All credit to Hornby for being the only mainstream manufacturer producing budget models. Other than the light weight it looks like you've got a lot for your money - metal nameplates too, I've had several main range Hornby locos that don't include that. Nice looking model, good runner, robust and nothing falls off it. Pitched at a price that newcomers to the hobby can afford and with modern locos like the 67 and 66 being regulars on the network making them attractive to newer younger modellers. What a nice little loco - you got a bargain there for sure.

It is better than I expected and is a great runner too. The only thing for me is that the front end looks a bit "flat" but other than that, I'm well pleased.

"Sam's Trains" reviewed a "Railroad Plus" 47, but nowhere on the box did it mention the "Plus" business. GBP99 on the Hornby site (I think), but he got it for about GBP 66 or 69.

I saw that and wondered if it really was a Plus model - mine does say so on the label if not on the actual box. Who knows - Hornby move in mysterious ways!

There are all sorts of these Railroad diesels on offer at the retailers. I just picked up a Class 66 for £50 from Kernow.

The Lima 67 was the model that finally came with the standard 4 axle drive /can motor & lights spec that was applied to the rest of Limas HO range. Had many heated convos with Peter Binger who was MD of Riko International who specified the UK range of models. By 1995 the writing was on the wall, the Bachmann class 158 being the model that came with 4 axle drive / can motor & lights, in 1998 Peter Binger was adamant that UK modellers would not pay £75 for a can motored 4 axle drive loco with lights , let alone the £15.95 for a bogie aggregate wagon or £17.50 for a intermodal flat. The class 66 that came out in 1998 was one of Limas worst , what should have heralded the step change needed was just a cheap jack job of utilising the class 59 tooling & doing the bare minimum. When the 67 came out in 2002 it was to little to late, Bachamnns £49.95 class 37/4's just a cut above , the 67 came with a great drive system but in terms of the underframe etc it was a case of 1 step forwards 2 steps backwards. Staring with the 156 in 1989 , nem coupling pockets did start to feature , Lima on the 60 / 59 / 92 & 67 making the tension lock unclip , the nem fitting on the 156 clips to the bogie frame & the same clip fitting is on the bogie frames of the 60 / 59 /92 & 67 , peters spares selling the 156 fittings as spare parts.
Only Hornby could remove the hard fought for 4 axle drive & replace it with their garden shed engineering 2 axle drive. Worst days work ever when the Marx Bros of Margate bought the Lima range up. Breaks your heart to see what they have done , funnily enough ive just bought a secondhand Lima 67 to put in the platinum jubilee purple livery , not surprised TMC are selling them off , no way would you pay £90 for them. The Railroad range is a dogs breakfast. The entire Lima range should be reissued & put in Lima packaging & more importantly new models making of say the class 70 / 68 & the IET 800's / voyager. Pointless having a budget range if all you can get a is few random items but then it is Hornby so you cant expect mush else.

I would certainly be happy if they re-released old Lima models with an upgraded motor and lights where applicable.

@@fairweathertrains3029Yes. Some of the later Lima diesels were perfectly fine. I have several 37s in various liveries, and whilst they’re nowhere near the standard of current Bachmann & Accurascale models, they look the part from a yard away (the “3 feet rule”) and have allowed me to build a fleet of 37s without having to take out a 2nd mortgage! Not sure I’d buy many of Lima’s old steam locos though….

I would like to add a goods locomotive to the roster, thinking about something that would have seen service in 1960 - 1970. Thinking Deltic. Any suggestions? Thus far I had a Lima and it ran superbly for about ten minutes before literally digesting its own gears. Being Stateside, repair not feasible. Any other ideas?

Here in the UK, Accurascale takes some beating, insane detailing & top runners at around half to 2/3 price of a new Bachmann. There is also a huge range of Lima diesels at the lower end. Generally, can't go wrong with a Lima! I'd scan through eBay unless you want new.

They are a bit light, hence the need for traction tyres. If you don't know, the weights are in the fuel tank which just unscrews.

I have 5 of the original Lima models all in EWS livery and they are good runners still today. This was a step up from their other locos with pancake motors. The 66 was also a good model now in Hornby range. Seem to recall however that my Lima ones have central can motor only 3 pole but drive all wheels. Had tops off to service and reconnect one of the drive shafts. Not had these out for a while as packed up in the loft so maybe incorrect. So if only one boggy drive that is a step backwards. Naughty Hornby. As you state lights are only white front but couplings are the ones Lima fitted so no upgrade from Hornby there. Weight difference is probably as you suggest. The level of detail at that time was brilliant. Agree about the grill. Looks great even though it is moulded and exhaust looks great. My opionion is this was Lima's first attempt at stepping up their game to compete with Bachmann who started releasing model around that time using can motor and all wheel drive. Shame Lima went by the way as I suspect they would have given Hornby a good run for their money so to speak. I always preferred the Lima models back then. Better detail easy to service and fix and cheaper to buy. Agree great loco for the price you paid. I would like to know what extra you get on the Hornby all singing and dancing version which I think is around £150 to 200. Been thinking of getting one but cannot justify the price. Really want one in Colas Rail livery. Also there is a GBRF one in real life that looks smart.

The one driven bogie is a shame but it does run especially well despite that. I have a few Lima diesels that I still run and all of them have the pancake motor which varies a lot in noise output, but do work well. I would love to know which Lima diesels have the can motor. I also have a good few Lima European locos, both steam and diesel/electric, none of which have the pancake motor, all have lights and are good runners. Maybe, at least in terms of mechanism, Lima built down to the UK standards of the time!

Suspect you are right about catering for the UK market. However, I think Lima missed a trick here and would have made everyone else step up maybe. The Class 67 is the only uk spec loco I know that had all wheel drive and central can motor. Since my original post I found the all singing and dancing Class 67 in EWS livery plus 3 coalfish wagon for £130 + postage. It was the last one. Is was limited edition set of 1000. It has all diecast chassis and underframe, all wheel drive, front and rear lighting and high level front lamp. It is so heavy did not expect that until I took it out of the box. I think it is one of the heaviest locos I own.
