compared to modern u.s versions I would say probably hit or miss with modern u.s. version and with international films they have a better character developments, better cinematography, better cgi mix practical, and better stories. Godzilla Minus One wow first off after I rated this film a solid golden plaque of 10 out of 10. This was also a horror film and I was not surprised and I did not saw the trailer because I went to see this blindfolded. So definitely a solid gold 10 out of 10.
Man I’m truly baffled this film only cost $15M & looked this fantastic with its action sequences and not look like a bloated CGI-fest that costs $150M+. I thought this was super intense & thrilling, excellent story & the characters hooked me in. ~8.8/10
I kinda wish some people would stop comparing this movie this is a single movie to the MonsterVerse as though the recent King of the Monsters movie when it came to the amount of Kaiju monsters fighting also I wasn’t expecting it being as much of a war movie it wasn’t bad it’s actually excellent but I just went a little bit of that preparation before hand Minus One gets a 96% while I’m moderately a Godzilla fan more than King Kong but of the decade of Godzilla we’ve gotten I’ve liked this included also I like the addition SPOILERS:of a death subversion in the RIGHT WAY child thief turned family I equate this to being a Japanese 1917 with Godzilla and as a bit of an apology for the loss to WW2 hopefully this makes sense.
@@DrumdumsOfficial I’m not a massive massive fan of them I like them but I was on a small MonsterVerse kick last week do to the new Apple TV+ series which from what I saw was outstanding but a little too early to tell for now the Godzilla Minus One* moments are terrific I do however feel that the moments are a little too heavy for a Godzilla movie but I understand you have to have stakes it sometimes just seemed a bit too heavy if that makes sense
Spoiler alert, did you notice that black thing creeping up her neck in the ending? She’s infected by Godzilla’s cell. That’s the only reason she survived that blast. Godzilla rejuvenates itself, thus she being infected by it she rejuvenated. In the sequence where Ginza is destroyed, you can hear the radio saying there’s Godzilla’s skin and meat particles flown all over the city along with radiation.I believe that’s when she was infected. And that probably is going lead into the sequel if they ever have another one by Director Yamazaki. And if you look closely that black thing creeping up her neck looks like Godzilla’s spikes.
I went through a foreign film phase in my 30s, they're great. I just kind of quit watching movies in general.... This year was a high movie watch for me, and I watched three. I think it's the subtitles that turn off Americans.
If you really dive deep on this movie, the ending is still sad. The mark on her neck is the same as the black rain: The effects of radiation poisoning. Their suffering is not over. But what a great movie!
My jaw dropped when Noriko supposedly perished. It was already dropped from just the pure terror that Godzilla was unleashing and that glorious atomic breath but this movie just doesn't want your mouth to close LOL. And I absolutely love the last line Noriko said to Koichi in the end. "Is your war over now?" 🥹
It's so refreshing to watch a movie that doesn't have a checklist of inclusivity to fulfill. It's just a great story with well written characters. I miss that.
Godzilla finally has even footing with his colleague Kong whose 1933 film(35 cent ticket, took time with no TV & Internet) put him INSIDE our soul. Minus one is the Godzilla more than a monster movie soul saving turn we need today as King Kong was needed back then ❤. Think about what happen after WWII, we rebuilt it instead of enslave it as the United States could have. Minus one is to prevent WWIII esp. internationally(quicker with TV and Internet) because with Nukes there will be nothing to rebuild 🎉 ? Oojhf
I have a movie poster that my cousin gave it to me. I just finished Silent Night (2023). I know it came out the same time as Godzila Minus One. To be honest with you, John Woo was a perfect refresh since I wanna say Paycheck from 2003, the better John Woo Directed was Face/Off. After seeing Silent Night, I was amazed and definitely body vibrant all the action scenes yes its bloody, and yes, it's sad in the scenes. It's still in theaters if you wanna check this one out when it gets closer. (Fist bump my friend) 👊🙂

Man I've been wondering what the title means and this is such a good explanation. Thank you. Even the title of this movie is brilliant
Less than zero in other words.
So if there is a sequel, are we getting "minus 2", or "zero"?
The acting by the main lead was oscar worthy. He should be nominated. And this film should definitely be nominated for best picture.
Yeah he was flat out amazing. So much passion.

Yep. Might be the best creature feature since Jaws for sure.
My family and I all absolutely LOVED it! Even the human story was - for once - most excellent and never stupid or boring.
Yep. A high brow creature feature for a change.

Yes I LOVED the music in this. Very heartfelt.
I saw it on a regular screen because I couldn’t get a prime time IMAX. Still so worth it.
Just got back from seeing it and BRAVO! This is what happens when you take time to think about a movie, get the right team together, and are unfettered by corporate box checking. Perfectly stated!

Well $30 million or more always goes to whatever actor/actress that they hire to pander to whatever agenda is being pushed at the time.
Yep. Insane.
Everyone should look into the history of the Yukikaze destroyer (ship our heroes are on). Its fascinating, it had a bad luck reputation. Ooh I didn't notice that! Very cool!
Just got out of the theater. They just put Hollywood on notice. What a great time at the movies.
Damn right they did.
I loved this movie. Best Godzilla movie since the original. It was my favorite theater experience of 2023.
Great review.
Mine too.
Movie had a beautiful story and a lot of heart! I enjoyed it!
I totally agree!

I heard Godzilla 2014 director Gareth Edwards saw this and felt embarrassed by his own movie.
@@DrumdumsOfficial i can believe that. I think it's a little harsh on himself but I can understand.

I need to see Shin G.
I recommend to watch same director's "Eternal Zero" after or before watching Godzilla mimus one.

Took my son Friday night. We were not disappointed!
Minus One was stated by the studio as like a prequel or return to the original Godzilla
I really enjoyed watching it with my son. Great bonding moment for us.

Agreed.
Best picture of the year, the actors deserve an oscar, this Godzilla looked amazing, totally loved this movie!!
Yeah he was so damn amazing.
Godzilla minus one that Godzilla is the best ever! Also this movie was made around 15 million dollars!!!!

I finally saw it today, and I really enjoyed it. Normally, I'm not a big Godzilla fan, and I grew up watching the 1998 Roland Emmerich film. Godzilla Minus One is the first Japanese film I've ever seen.
Most Japanese films that I've seen are top notch.
Thank you!
I was hoping this would be good.
Yeah their timing was right and wrong for that trailer haha.
My son and I enjoyed this movie. My son collects Godzilla. This movie gave me old school Godzilla vibes. Toho definately proves they can make Godzilla like no other.
Awesome!
Movie of the year for me
They spend this movie’s budget on catering for big budget films, yet this delivers more emotion and entertainment, and an amazing Godzilla. Truly well done by everyone involved.
It's a prequel to the 1953 Godzilla. Hence, the Minus One
For the title, I'm thinking it refers to Godzilla losing lol! Gonna check this out! cheers
Don’t miss this! See it on the big screen.
My movie of the year. Wish I saw it in imax though.
Same!
The Toho films are awesome.
Gojira (1954) / Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956)
Godzilla 1985
Godzilla 1990s
Godzilla millennium series
They are all awesome. I like the American ones too, but Japan owns Godzilla in so many ways.
Nice Review
Mr. Lee
It was so so good. Made the American versions look so cheap and dare I say it "Marvel"
Yep!
Yeah this movie was pretty much perfect.
Epic tshirt
Dolly rules.
From what I've heard, Godzilla Minus One is proof that you can make the human characters in a kaiju film interesting and entertaining.
❤
Man I’m truly baffled this film only cost $15M & looked this fantastic with its action sequences and not look like a bloated CGI-fest that costs $150M+. I thought this was super intense & thrilling, excellent story & the characters hooked me in. ~8.8/10
Just goes to show how passionate the filmmakers are on all trades in Japan.
Have you seen the movie RRR and jawan
Not yet.
Japan was at 0 after the war. Godzilla came after the war and did more damage - so they are at -1.
I thought this was a masterpiece…. And for me to say that about a Godzilla movie…. !!!
I know right!
Best Godzilla movie ever...no doubt. Magnificent.
I can’t help myself. I love big monster movies and love talking about them.
Wish Legendary had the guts to be as political as modern Toho Godzilla.
Yes someone mentioned that. Really interesting.
I went through a foreign film phase in my 30s, they're great. I just kind of quit watching movies in general.... This year was a high movie watch for me, and I watched three. I think it's the subtitles that turn off Americans.
I started watching foreign films about 7 years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
But does it sound like I got something there? Or am I enjoying too much of our vitacan Florida made stuff
If you really dive deep on this movie, the ending is still sad. The mark on her neck is the same as the black rain: The effects of radiation poisoning. Their suffering is not over. But what a great movie!
Yep. Agreed
I’m going to have to watch it a second time in order to be sure though
Do you consider Jurassic Park a creature feature?
Of course!
An amazing film!
My jaw dropped when Noriko supposedly perished. It was already dropped from just the pure terror that Godzilla was unleashing and that glorious atomic breath but this movie just doesn't want your mouth to close LOL. And I absolutely love the last line Noriko said to Koichi in the end. "Is your war over now?" 🥹
Yeah that scene was such a shock
Godzilla:Minus One is better than these big budget movies with dangerously high budgets
It's so refreshing to watch a movie that doesn't have a checklist of inclusivity to fulfill. It's just a great story with well written characters. I miss that.
Exactly! Timeless
G Minus One is movie of the year.
Agreed.
Oojhf
Godzilla’s battled King Kong before
I have a movie poster that my cousin gave it to me.
Minus one is they had alrwady been wiped out by war, and Godzilla is bringing em further down
Koichi, not Kioshi.
Takashi, not Takaki.😂
Haha I tried.
