This is the best instruction I've found for rehab for my big toe which I broke two months ago. Thank you !
Thank you so much
Thankyou , those excercises are doing my arthritic painfule toe really good .
Thanks mate. I've recently been diagnosed with this and it's getting me a bit bummed down... Especially considering I love hiking mountains... I've tried these techniques and the toe felt better already. Just need to do them everyday. Cheers!
Ahhh feels better after 10mins, thanks!
Hi. I had two surgeries on my rigth big toe 17 years ago, I Was only 24 years old, and since then I have never walked without pain anymore. I have seen so many doctors and therapyts and NO one has told me I could try these excercies. Obviusly mi artritis is getting worse every time, but I keep trying to have a better life quality. So thank you very much!!!!
How’s it going for you?
His comment is not complete, he is appreciating the massage but didn't mention whether he did that massage or not n finally if he tried that then what happened after that
About the shoes. My doctor told me to buy shoes in my size but wide. Also I can’t have the lace part over the arthritic joint or it kills me to walk after about 1 minute. I found some Nikes for about $70 that had a soft top and nothing is over the joint rubbing it. I honestly have been able to walk farther and more comfortable than I have in years. Granted, I still have some pain but nothing like before. I’ll definitely try your exercises and I do use ice for about 20 minutes on the joint if need be. Ty for your tips! 😃👍
So I have big toe arthritis (Hallux Rigidus) pretty bad. I will try these exercises.
Skechers are the best for big toe bunion/arthritis and flat arches
Just wanted to say after seeing specialists and having their re-hab exercises, your set seem to be simpler and work as well or better. Many Thanks

What can be done for Morton’s Neuroma on the ball of both feet?
What type of shoes did you recommend for big toe pain?
Heh Toerrific.
Thank you for the pro tips and the pun.
Ryley, I had some problems with my feet that is healing and I just realized that I cannot bend the joint of my big toes closets to the tip of the toes. It bends easily if I grab it and bed it but when I try to bend it my toe only bends at the big joint. I can point my toe down or up but cannot bend the tip of the toe? Any suggestions? Thanks
My second toe is longer than my big toe.
Morton's Toe.
I have been told that this can cause foot pain.
Dude, it hurts when I do that. My right toe is so inflamed right now. The only relief I get is from massaging the base of the joint where you drew the black line. The second part of the video is what gives me relief. I could really, really use a foot massage right now. 😞
How is your toe now Stacey, if you don't mind me asking
It doesn’t make sense. The joint is permanently damaged with loss of cartilage. There’s no exercising it and stretching it to improve it? You’re in damage control and managing the arthritis until the joint fuses. Exercising this could make it worse, hence your pain?
Any suggestions on shoes ?
Hoka and On
ON is the best. Brooks also
I wear Hoka and stiff hiking running shoes
Hoka Bondi 8’s
I tried on Hoka and they felt odd. What’s really helped is the carbon fiber Morton extension shoe plates. When I’m not using the shoe plates, I have to be very careful.
Seems opposite to what you would want. Don't you want a less firm shoe to allow more bend to prevent it from getting worse? Don't use it you lose it?
With rigid or limited toe joint the flexion is lacking. Think of a pulley system where there's a knot in the rope. Flexible soles don't help that. A stiff or rocker sole can pole vault you into the next step, thereby getting you there with less pain. HOKA Bondi shoes help, especially with a carbon insole insert, Morton's, for example. I think I have the contoured one, and it helps. I bought the totally flat one later on just to compare, but I was less happy with that and I don't use it. Good luck.
But I get you on the use it or lose it, for sure. After my dance injury 22 years ago my teacher said to dancersize it as much as possible. I tried, but really I should have seen a doctor right away. I waited, by which time the verdict was arthritis. The only answer was shoeware. I wore huge spongy orthotics in huge ugly sneakers for a good while until I decided the doc was running a factory and ditched them. I made do, in pain, walking kind of on the outer edge of my foot, until finally seeing a podiatrist who pointed me toward Hoka. Not as immobilizing as orthotics world, and I wear somewhat normal shoes as I can, though delicate, ladylike things are beyond me. And I find every day my feet feel a little different. Sorry for the long-windedness, but it's an interesting topic.
It's not a question of using it or losing it. Sometimes it's caused by other factors such as flat feet and progresses so slowly over time (years!) that you don't pay attention to it until it's progressed to an advanced stage. The arthritis has caused a large overgrowth of bone and the cushioning cartilage between the bones is almost gone. In my case, I didn't notice anything until it became uncomfortable (and then impossible) to wear shoes with heels. In that case the toe can't be bent up anymore (movement and range of motion is very limited) or it's very painful to do so. By that point, it's better for the whole footbed to be supported with either a stiff insole or a removeable arch support, where the insole or rocker sole is doing the work of pushing off your foot instead of the arthritic joint, which will alleviate the stress and pain on the joint. In other words, the problem can't be reversed, only alleviated.
My podiatrist has advised against any exercises - he’s quite well known in Sydney and looks after many athletes who have arthritis in the big toe.
