  • Completing another successful year of scheduled runs to the far Southwest, Nunney Castle bows out with two tours in one week: The Cathedrals Express from Westbury to Kingswear on Tuesday 16th September and the Torbay Express on its final run of the season from Bristol to Kingswear on Sunday 21st. The easterly haze is still well established as 5029 hauls the Cathedrals Express, passing the crane rig at Dawlish, placed ready for major work to raise the vulnerable lower path on the seawall and ultimately replacing the temporary container barrage which has held so well since the February storm. Further along the coast we look down from the top of The Ness, high above Shaldon as in the clearer weather of Sunday, Nunney hauls the Torbay Express. Returning that evening my plans are foiled and I have to settle for a last minute grab shot on the Teign next to the main road. Finally, back to Tuesday where we see The Cathedrals Express depart Exeter St David's Station in hazy evening sunshine, picking up speed as it heads towards Cowley Bridge and away up through the Exe valley homeward bound for Westbury.

Hi Andrei and thank you for your valuable comments. I don't think that I have seen other postings from this location, probably because of the pylons which are rather intrusive. Alan

Another great video. That line past Dawlish and Teignmouth is so iconic, especially with steam-hauled trains travelling along it.

Hello Keith and thank you for your kind comment. Being such an iconic stretch of line, the challenge is to find "new" locations to film from! Best regards, Alan

Once upon an empty pair of shed-yard sidings, Nunney Castle was resting alongside LMS Jubilee Tender Engine Galatea. Galatea was due to take out The Red Rose Express in an hour. She was happy about getting a long main line run, yet she was fed up with having her name and number swapped for long gone sisters of hers. She told her Driver and Fireman so.
"Can I please run with my own name and number?" begged Galatea. "Everyone will mistake me for Alberta otherwise." Her Driver and Fireman looked at her in surprise.
"Everyone loves seeing you in disguise of a lost sister engine," observed her Driver. At that moment, GWR steamy Olton Hall in newly re-applied Brunswick Green approached on the 'reception' track.
"I'm glad I don't have to be red Hogwarts Castle any more," Olton Hall tooted. "I say Galatea should carry her own name and number, from now on. Haven't you heard of putting an engine's feelings before your own?" Nunney Castle tooted in agreement. Galatea knew a repaint wasn't feasible at this time, but she did get her own nameplates and number back. Galatea hooted for joy, letting off steam with relief. Red Rose time came. The LMS steamy chuffed happily away to couple up to her coaches. For once, she didn't have to swap identity and it made her day. Nunney Castle and Olton Hall watched their friend puff away with 12 coaches in tow. Nunney Castle turned her attention back to her GWR cousin.
"How did you manage to get repainted?" asked Nunney curiously.
"Let's just say I had a bit of help from someone who loves us very much," came the reply.
Behind the fence, giving both steamies a wink, stood Alan Steamclips. He also had a hand in helping Galatea get her own name and numberplates back. In any case, I'll finish the story here. Alan Steamclips is a friend to every steam engine he meets, make no mistake.😂🙃
