When leigh made these programmes trisha Goddard had a daily talk show here in the uk, at the time she lived in Norwich. Leigh wasn't having a pop because she is black it was because she was a prominent public figure. In the 80s there was a programme called "spitting image" which used puppets to really take the piss, mostly political figures, it was brutal in particular Margaret thatcher and ronald Reagan but other personalities were in the barrel aswell like steve davis and frank Bruno. There was never any suggestion of a racist agenda, anyone and everyone who was famous was fair game, in fact far from being offended many celebrities considered it a huge honour to be charactertured by the spitting image team, a bit like getting a wax work in tussuards. Speaking to people I know, both black and white, it seems to me that it's mostly white people who are pretending to be offended by some of these programmes, a bit like when you hear a public figure say "some of my best friends are black"? Back in the 70s there was a sit com called " love thy neighbour" about a working class white family who had a black family moved in next door. It was eventually taken off air because a few people ( white I would guess) decided it was racist, it absolutely wasn't, every episode the white guy, played by Jack smethurst, was made to look a complete pratt whilst the black guy (rudolf walker) and his gorgeous wife ( nina baden-semper) always came out on top. It was the same with alf garnet, a stereotypical naive bigot, he always ended up with egg on his face. I'm alright with most of the depictions of black people in today's comedy. I do cringe now and then. I cringed at this Trisha one tbh. Let's face it, it's not taking the piss out of Trisha herself, it's lazily taking the piss out of Jamaican people's accents, behaviours, mannerisms. The use of Trisha's image feels a little coincidental here. Nothing wrong with making comedy out of our differences, but we all have some level of awareness of the negative effects of portraying black people in this way. What is most offensive the the refusal to admit that these same jokes are then used to humiliate ethnic minorities by lots and lots of cruel stupid people who pick up on the references to skin colour, accent, behaviours etc. We simply don't live in a world where all people see each other as equal and comedy like this feeds that opinion.
