    You might have seen our recent video on the Pakistani economy. In the video, we discussed the various reasons that for the crisis in Pakistani economy. India, on the other hand, is doing much despite the stresses of Covid. But you might be surprised to know that there was a time when Pakistan had a better economy than India, with Pakistan’s GDP per capita significantly higher than India in the early 1980s. Today, however, India has far outpaced Pakistan’s growth. How has that happened? As we’ll see in this video, it’s a fascinating assortment of reasons, all of which we have discussed in detail.

    Another reason for their economic boom in the 60's was Bangladesh or the erstwhile East Pakistan. They took our wealth and fed their people. East Bengal or East Pakistan contributed to 62% of the government revenue of Pakistan and got roughly 25% in return. After 1971, there was no 'East Pakistan' to exploit.

    U did great research but missed a point that Manmohan Singh did not liberalise the economy on his own will. India was forced to open its economy in order to take help from IMF in BOP crisis of 1991.
    That was the sole reason for economy to open up to the world. India was never ready for that because britishers came as traders and ruled over us, which made Indian government fearful of foreign companies.

    I am your regular viewer from Pakistan and the reasons that Pakistan is lagging behind in most of economical indicators are 1. Pakistan involving itself in the Afghan wars in the 70s , 80s and 2000s ( War on terror) . 2. No expansion of the tax network 3. Subsidies given to the elite and rich e.g Sugar and Real Estate sectors. There is no incentive for the investor to set up a factory that can export and it is easier for them to invest in a plot of land and earn more which is not benefitting anyone and doesn't increase productivity and employment. 4. No FDI because of the wars that Pakistan fought on the western front and that created a security issue which we are still facing today. There are many more reasons aswell for example not spending on education and agticulture sectors. Pakistan has the lowest literacy rate in all of south aisa.

And even in modi-nawaz sheriff times too... but pakistan military derailed the peace talks with kargil war and pathankot-uri attacks... now india-pakistan relations is back to square one .. and india have kindf learned to avoid /ignore pakistan too in recent times... may be once a moderate democratic stable govt with less military intervention in pakistan happens.. india -pakistan relationship will improve and solutions for the issues could be findout too

    So these are clear lessons for us indians also if we don't want to repeat same mistakes either our's Or pakistan's
    1) Socialism doesn't work. Countless examples and our own experience suggests same so we should continue and improve our current path of capitalist economic reforms and infrastructure building
    2) We should strengthen our institutions so as to resist any authoritarian and religious extremism that would destroy the peace and prosperity of country
    3) we must focus on human development because even a country with 5 million people who are well educated, free spirited, entrepreneurial and innovative can do better than a country of 500 million with less human development

    • @rutvikrs

      I take issue with 2 & 3:
      1. The idea of Pakistan's extremist path is not applicable to India. Pakistan's political and military elite deliberately chose the anti economic path as they had realised by the 70's and even more so by the 90's (failure of Stan bloc) they don't want the economic path because their society and country would be consumed under it.
      2. Human development is a second order effect of economic progress. A country that overproduces it's elite will be ruled from the outside.

      When industry were infant in late 1800 even America was protecting its infant industry. Today opening up works because
      1. Industry of west comes to east for cheap labour.
      2. Consumers get better products at lesser price.
      But before independence our industry was crushed by uk as they sold cheap saree bangle agarbatti etc to us and not let us develop heavy industry. Jl nehru was clear foundation needs to be strong so instead of Consumer goods we sacrificed to produce heavy industry. 1990s this power steel engineering industry was used to make industrial machine which produced Consumer goods. So socialism was not an ideology , it was a curtain under ussr to grow at home. U dnt let your infant roam around. Once same infant grows up you dnt stop or protect.

      @rutvikrs Год назад +2

      @@chethanshajan9047 religious extremism is not unique but the identitarian politics causes it to be. Unlike conservatives in other countries, Pakistani elite does not have a history, foundation myth, theological mandate or continuing tradition. This causes them to essentially treat Pakistan as a temporary state of being. To some they are waiting for capture and conversion of the entire subcontinent, to most people it is the subsumation into the global ummah under the Caliphate.
      This causes their identity crisis on who they really are. When a Pakistani salutes to their flag, they are honouring Islam which is unlike any other nation. Their political elites realise this either through ideology(Liaqat Ali, Zia ul Haq, Yahya Khan) or experience (liberals like Bhutto family, Gilani, Shaukat Ali and even Imran Khan who are liberals outside and conservatives inside the country).
      Playing the welfare nation state game will cause them harm because they can never be energy surplus or keep a market economy to compete with either Asia or the Middle East. They even tried the Stan grouping which failed purely due to lack of cultural coherence.

    • @chethanshajan9047
      @chethanshajan9047 Год назад

      @@rutvikrs The pakistani elite isn't the entire pakistani nation and we hv often seen that radical religious ideologies themselves (Islamic fundamentalism in this case) provides their own foundational myths and cooked up historical narratives. It's only a matter of how much radicalism the politician peddling it requires to mobilise the masses in his support and any society given the optimum conditions can be brought to this state.
      Pakistan definitely has the potential and population to maintain a healthy market economy if it manages to bring major structural changes and evicts the military from its political institutions. The stan grouping failed because of the war in Afghanistan, Pakistan's affinity to the taliban, Russian and Chinese interests in Central Asia. If cultural coherence was the determinant then Pakistan is probably the only country other than Turkey in the middle East that can claim substantial turkic lineage to central Asia.
