    Good work on this series. I started my fingerpicking journey learning from your "windy and warm" video, and a few months later and a lot of practise, i got good with the thumb and getting consistent with the fingers for the melody and harmony in different songs like windy and warm, copper kettle, freigh train and even my own songs im trying to arrange on this style. I love this new series because even if im more and more confortable with this style, and a tiny bit further than the beginner, (just a tiny really) it is so worth it to see your new videos because you give some really cool insides like the pick position and muscle strength, and that is a thing that can be easily overlooked. So thanks a lot for this videos Tim. Cheers and beers from Portugal!

    Hey Tim, thank you for your work! I finally learned the third bridge of Windy and Warm thanks to your video. I now have a question regarding the picking hand: how do you choose which finger is going to pluck each string? Do you "assign" a finger to each string (i.e. thumb - E, A, D strings, index - G string, middle finger - B string, ring finger high E string) and always stick to that? Up until now I have been playing without worrying too much about this, I now wonder if I should pay attention to it though.

      Hi Giuseppe! What you are describing is more a “classical etude” approach to playing, and that doesn’t seem to work so well with fingerstyle. As a general rule Tommy (and Chet, and lots of others) tend to prefer the index and middle fingers for 90% of the work, only adding in the ring finger when there is no other option. That means a lot of jumping around between strings! I used to incorporate the ring finger a lot more into my playing, but switched over to this method a while ago… And it does seem to make a lot of things easier!

      @@TimVanRoy Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! That is also what I have been doing: using mostly the index and middle fingers. It's what felt most natural to me, but I wondered if I should take advantage of the ring finger a little more. Apparently not!

    I’m trying too use a thumb pick. Not just for bass strings but for full strumming which means holding thump pick with finger. Otherwise up strumming the pick flys off.

    Great video! Very helpful! Something I'm really struggling with, though, is that when I use a thumbpick, the volume of the bass strings overpowers the melody played with my fingers. How can I increase the volume of the top three strings played with the fingers? Trying to pluck harder with those fingers hasn't made much of a difference. Note that my fingernails are short, so I'm picking with only the flesh of my fingers. I don't know if growing my nails and picking more with my nails will help much.

      @TimVanRoy  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Peter! In my experience you should look at it the other way around: don't try to get to top strings louder, but do everything in your power to keep the volume of the bass strings down. It's as simple as looking at the mass of the string: you'll never be able to get the high E string as loud as the low E string (let alone louder) because that low E string is roughly 5 times the mass of the high E string. Picking as light as possible on the wound strings is the first step to developing your picking technique! Good luck!

      @@TimVanRoy Hi Tim!
      I’m thrilled that you replied, and so fast, too! I definitely see the logic in your advice, and I’ll do my best to lighten my picking with the thumbpick. I’m currently using a Fred Kelly Slick Pick, and I think I’ll also try a Fred Kelly Speed Pick to see if its narrow blade might also reduce the volume.
      I love your videos, and I really appreciate your help!
