The Beach Boys were the first band I fell in love with. I was only 5-years-old and would listen to my uncle's music collection. They were my favourite band until I was about 8 when I discovered how much I loved the Beattles. I remember my mom's friend comparing me to a teenager as I would put on records and use a headset to blast the music full-blast and rock out!
That describes me also… Sounds like we are about the same age. I’m a hard-core Beatles fan but I never let go of the beach boys. One of the beach boys songs that meant a lot to me is “Girl don’t Tell Me.” it was the B-side to Barbara Ann. I had a little puppy love - first kiss thing with a girl for a couple summers when she used to come out and stay with her grandparents. Suddenly she stopped writing back to me… Next time I saw her, she was more grown-up than me (because girls develop faster than boys). And she realized how attractive she was. Anyway… Still think back to that whenever I hear that song.
Love the Crowded House pick. Fantastic song! I was a radio DJ back in the 80’s and I remember seeing the band Fairground Attraction perform their song, “Perfect” on an awards show. Apparently it was a smash in other parts of the world. I fell in love with it, found the 45, and played it on the air. It quickly became the most requested song we’d ever played. I could never figure out why it didn’t take off in the USA. It didn’t make it past 80 on the Billboard Top 100. Still boggles my mind.
I absolutely love Don't Dream It's Over. It's got some beautiful lines, my favorite being "try to catch a deluge in a paper cup." This song also featured a bit in the original 2 part movie of Stephen King's The Stand. It was a poignant scene in the first movie (Part 1 of the novel).
I was a year out of High school when this album came out. Elderly woman behind the counter was the song that I listened to over and over again. Truly a spectacular song. Was totally captivating. Really hit me, growing up in what was a small town at the time. To this day it is one of my all time favorites

"Beatles For Sale" is, to me, the last "early" Beatles album. The way the production sounds still has that early -Beatles cold and raw sound that I always liked. It is truly a transitional work, which seems ironic in that there are more cover versions on this album than any other Beatles' album-a reflection of their grueling touring and TV appearance schedule in those insane Beatlemania days. This is a great album to listen to on a cold winter's day for me (it's snowing in Chicagoland right now as I write this!). This is also the last album that was made before George began to shed his "Quiet Beatle" status and became a songwriting force to be reckoned with.

Hard agree. I wish there was as much love for Temple of Low Men though. It's my favourite album of theirs. I want Love This Life to be played at my funeral. Such a beautiful lyric and vocal performance. Neil Finn is the songwriter of my lifetime.
I don’t want to spoil the party - yes! Always loved it, and No Reply, and the other two you mentioned. Early Beatles were the best. I never even considered “Party” might have been a personal song - just figured it was songwriting, like writing a novel. But the harmonies and guitar solo - magic! ❤️
Absolutely love "Elderly Woman" by Pearl Jam! That song should've been a big hit for them. I loved it when it was released, some of my friends, not so much. Not every song can be "Jeremy" or "Black".
One of the only things I know about Texas is that Austin is an unusually progressive/creator friendly culture in Texas. I know this because one of my favorite punk bands of all time (The Big Boys) are from Austin. Not to mention the Dicks, Butthole Surfers and Scratch Acid who would eventually become the Jesus Lizard.
I love "The Little Girl I Once Knew". The Beach Boys have so many superlative songs that could've been hits: "Til I Die", "Keep an Eye on Summer", "Don't Talk", etc. If you want to hear an awesome Carol Kaye bass line, check out "Hypnolove" by Wondermints from their excellent 1998 album, Bali. There's a reason Brian Wilson picked those guys to go out on the road with. Their brand of power pop is part-Beach Boys, part-Raspberries, part-Elvis Costello and part-Beatles, among many other influences. Check it out and have an excellent day! - Dave

So many great songs by Crowded House. Of course, Fall at Your Feet is amazing. Another not so well known masterpiece is Nails in My Feet. Another Feet song, LOL And a version of Fall at Your Feet that I think is even a little more haunting and goes head to head with CH is Jesse Cook's amazing flamenco guitar version of Fall at Your Feet.
I was a huge Split Enz fan back in the day, so Crowded House and Finn Bros was a must. Woodface is by far my favorite from CH, so glad Tim was in it. It was too good for public consumption. And Brian is a 20th Century genius, Beach Boys in some ways hit me harder than the Beatles, but I’m a 67 year old California native, my parents were literal beach bums and befriended the legends of surfing here.
Since you cover "the greatest music of all time", you should consider an episode dedicated to THE GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIIME, which is, of course: "Rock & Roll" by Velvet Underground.
"Fall at Your Feet" is a beautiful chorus with a sinister song wrapped around it. Hear me out. This is almost as much of a stalker song as "Every Breath You Take" except in "Fall at Your Feet," the narrator suffers from obsessive, unrequited love. It's the song of the permanently "friendzoned" guy trapped outside and scheming for a way in. What makes the song even *more* sinister are the opening lines, which suggest the narrator is self-pleasuring while thinking of his obsession. To me, the "who knows where that might lead?" line at the end of the bridge suggests as much cunning as desperation. All of this, I think, makes this song even more interesting. It's beautiful AND sinister.
I probably have heard all of these at least once before 2024 (even Pearl Jam whose music I have had a difficult experience connecting with). As a Beatlemaniac, I feel closest to "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party". That's between having heard *Beatles for Sale,* having covered the song live and having been friends since 1999 with a fellow musician who I met through the Chicago fandom named Donna Frost who referenced "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" in a song named after Paul McCartney on her solo record called *Girls like Us.* Speaking of Chicago, here are four of my choices. Chicago: "Where Do We Go from Here" Deep Purple: "Child in Time" Prince: "Take Me with U" Billy Joel: "This Night"
Struck by how much Fall At Your Feet reminds me of Keith Urban’s Break On Me. Different genre? Sure, but the line between rock and country is often blurred.
Did y'all mean to say 60's music? Love the Beach Boys & wish I could have seen them in concert. But there are many bands from the 60's & 70's that oh, could one go back in time just to see them rock & roll! 🤠
Professor I did the same thing blowing out car speakers 3 times in 6 months. {A record} 🙂Most of the time they replaced them no charge.....😂 But sometimes "What are you an idiot". 😆
By the end of '65 the Beach Boys surf sound was passe. Former dad manager Murry Wilson tried to resurrect it with his new band The Sunrays. They put out two pretty good singles "I Live For the Sun and Andrea", but both failed to hit the top 40.
Four Songs People Outta Be Listening to: 1. Angel From Montgomery - John Prine 2. Isn’t Life Strange - Moody Blues 3. The Wanderer - U2 & Johnny Cash 4. 24 Hours At A Time - Marshall Tucker Band
The songs on The Beatles' "Beatles for Sale" album are rooted in their disillusionment of fame. Beatle Mania had worn them down, and the lyrics and music reflected that.
Opinions are like, well just say we all have them and most of them stink. But while the Beatles and Beach Boys transformed music and influenced a generation I don’t really think their lyrics were so amazing. John Lennon wrote Imagine so he could truly write but seldom inspired me. Joni Mitchell, Dylan and Paul Simon were miles above most everyone else. Carly Simon wrote several amazing songs as did her one time husband James Taylor. Women are almost always overlooked but listen to All Too Well from Taylor Swift’s album Red. And he gets raves from those who know music but most don’t know Jason Isbell. Listen to Cast Iron Skillet and Miles from his Weathervanes album, Traveling Alone, Only Children and King of Oklahoma describe living and dying with addiction. White Beretta is an amazing song about how a choice regarding abortion changed everything. Or Dress Blues, a devastating song about the writers friend who died in Iraq. These songs matter so much in this moment.
The Crowded House story seems to be as powerful of a validation for the contribution of a creative producer as Bob Ezrins work on "Another Brick In The Wall". Bizzare that an artist can have what seem like disparate and random riffs or crude lyrical motifs and not realize that they are the components of a classic until the producer sees the grand design potential.
I've always kinda felt that the cute little intro to the Partridge Family theme song was basically a Brian Wilson style intro but without the brilliant genius informing the cuteness.
@ProfessorofRock Don't get me wrong, "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" is an excellent choice! Other worthies include "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Baby, You're a Rich Man", "Because", "Glass Onion", "Golden Slumbers," "I'm a Loser", "I've Just Seen a Face", "The Inner Light", "It's Only Love", "Mother Nature's Son", "No Reply", "She Said She Said", "Things We Said Today", and many more!

I learned about caesura's (a timely pause) in Eddie and the Cruisers. It changes the entire complexion of poetry and music; very cool.
For sure!
I often forget how much I dig The Beatles For Sale album, great tracks from top to bottom 🤘
It was the one that opened everything up! Don't you think?
@ damn right! it’s a perfect “transition album” as it still feels like a Beatles album yet still going in the new direction
Did the Beatles take Brian Wilson's 'dead air' as some inspiration and use it 2 times on Helter Skelter ?
I think they did!
Icarus (Born on Wings of Steel) by Kansas. Off the Masque album. My favorite Kansas song. I think it fits this category.
I have to admit, I don't know these artists or their songs. Don't know where I was at the time to miss it!
No problem!
Before Heart, before the Go Go's and the Bangles, before the Runaways, there was Fanny
I wish you'd talk about this band
Since you cover "the greatest music of all time", you should consider an episode dedicated to THE GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIIME, which is, of course: "Rock & Roll" by Velvet Underground.
Big Pearl Jam fan here. I am a hard rock guy though, and my favourite song is Porch. I really liked the unplugged version too.
Awesome!
Good take
Beatles For Sale is definitely an underappreciated album. It suffers from not having "I Feel Fine" on it, like Beatles '65 in the US.
True.
Chicago: "Where Do We Go from Here"
Deep Purple: "Child in Time"
Prince: "Take Me with U"
Billy Joel: "This Night"
Thanks Eric!
Great episode. Message To My Girl by Split Enz falls clearly into the discussion.
I never tried Legend of Zelda, but I had a sister who was addicted to it. Asteroids at the arcade was the one I was addicted to
My favorite game was centipede for Atari! ✌🏼😊 lol😂
Blast from the past!
SO good! Addicting! Did you ever beat it?
Yes I did finally beat it! 👍🏻😊
@@yvettevitacaponigro NICE! :)
Dude I love your channel and I agree with your taste 99% of the time but this track is sappy af. 😂 ❤
Which one?
Struck by how much Fall At Your Feet reminds me of Keith Urban’s Break On Me. Different genre? Sure, but the line between rock and country is often blurred.
Baby's in Black by the Beatles is one of my Favorites
Did y'all mean to say 60's music? Love the Beach Boys & wish I could have seen them in concert. But there are many bands from the 60's & 70's that oh, could one go back in time just to see them rock & roll! 🤠
Thanks.
Don't Dream Its Over is a fantastic song of theirs.
Thanks Janes
Professor I did the same thing blowing out car speakers 3 times in 6 months. {A record} 🙂Most of the time they replaced them no charge.....😂 But sometimes "What are you an idiot". 😆
Ha ha. No joke!
By the end of '65 the Beach Boys surf sound was passe. Former dad manager Murry Wilson tried to resurrect it with his new band The Sunrays.
They put out two pretty good singles "I Live For the Sun and Andrea", but both failed to hit the top 40.
So true.
Woodface is my favorite Crowded House album 🥰
Thank you Professor! You Rock!!! 👍🏻😊
You rock!
@ ✌🏼😊
16:30 Release me off of Ten is a masterpiece
So good!
My favorite of Pearl Jam's songs!! It is a great song to belt out. Releases
@ yeah. For those of us it hits particularly close to home with, it’s a tear jerker
@ I heard this in your voice 😁
I love Beatles For Sale. I think this is their real transition album.
Four Songs People Outta Be Listening to:
1. Angel From Montgomery - John Prine
2. Isn’t Life Strange - Moody Blues
3. The Wanderer - U2 & Johnny Cash
4. 24 Hours At A Time - Marshall Tucker Band
Great picks!
You should also listen to "Into Temptation" and "Better Be Home Soon" by Crowded House.
I think this is the first time in the history of Nintendo that I've heard NES pronounced "ness" rather than spelled out "N-E-S".
The songs on The Beatles' "Beatles for Sale" album are rooted in their disillusionment of fame. Beatle Mania had worn them down, and the lyrics and music reflected that.
I agree. Love it.
I always was more partial to “Him” by Rupert Holmes then “Escape” the pina colada song. 😊
Cool. Pack of Cigarettes!
What do you say to the master Brian Wilson when he disagrees with you? Lol
I love this song and this album
Which one?
Great observation!
I've always kinda felt that the cute little intro to the Partridge Family theme song was basically a Brian Wilson style intro but without the brilliant genius informing the cuteness.
Down in Hollywood - Ry Cooder and Dixie Chicken - Little Feat
Thanks!
Just so you Septics know the Kiwis don't pronounce any distinguishable vowel sounds whereas we Aussies tend to drawl out vowels out
Thanks.
Tanks
Elderly Woman is a great song.
There's about 100 Beatles songs that fall into the Just As Good category.
Name a few!
@ProfessorofRock Don't get me wrong, "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" is an excellent choice! Other worthies include "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Baby, You're a Rich Man", "Because", "Glass Onion", "Golden Slumbers," "I'm a Loser", "I've Just Seen a Face", "The Inner Light", "It's Only Love", "Mother Nature's Son", "No Reply", "She Said She Said", "Things We Said Today", and many more!
i saw the real beach boys not todays version of them , on the mall. July 4 1981 with the oak ridge boys !
