I do so enjoy these conversations and it's great to see Devin Townsend getting some appreciation, literally a living legend. Peace and love gents 💚🤘
Devin Townsend is a vocal range is outa this world
deep peace is amazing track please play this
Oh yesss!! Their album City from '97 is a majestic industrial metal powerhouse
If your gunna fall in love with SYL, City is probably the album that will do it.
Devin's so respected in metal and prog, but he's one of those creatives who never seems to rest and has put out all sorts of stuff with so many different vibes, probably anybody can find something to like from him. Judson might really enjoy this one-off project he did around 10 years back with Ché Aimee Dorval called Casualties of Cool.
Good to see you guys again!
Devin is someone I only discovered recently, and I liken him to a guitar philosopher;
He just has a simple, down-to-earth perspective and it reminds me that it's not all so serious, I play music because I love it.
Devin (and SYL in particular) were one of my gateway bands into more extreme metal. The first time I heard City in my dorm room in 2010 I was completely blown away. I really enjoyed the back-and-forth between both of you with getting into a new sound, I hope you guys do more stuff like this in the future.
That was one of the most fruitful post reaction conversations I’ve ever witnessed. The more you open your horizons, the more opportunity you have for fulfilling experiences. Falling in love with SYL is something magical and singular, and you two are sharing that with us. ❤
Yay more Devin! 🙌🏻 I’m seeing him again with Tesseact in May!!
Every project Devin has done is gold imo! I’m really looking forward to his musical, The Moth!
Love syl, great video as always 🙏 thank you
Excited to see how he likes this. Such a great song from a great band . Devin has an amazing voice
Alien is a masterpiece!Devin a genius!🤘
So great to see you guys doing SYL! You guys need to do "Almost Again." It's a masterpiece. Great reaction! Gene Hoglan is known as the Atomic Clock for a reason.
I once heard SYL referred to as “sticking your head into a 747 jet engine at full throttle.”
I think it’s an appropriate description. I love me an angry Devy.
Great song.
This song... Hit so hard
I was one of the people mentioning to do some SYL songs months ago and I had no idea Richard felt that way about Devin and hadn't listened to much of his music. You've got several heavy ass albums to catch up on when you have the time. They're all well worth your time.
During the recording process of making this album, Devin decided to stop taking the medications that were treating his bipolar disorder which cultivated some pretty raw and potent creativity and chaos. A few albums and years later he would fall off the face of the earth, and come back a changed man. Pretty interesting time for the man.
Great video and discussion guys! This album is a tour de force - like himself really. The song ‘Shine’ and ‘Shitstorm’ from this album are just 👌🏻
You’re in for a treat Richard, his music is expansive. An album recommendation would be Ocean Machine, with the song ‘The Death of Music’ being a particular favourite ~ it’s a grand musical journey, enjoy :)
Great song. Saw him olay a super intimate gig in a London church and he was really open about his mental health oddities and how it contributes to the variety of his different projects.
And I was just like you Richard, never listened to Devin despite or maybe because of the reverence he was held in. However, he's Mrs. Bumblefluff's favourite human and I'm a total convert. Would whole recommend going whole hog and immersing yourself. Start with Accelerated Evolution as a jumping off point and go from there, although you really cant go wrong with anything from Strapping Young Lad.
Ps. Opeth! You may find Devin steals your heart, but if you let them, Opeth will consume your soul
this is the song that led me to discover devins work, fun to play as well
Came here for the music, and got a Jungian lesson on feelings .
Judson nailing it !
🤘🤘
You guys are awesome.
Love me some Strapping Young Lad! Mr Townsend and Mr Hoglan are just top notch musicians through and through! I wore the Alien album out! One of my favorite metal albums of the early 2000’s!
Love this song, the video for it is straight up evil dead with a metal soundtrack. Saw them live a long time ago and I remember Devin being great at crowd work too. Good times :)
I had a beer with him after a show in Calgary once. Super down to earth guy. Honest and real. Just a real strapping young chad.
There is so much to like about this video! First, Is Judson's disdain for "improper inflection" I guess we could call it. I agree that is annoying but it is kinda funny to me seeing him express his level irritation over that trait.
Then, it's an awesome tune. DUH!
The first thing mentioned in the discussion after listening, is SO relatable! Richard, you nailed it! I tend to write off or dismiss suggestions for so many different things until I finally cave and give them a try. Instantly reminding myself, "you're an absolute goof troop!" Of course this was great and should have listened to this friend or family member long time ago.
Lastly, the icing on the cake for me, was Judson raising one finger and exclaiming "ya know, I was thinking the other day". LOL !! So many fun conversations are had that begin with that statement. This one is no different .
Coming up on 5 years and just wanna say thank y'all for being a part of this journey. Take care, gentlemen
Awesome. Thanks for the kind words and kickin it with us!
Yayyyy, y’all got to it!!! 🫶🏻🤘🏻
SYL's City album was a game changing record for me and my introduction to Devin over 25 years ago. All Hail the New Flesh, OMFG and Under the Waves are some of the most 'pissed off at the world' songs every recorded.
To me, they are the greatest extreme metal band ever. No band, that I've heard, has managed to be that brutal and extreme but still so fist-pumpingly anthemic, melodic and cathartic. It's a seamless juxtaposition that has never been done before, or since. Hevy Devy is a genius.
I “Love” this song 🤘🤘 I remember an interview with Devin where he talked about Gene’s drumming and specifically on this song. Devin said he wanted the double bass drumming slightly behind the guitars. Kinda like the guitars are dragging the bass drums. Gene also said that Devin is one of the best musicians he’s worked with.
Devin would initially play all instruments and program the drums on a drum machine. Gene said Devin’s drum tracks were and are best.
Yay! I found your channel through a reaction to DTP's "Deadhead"!
This song has been in my playlist since it came out like 15 years ago
Devin has a knack for casually changing a homie's life
This was a really fun episode.
As an oldtimer myself I can feel with Richard in some regards, as I can be the same. I mean, I love some of DT's later songs, like Juular or Kingdom, but I still haven't taken my time to listen to SYL or his other discography. But for me it's not about prestige, it's about hype. If something gets hyped I get really allergic to it. Because I get afarid of being disappointed. Which I sadly have gotten many times people have asked me to listen to new music in the past.
My prayers are answered! Awesome song
Yes! Strapping Young Lad (and Devy overall) is one of my all time faves. This will be a treat!
Great rendition of everybody hurts, btw. Somehow I got it from few of the first notes.
Such a classic evergreen slammer!
Strapping is so good. Amazing. City is a perfect album. People sleep on The New Black, but it has amazing songs!
I'll never forget seeing Strapping Young Lad in 2006. Devin came out and said "Strait out of Hell, Vancouver Canada!!!!" I laughed so hard and fell in love at the same time
Didn't dig the song but liked the discussion afterwards quite a bit. Interesting concept Judson about feeling vs emotion. Never thought about it that way. And Richard I feel you on recommendations and publications/big press on bands. I have that same dumb thing going. If the band is getting hyped I just think they're popular and "I'm too cool for them". Then years later I listen to it and just go damnnnn im an idiot, this is great
I came to SYL very late despite my bestie trying countless times to get me into them. When he passed, it suddenly clicked and getting to see Devin play Love? in 2023 was amazing. As for Opeth, I loved their Blackwater Park era when it came out but kinda fell out of love with them after Martin Lopez left. Martin's current band Soen are everything to me so if you ever do one of their tracks, I'd be interested to see what you make of them.
Strapping Young Lad is an amazing band to delve into. There's not a ton of albums, but they're all great. It's worth pointing out for a while Devin was putting out SYL albums and solo albums at the same time. SYL was always the more angry, aggressive form of expression, whereas his solo work was (and still is) more introspective.
I'm not sure if you guys know, but Devin Townsend recorded an album with Steve Vai when he was only 20 years old. I'm just mention it to point out how versatile he is as a musician.
some aspects of this song were inspired by the song by the band YES, called City of love. if you go listen to that one, you'll recognize the chorus right away!
SYL is one of my all time favourite bands.
The most important thing to remember is to never... I mean NEVER take Devin seriously. He's like the Mel Brooks of heavy metal
If you want one song that really shows the true range of Devin Townsend’s musical creativity, I would suggest Singularity off of the Empath album. It’s quite long, over 20 minutes, but I don’t think there’s a better song that shows what he’s capable of doing as a composer.
Not everything Dev has done is heavy, he's done just about every kind of music (even a space country album!)
My suggestion for the mellower stuff would be the album Ki. My favourite from that album is Coast, but every song on the album is great.
Heavy Devy
A quote from a certain movie:
- Sometimes I wonder if love is even possible in life? Is that even a thing?
- Love?
- Yeah, love. Is that even possible?
- Well, on TV they often show love, when some people love each other or talk.
- Yeah. I also think that it is impossible in life.
✨❤✨
Oh yes, something Judson might find interesting - Devin townsend also has musical synaesthesia, and very strongly engages with that when composing (based on half-remembered interviews).
He self-effacingly says that he mostly writes his lyrics by free-association and what fits into the music but that could be a justification for digging into it more, rather than writing it off as meaningless...!
A really interesting - though not metal - project is his space country duo "Casualties of Cool". It sounds kinda like johnny cash dropped acid and recorded an album on the moon, maybe? It's great though. Give it a try!
I would really enjoy seeing a reaction to detox - possibly the coronavirus "live" version with him older - because it's one of rare songs that is unbelievably aggressive and angry while simultaneously being miserable and despairing beyond belief. His screamed line post the 3min breakdown feels genuine in a way that few other artists manage.
For other things of course "almost again" is a good curveball, being a bit outside the normal vibe for SYL, and then ALL HAIL THE NEW FLESH is just an absolute banger.
SYL was like that for me too.
For some reason I got it in my head I didn’t like them without even hearing it.
Finally got into them about 10 years ago and I love them now.
I’ve got a few bands like that.
Mastodon and Opeth are others.
Saw Devin on his City tour with Testament. Such a heavy as balls show. Lol Devin was wearing leather pants and nothing else. Screaming his balls off. I got to buy Gene Hoglan a beer. Was an amazing night. Wish Devin and Gene would work on something again.
Opeth's an amazing band, I'm haven't listened in a long time , but their Live performances are beastly to watch!
awesome vid btw!
✌❤🤘
Also, SYL IS BEAST
Love how you pronounce it as a question. :D
Have you guys done any fleshgod yet?? Would love to see his reaction to epilogue
I think two things that are important to mention are that during the recording of this album, Dev cold turkey'd his (at the time) perscribed bipolar meds. The second part is that this album and what would be his departure from the band was in part a response to having a child. Strapping was a face that he wore on stage that worked as far as money is concerned, but not the true self he wanted people to perceive.
The last track on Devin's album Lightwork (2022) is called Children of God. Good album.
Need to get down on some early Between the Buried and Me. So much Jazz influence and it’s super interesting. More of Myself to Kill is my favorite song (self titled version) and Selkies: endless obsession from the Alaska album is great.
This band is a blindspot for me, too, i just never tried them, though id heard of them
Still one of the coolest band names ever!
When I was young I thought it was stupid, but I was wrong 😂
It’s great.
Looks like I have some research to do as well. Never really bothered to explore the world of Devin Townsend.
Day 34 of requesting Diablo Swing Orchestra.
Devin! Yes. Aww yi boys. Kingdom. Kingdom. Kingdom.
This album is about his confliction towards fatherhood
This song is incredible. Fingers crossed one last SYL album will happen.
Love me some Devy, for a lot of the reasons Judson says he likes him too. His personal growth is very interesting when you consider his use of music as an externalisation. Comparing stuff from City to his more recent albums is very interesting.
Some suggestions for him...
SYL: AAA, Underneath the Waves, Skeksis, Almost Again.
Devy: Stormbending, Deadhead, Supercrush!, Sumeria
Saw Fleshgod Apocalypse last sunday, in Tivoli, Utrecht, Netherlands, ..... these kind of bands make up the fact I never got to see Strapping.
Now that you are on this journey, it's time for some Trivium specifically the song Shogun.
Love? is definitely a good one to start with. I think what can be fun is contrasting his two very different, yet very similar styles of music against eachother. Detox off of SYL's City, and Bastard off of Devin's Ocean Machine are about the same night according to Devin
it helps that they're also two of each bands greatest songs
I was mad at Judson for months, then I forgave him. Don't ask me why.
Hey Richard, there's a saying in Serbian that roughly translates to: "When you admit your wrongs, half of those are forgiven" So, don't be too hard on yourself, we all have that, cognitive dissonance is a biAtch. 😅
Nice!
I have the same thing, i missed out on a lot of good music because people i know to be fickle would try push it on me. I also dodged some bullets though. 😅
Gene Hoglan is a fucking beast of a drummer! I mean, who else could drum for Devin and Dethklok!
Оооо!!
I vote for kingdom or Genesis for a future review please everybody who agrees like this thank you
Obscure Sphinx - Scarcity Hunter

WHOOPSE
Do “Juular”?
Dethklok !!!!!!!
This is a great song from a great band. I wish SYL would get back together but the vocalist died.
Devin's still very much alive.
Please do Skesis off this album for a proper SYL experience.
I prefer Devin's more poop monster related material.
edit: oh if youre not that familiar with hevy devy and you like STY, then listen to ziltoid and ziltoid 2. basically invader zim done SYL style feature poop monsters and evil space queens. FUN!
Canadian band soon to be taken by president Trump. Are Canadians proud of this?
We love President Trump and we want to be a part of USA.
Everybody hurts?
Nvm you said it lol
Yes it's Automatic for the people
You should listen to the song "oh my fucking god" next. =))))
It's been a while since watching any of your videos, I was busy settling in Australia. Funnily enough you mentioned what I noticed after a couple of days here, they speak like this ???????
Now I've? picked up the?ir way?? of s?p?eaking send help please??
Any deathcore fan who think deathcore is the heaviest shit should listen to SYL :D But my god, the lyrics are always so shit lol. "Love is a way of feeling" ? Yeah ok bro haha
the following "so what's all the fuss about" is important for the context of the lyrics you posted, as well as the whole song imo
Too bad that's the short version...
Feelings are gay
Fun fact: their drummer, Gene Hoglan, plays in Dethklok! Y’all should check out Dethklok’s music. Perfect mix of heavy and melodic
You mean Death.
@@HenritheHorsealso Dethklok.
@@LudovicoEnjoyer I know, I was just half joking, since Death is much better.
@@HenritheHorsethey’re both great in different ways
@LudovicoEnjoyer They are.
When you'll take nintendocore on workshop please consider Anamanaguchi - Airbrushed :>
