This song (and the m/v) has *KOREA* written all over it. Not only in terms of the traditional instruments, but also the drum beat pattern, and the choreo. It's their way of rebutting the criticism they received about being ,,too westernized" and not ,,Korean enough".

They had been looked down on in Korea for being from a small company, but as soon as they started gaining popularity and recognition outside of Korea they were accused of becoming “Westernized”. So they deliberately packed this song & its MV/performances full of Korean cultural references including traditional instruments, rhythms, dances, garb, and expressions as part of the lyrics. The MV is also deliberately colorful and over-the-top. There is an IDOL Explained by a Korean video by DKDKTV that should answer most of your questions about this performance. Borahae!

I am glad you have a comment section to your reactions to refine the generic out of context description you read. The person who wrote the description you prefaced your reaction with seemingly is unaware of what the corporately designed Idol platform is, the ridicule the rap underground dished on RM and Suga for becoming Idols, fan expectations for Idol comportment and how these lead to anti behaviors, canceling, and promote excessive restrictions on individual behavior, or even that the song was composed in a Korean context. I know, I just wrote a run on sentence. But the point I am making is accurate descriptions need not be "erudite" analyses. The track Idol is much more grounded. A generalized interpretation may be a disservice to your deeper understanding of the track's intention. Idol basically is a big middle finger and address to out of place criticisms.

Egyptian never crossed my mind before, but now that you mention it, it is a little. But it is actually Korean traditional music. During the time they were going a lot of crap for being to western because they were really raising in the US. So they this song also celebrates their Korean culture along with loving oneself despite the criticism they were receiving. Also, the dragons are loins. I didn't know about this either til this song.

Dkdktv has an explanation video, they explain the Korean references and instruments being used...they are also wearing Hanbok(traditional Korean clothing). Its also more of an African-Korean fusion, some designs, beats and a dance called Gwara Gwara, Bts and Bighit explore all kinds of arts from other countries and Armys translate its meaning as well, so other Armys know where the dance or beat originated.

OZ here! These are Asian instruments and Asian culture. Not Egyptian but various instruments of Southeast Asia. My husband is Chinese and there is a lot of what is called “Lunar New Year” traditional symbolism happening around the stage. The dragon, the cats, Jimin’s fan performance is something he won a cultural award for and JHope with the drums. They are Korean and you must always remember that. As with my husband their culture is very dear to them. They will incorporate things from different types of music so that’s and it’s Korean pop music and dancing. I watch a few Korean television shows that my mother in law can watch because the have Chinese subtitles…so fun! She is very picky about her ethnicity and very quick to judge others who do not know her specific culture. She does not read or write English, even though they live in London…we only eat traditional Chinese food while we are there. BTW…You can get it wrong with the British as well. I really think you should check out MaMaMoo since you are riding the BTS crazy train. A more mature KPop girl group who have paid their dues and are highly underrated until this month. Maybe check out some other traditions on your own…for now Borahea!

As many have mentioned this is an answer to what the negative people said that they were too “westernised” but you are correct that they have influence from Africa in some of the dance moves but also from Korea and many other countries that they have inspiration from, the animal that walks around on the stage is lions the korean version.
They did a collaboration with Nicki Minaj on this song so it’s at least two different versions of MVs.
Their live performance for this song is intense at the Golden Disc Awards (GDA)2018 they made the artist area move it started to shake, their is fan videos that shows the artists reaction when it happened.
Another time think it was at a concert the stage started to collapse and the personal under the stage was holding it up for some part of that performance, this was documented by the camera team that was filming for their behind the scenes documentary of the concert, the group was told right after that they had to change witch songs they were to do after that and they could not do any dancing because of the risk.
First time I saw a small clip from it I didn’t understand what was happening or why it happened. Can remember where I saw it first I think it can have been about the staff they have.

They intentionally used the African beat and infused with Latin and indian, using highly of South Korean instruments to give more meaning to the music. Note that BTS music are highly influenced by their hiphop beginnings. Everything BTS does is intentional but well thought of. This was their performance at MMA 2018, where they utilized Korean instruments, Clothing and Korean Feastivals which made them mark in the field of arts and culture of Sourh Korea which earned them the Cultural Merit Award given by their Government to prestigious artists only who have given honor to their Country. BTS boys are the only KPop stars to have received the said award. It was notably recognized by expert SKorean economists that from 2018-2022 BTS became a great contributor of SK's economy equivalent to 3.2% of SK's GDP. Everythiing BTS wears and eats would sell in minutes like hot potato which increased exportation of K-food, K-Fashion, K Beauty, K-Cars, Samsing, amd othet K products. Note thought that BTS' popularity grew first abroad before it was able to penetrate at home. It was this year, 2018, that they became a household name in South Korea, especially among the elders. As their company grew huge and became giant, bigger than combination of the 3 giant labels, their tv appearances became in demand as the ratings of shows they were appearing at skyrocketted..

There’s a lot of Korean themes in this song. It’s because BTS was getting hate for being westernized so they went all out with the Korean theme. Also, they received hate for being idols when some of them came from an underground rap scene, so I think the concept of the song is “you say I’m an idol? Well yes I am and I’m proud of it”. Also, the mv kinda mocks other idol mvs. It’s just all loud colours and trippy visuals
