How a Benelli M4 Super 90 works

- The Benelli M4 Super 90 is an Italian semi-automatic shotgun manufactured by Benelli Armi SpA.
On May 4, 1998, the United States Army's Armaments Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey issued Solicitation #DAAE30-98-R-0401, requesting submissions for a new 12 gauge, semi-automatic combat shotgun for the U.S. military. In response to the request, Benelli Armi SpA of Urbino, Italy designed and built the Benelli M4 Super 90 Combat Shotgun. On August 4, 1998, five samples of the M4 were delivered to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and after intense testing, the M4 had beaten the competition. In early 1999, ARDEC awarded the M1014 Joint Service Combat Shotgun contract to Heckler & Koch, American subsidiary for importation of the Benelli M4 Combat Shotgun. The first units (count of 20,000) were delivered to the United States Marine Corps in 1999. During testing, the prototype was named XM1014, but after adoption, the 'X' was dropped, and the weapon was officially designated the M1014.

The people who disliked this video can’t afford an M4
Lol 😆
Really? That’s weird. I disliked it for that weird intro text, I assumed I’d be looking at a real gun with at least a voiceover. The voiceover being a low db moment with the firing of the gun being the loud part. Not some generic sampled effect lol! Way too cautious disclaimer text… gotta be a parody video.
@@bossbaddiegames it's actually a game, world of guns: guns disassembly
Exactly! I love my M-4 1014
Or they have a 930 spx and realize they don’t need Italian trash 🇺🇸
It would be great if the action of the mechanisms was shown without simulating weapon kick
Playback speed -> 0.25 This maybe helps
the recoil makes it really easy to see what's happening
For the longest time I always wondered where those bullets were stored when you loaded them, seeing this video I now feel stupid for not realizing. Great video man
WTFisthis? 2017 it’s called shells not bullets
BUT IS IN FORTNITE YAY
@@RJ-gp8nj yes you are correct. And bullets is the wrong word to. It's either round or ammunition. A bullet is just the tip and after its fired out the barrel. Lol.
Tubular magazine
Wow gaming kids are hilarious with their wording ( instead shell/cartridge/round calling it bullets). Their disabled brains are not able to comprehend basic functions of firearms they are using while spending 12 hours per day in basement. You have damn guns on your eyes constantly and some people for example wont be able to tell on which side case is ejected on guns they are "maining" in csgo garbage.
Nothing like the gift of a lead sweater. Tank Dempsey.
Very informative. Thank you

What a complex but efficient design! 0.0
The design on the super 90's is actually simple and elegant!
Fun fact:the soft ware is called “world of guns)
Funny fact: The design of the inertia system is originally from Breda.
Hands on the most elegant, simple, reliable and durable firing mechanism I had the pleasure of working with.
Isn't it a short-stroke gas piston system with 2 small pistons ?
@@Deathunter761 I think not.
There's Bredas (Altair for example) that have the short-stroke gas system (they're basically A302 berettas).
Models like the Astro feature this type of inertia driven system.
Most people think that the inertia system was developed by Benelli.
I might be wrong either way.
@@jrg3213 Benelli M1, 2 and 3 seem to be inertia operated but M4 is gas-operated, likely by a short stroke piston.
The Benelli MR1 is a 5.56mm version of the M4, Forgotten Weapons has a video with its disassembly and it appears it's a "under barrel short-stroke piston" system.
@@Deathunter761 I'll have to check it out.
I'm talking from experience that might be wrong since I've never seen a Benelli with that type of system.
@@jrg3213 The M4 absolutely uses a gas operating system. Benelli calls it the ARGO (auto regulating gas operation)
For the main course, i want something big...and bold.

Thank you for the video. I know that it took a great deal of time to produce, and I DO appreciate that. BUT, the whole point of the video is to carefully follow the internal workings of the parts. Having the gun JERK BACK every time a round is fired makes it extremely difficult to follow the instantaneous internal functioning of the parts. We all know that the gun jerks back when fired....we don't need to see that. A BETTER animation would have been to have had the gun as immovable whilst the internal parts are functioning. I have had to move on to other videos for education because this recoil jerking is too visually disruptive. (Sorry).

This and the Beretta 130 tactical are the top two shotguns right now.
Nicely done here.
Great animation
I admire your work and watch your every videos . Can u please make functionality of machine guns and some more smg

Lovely ShotGun
Do u used it for hunting or just home defense ?
@@ismailsuliman361 Home Defense
My FAVOURITE SHOT GUN 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Does it good for hunting especially birds ?
I shot a benelli m4 for the first time at the range and my shoulder hurt for days.
I don't think this adequately conveys the gas pressure operating the action or the details of exactly what the rotating bolt is doing and how it acts upon the shell. Those are arguably the most critical elements in the operation of the shotgun, so I think the video leaves how the gun operates somewhat mysterious. An animation of the movement of gas pressure upon the piston and a slow-motion transparent close-up of bolt rotation would probably be enough to make clear exactly how the gun extracts and ejects the spent shell after firing. Outside of what happens between firing and ejection, everything appears clearly demonstrated. I think I can see how it all works.
I'd love to see competitive semi-automatic shotgun designs demonstrated like this, especially the Beretta. The Beretta 1301 is the competitor to the Benelli M4, and the Beretta A400 hunting shotguns use the same method of operation.
the audio clearly gotten in gift by a kinder surprise.

I’ve always wondered why that bottom bar was there.
It possibly the frames for the animation. When it reach the end, the gun animation stop and it continues with the next.

Waiting, how does the little flap know when to kick the next shell up?
I believe this is a version of von Kropatschek’s tube system where the bolt hits a small lever on the cartridge lifter and pivots it upwards.
Watch CRsenal’s video on the Lebel rifle OR the (newly-published) Forgotten Weapons video on the French Marine Kropatschek.

interesting firing mechanism, the weird semiautomatic trigger.
What is weird about it? It's a little like the m1 garand
E. P weird because it looks unreliable.striker would be better those nonsense hidden hammer.
@@lanchanoinguyen2914 I'd say that the benelli m4 is about as reliable as it gets for semi auto shotguns. Why is a hammer nonsense?
E. P why apply an thin shape and poor contact steel hammer with the trigger under high tension of the spring? Why using an hammer while a striker would be cheaper and more reliable than this design?
@@lanchanoinguyen2914 striker fired guns always have heavier, creepy trigger pulls. It may look thin but that is because you are no engineer. Sometimes a part becomes stronger when material is removed.
I can't see any mechanism for how the spent shell is ejected out of the side. Assuming it's not magic... can anyone enlighten me?
I like shotgun

is this recoil operated or gas operated ? video did not show the most important part
Gas

Spas12 is a garbage shotgun in real life. It is super cool though!

sniper FREE FIRE m1014 is the usmc version which holds 7+1 shells. The M4 benelli is the civilian version which is 5+1. And also the foldable stock I believe is only on the m1014 I might be wrong about that one

The hammer reminds me of an AR-15 hammer

I thought M4’s were gas?
Ehm. Recoil 😁

Rainbow six anyone?
No the Benelli contains 8 shells per mag
So we are to believe that the inertia of the recoil compresses the spring, that then unlocks the bolt after all pressure is released from the barrel.... Then what force moves the bolt and carrier rearward to eject the shell and pick up a new one. I'm going out on a limb and saying this video is bullshit, and this is a delayed blow-back system that used the pressure in the barrel to both unlock the bolt and to move the bolt carrier backward. That little spring is there to absorb the initial inertia and delay the rearward motion of the bolt to allow more acceleration on the projectile to occur.
Trigger group looks an awful lot like the SPAS 12 trigger group , oh yea they bought Franchi , copied the design , took credit for it and destroyed the tooling for the SPAS making it damn near impossible to get parts , "F" the M1014 and Beretta .
If you make accurate drawings and don't say what it is a competent machinist could make one for you. Don't ask don't tell.
