In this video, I show you how I go ahead and repaint the rusty steel wheels on a Ford F250. By following this procedure, you will have the knowledge, a full step by step tutorial, and the links you will need to tackle this project yourself.
I have everything you will need linked below, in the order of appearance. If you’re looking for something that I missed, just let me know in the description, or send me your question at milanmastracci@gmail.com.
This tutorial is mainly focusing on steel wheels are the rusting, however if you are working with alloy wheels, it will be a bit easier as there will not be any rust and the aluminum is a softer substrate than steel, meaning the prep should be easier. I will include a video in the future regarding painting alloy wheels.
If you have any questions regarding the video, you know what to do. Thanks for watching!! :)

Doing the first wheel is fun. Doing all 4's get old pretty fast :p
It’s called doing the job , Rufus!
@@kevinellsworth9318 Ok?
Yeah lol try doing a dually
Nice to see a young kid doing work like this.
ChrisFix also did a video on how to repaint rims and he did a splendid job.
i liked his more
Bubble Butt That's what I thought this was at first. I thought he did a new video.
Nope you're not
Bubble Butt Chris Fix has better videos
this is the basic concept of DIY to make it things look nice.....its simply an awesome job..but I dont understand with all the people who dont appreciate the effort of showing the skills and the technicality of this gentleman....this guy one day will be a professional mentor...keep doing it buddy...
I don't even own car yet and I still watch these vids , he always does top notch work.
Mandingo Trotman How would you know this "top notch work" if you know nothing about this work
Log Elm I think he is very thorough. and I think that says a lot.
Mandingo Trotman Allot of the information is incorrect.. before you do any work like this I would reccomend watching multiple videos.
Log Elm you sound like you know about this kind of thing . I will take your advice.
I can't believe there are so many paint masters and experts in one comment section. It's incredible. I'm sure they all have there own channel where they educate the rest of us on the proper techniques of painting car wheels. I like the video. Looks like a good DIY project for a work truck most anyone can do. Well, except for a few haters in the comments, lol.
Makes me laugh because if they "know it all" then why are they watching these? Just to pick on people I guess.
Nice video. why didnt you remove the weight from the wheels? when you balance the wheels next time you will notice the old color.
Right.. They are all going to need balanced again anyway.. using the flap disc removes some metal as well as the rust and paint and now it has 9 coats of paint, 3 of each can, so the weight will be all over the place.
3 cans of each on 4 different wheels won't affect the balancing and also removing the rust and paint would change the balancing but would not be noticable as it would be such a tiny difference.
Chadi Audi Yes.... the propery way would be to pry off the weights with a flathead. At that point youre gonna have to pay around $80 to have all 4 balanced again. Its really at the discrection of you.
Where do you get charged 80$ to get balanced 4 wheels?? Here to get 4 tires changed on mags and balanced cost 50$ in total, and to only get 4 wheels balanced costs 15$ for all four.
smart move
Lots of criticism, but I bet none of them made a video trying to help out. Very nice job. Will be doing mine soon.
I just got my car license!! I got it on the same day I turned 18!
(I live in Sweden and you got to be 18 to get a license here)
Anyway, I just bought my first car about 2 weeks ago. And I have already styled it and it looks really good.
I have painted the rims black, and the brake calipers red. I have also put on a black racing stripe. And I have bought new "side mirror indicators".
The car already had tinted windows and eyelids on when I bought it.
I have a Volvo v50.
Just wanted you to know xD
Was looking for a video like this and had already seen about 5 that were so vague and uninformative. The best and most thorough wheel painting ever. Thank you. This could be a video for dummies, like the books. 😂
"Rust is like cancer" leaves whole other side of rim and back of bead rusty and untouched, along with wheel weights.
Milan you and Chrisfix have to make a collab because you two are awesome
they really should. Their videos help so many. I even used their tips for my car lol.
I agree they are both awesome, but Milan lives in Canada, and ChrisFix is in the US.
Lucky Dane Yeah it would be pretty tricky.
I think that'd be fun :)
Kai -291 exactly
Don't use an impact with a wire wheel use a regular drill
Literally perfect timing. Buying and refinishing wheels monday
'Rust is like cancer' good comparison.
Error 404 yup
Troy oh stfu.
Error 404
Cancer is what it's called when the rust has eaten through the metal.
This is a hack job!
Take off the weights from the rims before you paint it lol
@@lennym480 Not to mention he didn’t do the inner part of the wheel. That rust is just going to creep up and under the paint again
starts sanding doesn't remove balance weights
EmptySergeant well yeah.. then you would have to go and pay to have your wheels balanced again dipshit
Not if you do what knowledgeable people do, mark the weight locations. I think he may wanted to have the weights painted black also.
So what happens when you get new tires or need to balance the wheel? All that time spent sanding and painting is wasted. So in the long run, is it worth it, Dipshit?
Yea you always remove the balance weights because if you want your tires to last the full length you rotate and balance them every 7 to 8 thousand miles and chances are your gonna need to move the weights when you do so yes always remove the weights but other then that is a nice paint job
@@jordanatchinson1769 - Nope, you just mark the tire where they go and put them back on "dipshit". Who feels stupid now?
You are getting closer and closer to 100,000 subscribers.
Almost there :)
perfect video. best youtuber for people who actually want to learn +1.
awesome job, im always impressed with your videos. you do the job right the first time and explain it really well for anyone to do it themselves
One important thing on these old style, pressed steel wheels that rust - check the welds. I had a set of 80's wagon wheels on my diesel that rusted at the welds on the back and started vibrating. Traded with someone that wanted the tires and scrapped the wheels, win-win for us both.
Excellent prep work
should've used self etching primer on the bare steel. and sanding between the primer and base would've given a better finish
Super cool you taught me something again!! Lol love it!!!
Good video. My only critique is that an angle grinder is a bit too aggressive IMO. It can cause “waves” in the metal which, depending on the color you choose, might show in the finished product. When doing a project like this you HAVE to take your time. Shortcuts might save some time but the results are usually better when more patience is exhibited.
And 🖕🏻all the haters. Keep doing your thing, young man!
He then went over it with many stages of less aggressive grit. You need something aggressive to get all the rust and grime off.
Great job young man! I am amazed at the amount of negativity guys have for someone who takes their time to produce a high quality video. Anonymity breeds courage I guess ...
Very informative. You do a very good job explaining the process.
For all those concerned about the wheel weights: he likely doesn't care about the wheel, it's probably a scratch(that's what we call it in my shop), you do shit to it because you can or you need the practice. He did a fine job, sanding was ok, but everything else considered he's pretty masterful for so young.
good video but you should paint those center caps black also!!!!

Fantastic video Milan!
Thanks buddy :)
Those cards make it look like you got white walls on your tire! That would be a cool look on your truck! (I miss white walls)
Personally, I think three coats of primer is a waste of paint and time, since primer is primarily used to help bond to the surface and after two coats (second to help cover perfectly) is no longer necessary as the surface is fully covered and you are just priming primer.
Go get that money kid your great at everything you do!
congrats ON 80K YEAAA BOIII
Im binge watching your videos!!! Nice tips with the paper markers, I would of probable take the whole wheel lol!!!
I wouldn't grind on rims because when you do that it usually causes the wheel to become greatly out of balance.
that doesn't make sense to me, imagine all the mud and rust behind the wheel that throws the wheel off balance just as it is. If you then remove the rust, clean the inside of the wheel, and rebalance the tire, I dont see any issues with sanding.
Well done, great narration!
You should make another video - How to turn painted wheels into polished/chrome . I see that after you grind of the paint of the wheel , you could use extra fine sandpaper to a near chrome state & apply metal polish to top it off.
well done my mate!
Thanks Richard! 👊
I got hold of a wire wheel for the drill that is plastic-coated. Was great around rubber as didn't tear up like a straight wire wheel.
Bro, you're a legend ! Keep it up !
Is it a good idea to have the tires removed and paint the inside of the rims?
Safety tip: make sure deflate the tire before doing this. Imagine if you hit the tire and it burst on your face. You don’t want that.
Also I hope you balanced the tire after using angle grinder.
Lol watched all the way to the end... 3 uggua dugua hahahaha
Gloss , NOooooo. Satin , YeeeeeeS !
I'd like to see a follow up on this one (how long does it all last?), considering that it's just a cosmetic touch up..
(only the external face is addressed, nothing done to the inner face or the rim lip)
Nice video. I would suggest that you spray from a little further distance so you don't get to much uneven spread.

Love the video
Very nice bud!
Killed it bro... doin same thing to my dually rims
I work in a manufacturing warehouse where we paint amd laminate.. And we also have a woodworking shop and a metal shop.. When you spray.. You are supposed to start and finish each stroke off of the rim.. And never in heavy strokes that close.. To apply light coats.. You spray around a foot away and when you want to apply heavier coats.. Always a foot away and just do each stroke a bit slower to avoid runs and orange peel.
You listed a link for the scissors.. LOL!
Good scissors best brand I’ve ever owned will literally cut meat of a bone
Good job , good video
Great stuff, thank you.
You did such a good job I had to subscribe
Good video, if I was going all the trouble I'd do the entire wheel though with the tire removed
Nice detailed video.
Looks nice now you have to do it on the other three wheels
Awesome video, as always ! good job Milan !
Good job
Thanks Micky! :)
Nice job.
i gotta admit it came out nice. looks like if it was done professionally.
👍🏻 great video!
Thanks Shane!!
great video.
Nice video!
Great video thank you kindly for the post, very informative.
You said 50% coverage... that was more like 95%
Cole Swearingen Agree
Rustoleum paint covers better than many other paints
can you do a video on adding a fuse block to a vehicle, Sea Blue fuse block is what I have in mind to use in my truck.
Love your videos bro. Do you think you can make a video on what to inspect and how to do it when buying a used car?
Over explained but well done. Very useful
Good through job
wow it was fun to watch thanx 👍🤣
Those hub caps should be painted black then they would look bad ass! Nicely done
awesome video, very very detailed. thanks!
Those tires are whats up...👍
I'd paint the center caps black too, it gives the wheels a cop car look which doesn't look so hot
Hey man, I love your videos. I just bought a 84 Fiero it's bad I know but just thinking about the mods I can do I love looking forward to the next mod. Your videos really give some good knowledge.
?
@@tattedvet8355 yeah that was 5 years ago so I don’t know ether😂
To many haters in these comments, thanks for another cool video
Cheers buddy :)
Are those balance weights? Should've probably removed them. When tire is gonna be rebalanced later on they might put them in a different location and you'll have unpainted spots on your wheel.
After the last primer coating what was the wait time before putting on the basecoat color black? Then, what is wait time before clear coat applied? The video didn't mention this. Good video. Ignore the negative people. They are simply wheels.
What about the wheel weights? Feel awkward just painting over them, What happens when they get moved?
What about the wheel weights. If you have the tire rebalanced chases are the weights will be in a different location and you wind up with a place with no paint. What do you do about that spot ?
brillo pad works real good with rust
keep it up man!
Great detail! Thanks
Hey man thanks for the guide i need this but i only have sandpaper to use with my hand and the wire brush too so i can paint my wheels with this and yes i have the primer the base color and crystal help me out here thanks and keep going with the guides
Can you show a picture of what that paint job looks like after you get a mount and balance and your missing some paint under weights
I just bought a new truck that has steel painted rims. Since the rims are new do I still have to sand the paint off or can I just paint over them? this is a work truck with the gray steel rims.
If I use a matte black and then add a clear coat will it become glossy. Great video, no offence I hate glossy.
If I'm not mistaken, they make a matte finish clear coat as well.
Appreciate it you helped me a lot
Thinking about doing this to my wheels did it last well?
I would have painted center cap too but whatever makes you happy your truck.
Im trying to remove paint and a little bit of rust on my trailer to paint it . will the flap disk work better and faster then the wire brosh ?
Gotta paint those center caps!
Liked video, thanks. Didn't know the warm water trick. If painting with tired off, do I paint the inner part, or just clean and treat with Marvle's, or something?
I know this is has nothing to do with the video but. Do. You have a video on how to check the battery vs alternator because my battery keeps dying. Thanks! Red Accord 05 v6
Bajwa94G get it checked at orielys for free
Wish i could do that in just few hours last time when i tried to paint wheels my paint just sucked after that i and i still want to redo the painting. But the worst thing is it took me fucking 2 days :D
Could I use isopropyl alcohol as a substitute at 7:50?
Yup
I need to do this on my truck's rims. They're looking all scratched up and gnarly. I wouldn't paint them black. Not a fan of everything all blacked out. IMO you need to paint that center cap too.
Great vid!
Did you need to sand between coats?
Nice!
